Special Riding Clinic
We have a special Alexander Technique week from
14th - 20th May at in Portugal which we thought you may be
interested in.
Location
The clinic takes place at Herdade da Sanguinheira. A restored typical
Alentejo Monte (Farm) in the heart of Portugal about a hundred miles
north east of Lisbon in the wide-open spaces of the Alentejo region. The
Alto Alentejo has a varied landscape with cork trees, mimosas,
eucalyptus, olive and pine trees, rounded hills and rugged valleys with
a rich flora and fauna. Bird watching, especially in spring, autumn and
the mild wintertime when the storks come to their winter resorts, is
particularly special. But, people really love to come to Sanguinheira
for the beautiful Lusitanos and the opportunity to ride these wonderful
horses on the trail or in the arena.
Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a method that works to change habits in our
everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving
ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The
technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a
particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It
is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of
the mind and body. The Alexander Technique is a method which helps a
person discover new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary
tension. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking,
lifting, and other daily activities. The Alexander Technique principles
can be used to improve riding skills by concentrating on posture, muscle
tone and sensitivity, breathing, balance, sense of feel, the independent
seat, horse and rider communication, and poise when performing.
The Alexander Technique is particularly well suited to riders as the
horse acts as a monitor for the improved use of the human body, and
responds positively as the rider becomes more balanced, sensitive and
confident. By improving their position riders can then improve the
performance of their horse. This makes life easier for both you and your
horse, and riding will be more enjoyable.

Your instructor for the week is
Adrienne Aretz. She has been teaching the technique since 1996.
