TYPES OF RAFTS
 |
OARBOATS - These are inflatable rafts (approx. 17 - 18
feet in length) with a guide that maneuvers it with a set of oars secured to a frame in
the middle of the raft. This is considered to be a more stable craft than a paddleboat. |
 |
PADDLEBOATS - These are inflatable rafts (approx. 15 -
16 feet in length) manned by people and their paddles. The guide gives instruction and
navigates from the back of the boat. |
 |
J - RIG RAFTS - These inflatable rafts (23 feet in
length) are motorized and move faster down river. The guide operates the motor from the
rear of the craft. They are much larger than the other rafts and are considered to be the
most stable. These rafts are used on the Cataract 3 day and 4 day trips only. |
 |
INFLATABLE KAYAKS - These small inflatable rafts are
manned by 1 or 2 people with their double ended paddles. There is no guide in these
crafts. They are available for rent on the Green River, other moderate rated rivers and
are available in Cataract and Westwater during low water seasons (through the smaller
rapids only.) |
WATER LEVELS
Depending on snowpack and time of year, river water levels can vary from high to medium
to low. In high water, we generally use bigger, more stable rafts to ride faster
current, climb over larger waves and crash through more powerful holes. In low flows,
on the other hand, we use our frisky smaller rafts for encountering smaller waves, and
with tight teamwork and exact timing, maneuver down steep, narrow chutes and over abrupt
drops. Medium water, naturally, is somewhere in between. High water
generally occurs during spring runoff in May and June, while lower flows are normally
found July though September. Exceptions to this pattern are rivers controlled by dams,
winter weather conditions, and summer rainfalls. The different flows have their appeal,
and we work to offer you watercraft that will make the most of each water level.
"For me it was a tremendous adventure. I consider it the best remedy against
stress, and even more, it is a natural one. Afterwards it was very difficult for me to
leave the river. I think if this experience had lasted some more time, I would have
reached the point of no return." Voste Albert, Belgium
