12 Days Program :
Arequipa/ Colca Valley, Yanque, Coporaque, Madrigal, Pinchollo, Geyser, Yanque/Arequipa/Region Competition of Paso Peruano
Wednesday 15th August - Day 1 : We’ll pick you up at the international Airport of Arequipa and drive you to the hacienda San Juan at La Joya (about 40 minutes). Lunch not included but this dinner is included. Presentation of Peruvian Paso Horse, presentation of training and the famous gait, then you’ll deserve a rest in the Hacienda.
Thursday 16th August - Day 2 : Pick up to go to Arequipa, visit Santa Catalina’s Convent, then lunch and discover the White City in a pedestrian city tour. Dinner not included. Night in a Hotel in Arequipa downtown.
Friday 17th August - Day 3 : You will leave your hotel in Arequipa at 8:00 a.m. with a private transportation in direction of the Colca Valley. You will enter the “Salinas y Aguada Blanca” reserve (south American camels as Alpaca, Llama and Vicuñas). See the volcanoes belvedere at the highest point of the area at 4900 meters above the sea level, and you will descend until the valley (3500 meters), where a delicious lunch will be served in Tradicion Colca Hotel. In the afternoon, you will visit our stable, to meet our Peruvian “paso” horses and our specialized “chalanes”. Afterwards you will know the Yanque Village, where you could admire the Church, constructed by the Spanish in the XVIIth Century, and visit the museum of Yanque, which shows the culture of Colca Valley and the ancient civilizations who dwelt there. Return to the hotel to enjoy massages. The Sauna and Jacuzzi will be available from 18h00 to 21h00. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel Tradicion Colca. This night, a small performance of the typical dance, called “Wittiti” will be provided by the children of the village at 19h00 in our restaurant.
Saturday 18th August - Day 4 : Breakfast at the hotel and depart for your first horseback ride : Coporaque Village and the archaeological site of Uyo-Uyo (6-hours ride – snack box on the way). You will leave our stable and you will cross the “Plaza de armas” of Yanque Village. You will then cross the stone bridge over the Colca River, where you can see the “Collagua” (Pre-Inca Culture) way to store corn: in holes carved in the mountain, so high that the only way to reach them, is using a rope. You will climb the path to the lost City of Uyo-Uyo. Finally you find the Archaeological site of Uyo-Uyo, the ancient capital city of the “Collagua” culture, with old houses, ancient irrigation ducts and a lot of other evidences which prove the coexistence between the “Collaguas” and the Incas. From there you will reach the way to Coporaque Village, passing through the “amphitheater”, amazing Pre-Inca terraces carved in the mountain in circular form. Finally arriving at Coporaque Village, you will see at the “plaza de armas”, besides of the singular church, a fountain dedicated to the Inca (Evidence of the Inca conquer). You will keep on riding until the “Collagua” cemetery, made with stones at the bottom of the mountain, full of skulls and bones of the “Collagua” culture. Return to the Tradicion Colca Hotel to enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, you will go in a private transportation to the hot springs bath of Chivay Village. Return to the hotel to enjoy massages. The Sauna and Jacuzzi will be available from 18h00 to 21h00. Dinner and overnight stay at the Tradicion Colca Hotel.
Sunday 19th August - Day 5 : Beginning of the progressive ride (check “what I need to bring” on last page) : 8h00 - Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. At 9h00 - depart with the horses (6-hours ride) to the right side of Colca Valley to explore the tranquility and beauty of the landscape. You will also enjoy the Pre-Inca Terraces, wonderful crops carved in the mountains. You will cross the Villages of Ichupampa, Lari and Madrigal, where the group will set up the camp, dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
Monday 20th August - Day 6 : Enjoy breakfast at the camp, you will climb the “Chimpa” Mountain, to reach “Chimpa’s” fortress, located at the top (3 hours trek + 4 hours ride). During this part you are going to experience some great attractions such as a model carved in the rock, the thrones of the emperor and an amazing panorama of the Valley. From Chimpa Fortress you can enjoy a unique view of the canyon. Chimpa fortress was a strategical military facility, made with stones by the “Collagua” culture .
Return to the camp and ride for 4 hours until Pinchollo village. You will cross the Colca River again, passing through another beautiful bridge. On the way you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of Colca Valley, full of Pre-Inca Terraces, mountains, and animal life: alpacas, llamas, cows, bulls, and sheeps, accompanied by a very typical people, still wearing their traditional clothes. You can also see these Collagua people working in their fields. Dinner and overnight stay in Pinchollo village, in basic accommodations.
Tuesday 21th August - Day 7 : Breakfast in Pinchollo and later depart to a 7-hour ride in the day, to the Geyser of Pinchollo. On the way you will pass through amazing landscapes composed by high and snowed volcanoes, waterfalls and huge mountains, following the river to finally reach the geyser “Hatun Infiernillo” (4800 meters above the sea level), available 24 hours per day the entire year. You will enjoy the lunch on the way and you will enjoy the lunch on the way and will keep the ride until reach a belvedere called “Cruz del Cura”, and to Cabanaconde Village later . Dinner and overnight in the hotel.
Wednesday 22th August - Day 8 : Breakfast at the Hotel and take the horses down inside of one of the deepest canyons in the world (4.5-hour ride). Expect to travel 1200 meters of descent to reach the Llahuar village, where the group will sleep in typical houses of cane (very basic accommodations). Dinner and overnight stay in Llahuar.
Thursday 23th August Day 9 : Breakfast at Llahuar and later start the ride to the Sangalle Oasis (3-hour ride). In the way you can observe the flora composed specially by cactus and a desertic area. Lunch in Sangalle. Afterwards you will refresh yourself in the natural pools of the oasis. Dinner and overnight stay in Sangalle in very basic typical accommodations.
Friday 24th August Day 10 : After breakfast you will ride until reach the San Juan de Chuccho village (3-hour ride), you will ride along the Colca River at the bottom of the canyon and will experience the immensity of the landscape. You will cross the “lost” villages of Malata and Cosnirhua. You will also cross small rivers, and in some parts, you will have to walk. Lunch in San Juan. In the afternoon you will do a experiential tourism: Visit the crops and talk with the villagers to discover the local life style. Dinner and overnight stay in very basic accommodations.
Saturday 25th August Day 11 : After Breakfast you will start to climb the canyon with the horses. For safety of the rider and the horse, a big part of this portion will be made walking along side the horse in this marvelous environment. Arrive again in Cabanaconde Village. You will come back in a private transportation to your Hotel in Arequipa.
Sunday 26th August Day 12:Breakfast at the hotel, then we'll go to the regional contest of Peruvian Paso for the half day and to live an exepcional moment in the show of the gait of this race that was introduced by Spanish Conquerors, without crossing with other race since then, and whose most beautiful specimens will act this day. At the end of the afternoon we'll return to the Airport to go back.
