The Secrets of Sardinia - Sardinia is a stunning un-spoilt island, at just a short distance from the Southern tip of Corsica, there is 13kms of sea that separate the two. Paths that wind there way through myrtle, rosemary rock rose and sea lavender to some wonderful relaxing sandy bays. The chalk and limestone coastline give a clear aqua marine, beautiful pale blue color that and there are numerous caves, grottos, stalactites and underground lakes. You will find a land of farms and meadows bright with wild flowers. Sardinia is a land of shepherds and traditional villages. The island is dotted with neuralgic villages that belonged to the first settlers, they went to great length to construct small huts, shelters called ‘nuraghi’ that were hewn from the limestone rock with juniper branches for roofs. There is some wonderful cooking, unlimited fresh fish, roasted meats, warm grilled cheeses and ricotta, not to mention all the fresh pasta, there are really plenty of surprises. The wildlife is particularly rich on the coast in the North there is a band of about 30 dolphins, in the interior you can find wild horses, mouflons, porcupines and many birds such as golden eagles and falcons.

Self-guided walking

The itinerary winds through Aleppo and maritime pine forests to reach jagged sea cliffs and rocky creeks with spectacular views at each turn. A wonderful vegetation of myrthe, rosemary, rock rose and sea lavender border the sandy beaches, many of which can only be reached by sea or on foot. The white chalk rocks and limestone cliffs give the water an enticing, crystalline pale blue colour. In the island's interior you will find a traditional land of shepherds and agriculture, rolling hills and meadows bright with wild flowers, horses, mouflon, porcupines and many birds, such as golden eagles and falcons.
 

Day 1 : Nuoro to Oliena
Starting point at ARST bus station in Nuoro, transfer by bus to the village of Oliena. Check into your hotel situated at the foot of the Supramonte massif.

Day 2 : The Punta Sos Nidos or the Monte Corrasi
The white soaring massif of the Supramonte stretches east towards the gulf of Orosei and is dominated by three principal summits, the Monté Corrasi (1463m), the Punta Ortu Caminnu (1331m) and the Punta Sos Nidos (1348m). From your hotel we propose two good walking options, one of which is the Monte Corrasi, the highest summit of the Supramonte massif. From the mountains high ridges you can enjoy some magnificent, far stretching, airy views across high belvederes, karstic plateaus and white cliffs. This vast area is an isolated land of shepherds, It is slashed with deep gorges and inaccessible peaks that are home to a rich fauna of eagles, mouflon, foxes, wild cats, and boar.
Night and evening meal in hotel Monte Maccione 4h00-6h00 effective walking, +400m to 700m altitude , -400m to 700m, 10km to15km (depending on the option you choose.)
Day 3: Monte Maccione to Olièna
A walk on the North side of the Supramonte massif along a trail that offers fabulous views of the Cedrino valley and the Mont Otobène. Your trail winds through oak and pine woods to lead you to the village of Olièna. This small authentic village is huddled beneath the dominant Supramonté mountains, the surrounding hillsides are planted with the vines that give the famous Sardinian wine the ‘Canonaux’. The village is a maze of small winding streets, with traditional old family homes, the older ladies can often be seen wearing the traditional Sardinian costume. Olièna is also known for its crafts and gastronomy. Having visited the village a trail up through the woods leads back to the hotel.

Day 4: Tiscali and the valley of Lanaittu
An early morning transfer into the valley of Lanaittu. We stop en route at an enchanting area where the natural spring of Su Gologone goes into the Olièna river, the water is deliciously fresh. This water comes up from the Su Gologone grotto and is the biggest spring in Sardinia, providing an average of 300 litters of water per second. We continue the transfer in the valley to your starting point. Walking up through the cliffs you will eventually arrive at the village of Monte Tiscali hidden deep in the mountain floor. There is an astonishing wealth of archaeological treasures in Sardinia, it’s early history is veiled in mystery. It is dotted with little nuraghic villages that belonged to the first settlers. Traces of an ancient era that went to great length to construct small huts, shelters called ‘nuraghi’ hewn from the limestone rock with juniper branches for roofs, they are thought to date from between 1500 and 500 BC. The underground village of Tiscali is perhaps the most well known. Passing through the vast gorge of Scala de Surtana that is chiselled through the chalk cliffs you join the shepherds valley of Flumineddu and take a good track onto Dorgali.

Day 5: Dorgali to Cala Gonone
The itinerary continues to loose altitude, dropping down towards sea level. All the way there are magnificent views as you approach the coastline and the busy little coastal village of Cala Gonone. The surrounding mountains of this bay stretch to the foot of Mont Codula Mana, an inactive volcano that is surrounded by a belt of heavily wooded limestone mountains. The port of Gonone is an ideal departure point for a whole host of boat excursions that can take you to inaccessible coves and grottos. There is time in the afternoon to take advantage of the coastline

Day 6: Caletta Fuili to Cala Luna

Cala Luna, or Moon beach is completely cut off, accessible only by foot or boat, it is one of the prettiest coves in the Gulf of Orosei. You will discover an inspiring decor of soaring white chalk cliffs that tower above the sea, a small sandy cove and a little jetty for the boats. In the cliffs that border the beach there are six immense grottos, a forest of laurels divides the beach from a neighboring lake. The depart for this walk is at Cala de Fuili which is undoubtedly the most scenic ways of reaching Cala Luna cove. The trail runs alongside the coastline to the Grotta del Bue Marino, winding its way through a fragrant vegetation of juniper, thyme and Mediterranean plants, it’s a real pleasure to amble along enjoying the views of the gulf below. You can return to Cala Ganone by the same trail, or If you wish you can take the boat back.

Day 7: Cala Gonone to Nuoro
Return by bus at 10h00 to Nuoro. Your holiday comes to an end at 11h00 at the ARST bus station in Nuoro, or an alternative end point can be organized depending on what suits you best. This should be determined when you book up your holiday with us.

Your transfers during the holiday:

Day 1 : The transfer from Nuoro ferry terminal to your hotel in Oliena is by private bus at a pre-determined time.
Day 4 : At 08h00, transfer by private vehicle to the walk's starting point.
Day 7 : Return to Nuoro by ARST bus. Tickets given to you by the hotel. Remeber to pick them up the day before. To return to Olbia, Cagliari, Alghero, please consult us.
