Day 1 Walking Distance 2 miles (3.2 km)
Our tour begins in the World Heritage City of Bath. This afternoon we will be taken on a two-hour guided walking tour of the city. In addition to its history as a Roman City it is also worth touring the Cathedral, admiring the architecture and listening to the Jane Austen stories of social life in eighteenth century Bath. We will have our evening meal in one of Bath?s most prestigious restaurants.
Day 2 Walking Distance 6 miles (9.7 km)
Shortly after setting off from Bath we will stop to walk at the pretty Cotswold village of Castle Combe. We begin on the edge of the village and then travel through the heart of what is one of England's prettiest villages with old streets of Bath stone cottages and a river flowing though the main street. We then climb steadily along the banks of By Brook to open countryside and a riverside lunch break.
Afterwards we will make a slight detour on our journey to the heart of the Cotswolds to visit the Abbey Gardens in Malmesbury.
Day 3 Walking Distance 8 miles approx (12.9 km)
The Cotswolds in Gloucestershire are our next destination: idyllic English villages nestling in unspoilt English scenery, an unforgettable part of the country. Belinda our expert guide will keep you enchanted with natural history and folklore. Return to the hilltop village of Amberley for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4 Walking Distance 8 miles (12.9 km)
Our destination today is the Mendip Hills of South Somerset. We start at the 'Rock of Ages' (made famous in the hymn) at Burrington Combe near Cheddar Gorge. We then walk steadily up onto the top of the Mendip Hills. Again, Belinda will be your guide today with stories from Mendip history and information on all the local geology, flora and fauna.
We will be staying tonight at Battleborough Grange at Brent Knoll, Somerset.
Day 5 Walking Distance 9 miles (14.5 km)
A typical Quantock walk of open heath, moorland and deep combes (valleys), with views out across Bridgwater Bay to Wales and the coast of Somerset. Beginning at Holford and walking through some beautiful wood lands, we then take a couple of long climbs with fine views to reward us at the top. We will stop for a pub lunch at the Carew Arms in the village of Crowcombe. If the timing is right, we will round off this lovely walk with a steam railway journey from Carhampton to Dunster.
Our next three nights are spent in the beautiful village of Dunster overlooking the ancient Yarn Market.
Day 6 Walking Distance 8 miles (12.9 km)
This is my favourite walk in the whole of southern England! Coast, woodland, streams, chocolate-box villages, moor and heathland. We begin at the 'Lorna Doone' village of Porlock and continue out to a pebble beach at Bossington. The roads through this village wind between ancient thatched cottages and lead us on to the next village of Allerford.
We pass through the National Trust hamlet of Selworthy and ultimately climb up through the woods to the viewpoint at Selworthy Beacon. We eventually make our way down to the Southwest Coast Path at Hurlstone Point.
Day 7 Walking Distance 8 miles (12.9 km)
We will set off today for Cornwall. En route we stop at the Exmoor Village of Withypool. The walk along the River Barle is outstanding and unforgettable.
We follow the river for most of the walk and cross the old bridge at Tarr Steps and then walk back via the rolling Exmoor hills.
We then travel off to the Devon / Cornwall border where we spend the next three nights at Welcombe Farm.
Day 8 Walking Distance 7 miles approx (11.3 km)
Today we will enjoy a variety of local historical places as we leave the village, West Mill being one of only three old mills left in this area. Welcombe farm is located in 500 acres of conservation land. There are rare species of flora and fauna not seen very much elsewhere. We can enjoy fantastic coastal views and woodland throughout the walk.
When we reach Morwenstow, a rather stunning village, we have Robert Stephen Hawker Country to explore - the magnificent church dating back to 16th century etc; Rev Hawker being a famous vicar and poet of 1800s. It's a stunning village with tea rooms and traditional thatched pub reputed to be haunted, formerly the village school many years ago. The walk back takes us via woodland swamped with some of the more unusual varieties of orchids and wild flowers. Hopefully we will get to see an abundance of rare butterflies and dragonflies.
Day 9 Clovelly is something a little different, it's a beautiful little 13th century fishing village, we walk in to it via the main estate grounds which are a stunning setting (rather like something from Jane Austen) with views of woodlands, estate grounds on one side and stunning coastal views immediately on the left. When we arrive at the village it's a walk down the cobbled stoned streets into the heart of the village which is another chocolate-box setting: fishing cottages and a little community set against the backdrop of the coast and harbour. We then go into a traditional fisherman's hut, a couple of lovely little churches and chapels and then down towards the picturesque harbour. The walk back is through the estate grounds and woodlands, lots of local wildlife as we go through a pheasant reserve.
Day 10 Walking Distance 5 miles (8 km)
This is a lovely walk to start the day. Wild and windswept Dartmoor in all its splendour! We begin walking through the village of Belstone and then on through country lanes on to the open moorland. We travel high above the Okement Valley and then around via several of the lower Tors (hills) before turning directly back on an easy low track back to Belstone. This afternoon we will stop at Glastonbury: home of Avalon and the famous legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. We then travel on to Wells for our last night.
Day 11 Walking Distance 1 mile (1.6 km)
Today we will be joined again by Belinda who will be our guide for the morning tour of Wells: England's smallest cathedral city. We will then travel back to Bath where you can choose to be dropped at either the hotel or the Railway Station.
