Cariboo Wilderness - Siwash Lake Ranch
British Columbia
Canada
A private and exclusive guest ranch - an intimate adventure hideaway in the heart of British Columbia's cowboy country
Big comforts, small footprint. Come and enjoy this Eco-friendly mix of the rustic and refined.
This is one of the world's premier luxury guest ranches, surrounded by 80,000 acres of pristine British Columbia wilderness. Wildlife thrives here among our natural grasslands, forests, lakes, and rivers. This remarkable, Eco-friendly setting provides a refreshing oasis of wilderness solitude, filled with enriching moments for adventurous people who seek the finer things in life.
The cowboy culture of the Cariboo is still alive here with a mix between Eco-friendliness of the 21st century and hardiness of the Old West. This luxurious resort offers comfort and style in secluded wilderness, perfect for romantic getaways or family fun adventures. The ranch is generally adult-oriented in the Spring and the Fall, while families enjoy the horseback and fly-fishing activities all throughout the summer. Whenever you visit, you’ll enjoy a world class wilderness experience!
The "signature" riding program is unrivaled at other luxury guest ranches world wide and ensures that horseback riding vacations at this ranch are extraordinary holidays that feature guided riding to your heart’s desire, for first-time beginners through to advanced riders, with the option of riding on your own as well.
The Quarter, Arab and Appaloosa horses are well loved and well trained and there is always one to suite your riding level and needs. If you have a partner or family members that don’t ride, not to worry. They can pass the time fly fishing safaris, guided Eco-adventures, canoeing, hiking and much more!
This Eco-friendly boutique lodge has been awarded a Five Green Keys award (by the Hotel Association of Canada, given to an establishment that exemplifies the highest standards of environment responsibility in all areas of operation). It is constructed of hand-hewn spruce logs and overlooks Siwash Lake. The lodge is south facing, allowing for maximum sunshine that is both enjoyable and practical: solar provides half of the ranch’s needs. Enjoy a drink on the spacious deck and discuss your day’s ride or escape to a private verandah for your own quiet contemplation.
The trek off the beaten path is worth it: at the end you’ll find a soul-pleasing blend of the rustic and refined. Luxurious accommodations, fine dining and warm hospitality wait to provide the ultimate guest ranch experience.
Enjoy the freedom to roam 80,000 acres of pristine range land on a horse to call yours for duration of stay. A dream ranch vacation and riding holiday where Eco-adventure, luxury and horsemanship entwine in the wilds to create an unforgettable experience in beautiful British Columbia. Along with riding, cast to trout on sparkling waters, hike a canyon to nearby waterfalls, mountain bike the back-country or paddle a canoe across shimmering Siwash Lake. Try the sustainable living workshop or a wilderness survival class, land stewardship project or interpretive nature walk. This dude ranch offers the discerning family or couple a spectacular wilderness experience.
Later, indulge in fine cuisine and complete comfort at this unique guest ranch—savour ranch grown, organic food that rivals fine city dining and then sleep amidst the softest linens. Siwash is family operated and features a boutique wilderness lodge, akin to country estates of the “Old West”, and within its honey-hued log walls, you'll enjoy a soul-pleasing blend of the rustic and the refined.
The ranch offers the best in dude ranch vacations tailored to individual needs—a guest ranch adventure with the luxury of outstanding personal service, attention to detail, and a unique riding program in Canada. The perfect place for upscale family holidays and romantic, adult-oriented vacations.

You and your horse will be spending a lot of time together while you're at the ranch. The best way to bond with your new partner is to take part in his/her daily care. You will learn basic horse care, how to saddle your horse each morning., and grooming rituals before you leave in the morning and when you return in the afternoon. Many riders enjoy the opportunity to spend this special time with their horse.
Your first day on the ranch is spent getting acquainted with your surroundings; natural western horsemanship and wilderness tip are high on the agenda. Once you are accustomed to the area you can ride as little or as much as you please. Explore the miles of paths that meander out from the ranch and span over 80,000 acres of range-land. Discover pine forests, aspen groves, old growth woods and enchanting meadows of wildflowers. You can explore a secret river canyon, check on the ranch cattle or meditate in the quiet serenity of the priceless back-country.
The ranch is unique among others: after some introductory riding with a guide and demonstrating an understanding of the wilderness setting, accomplished riders are free to ride solo if desired. If not, a guide is always available to accompany you on a ride. Groups are kept to a maximum of 6 riders to ensure safety and pleasure for each trip. The route and duration of the ride is tailored to the wishes of the guests, and you won't find any nose-to-tail action here! Riders are welcome to break at any time and spread out on a sunny knoll and enjoy the scent of clover that wafts through the air. Listen to the call of the loon, the howl of a coyote or the gentle hum of dragonflies buzzing by. If you choose to roam the range all day a delicious packed lunch will be waiting in your saddle bag. On cool fall or spring days lunch is often around a campfire along the trail.
Range Rider Package:
Designed for the horseback riding enthusiast with riding experience. We include 3 guided rides to get you familiar with the horses and terrain and then you can ride all day on you own and explore the countryside (min of 2 riders for safety reasons). Of course also all other non guided activities are included.
Deluxe Signature Package:
This option includes the same as the Range Ride package, but also offer options for fully guided horseback riding during your stay, guided fly fishing, survival safaris, skeet shooting, or guided hikes.
The following is only a sample week. This is a suggested itinerary with lots of room for suggestions and changes, according to each individual desire. Horseback riding is considered the main event and riders come for the amazing horses. If riding is not your thing - or you'd like a break - try some fly fishing, especially good during June and September. Length of stays on the ranch can range from three nights to two weeks.
Arrival Day Check in anytime between 3pm - 6pm and settle in to your accommodations. Take a walk around the ranch and meet the horses. Go for a swim in the lake. Hors d’oeuvres are served at 5:30pm in the great room followed by a three course dinner in the fine dining room. Enjoy an orientation talk with the owners, your hosts, to plan out the next few days. Campfire that night with star gazing before bed.
Day Two (Intro Day to Horse Program) Wake up tray with freshly brewed coffee or tea and home baked muffins delivered to your room at 8am and make your way to general breakfast at 9am on the sundeck overlooking the lake. At 10am, head down to the barn for the horse program. Orientation is lead by the owner with an introduction to your personal horse. Here, you will learn skills for ground work, horse care, how to saddle up, riding and route finding. Head out for a short introduction ride on the trails. Lunch at the lodge. Long afternoon ride (duration as you prefer) including time to groom and care for your horse at day’s end. Take a quick swim after riding, then hors d'ouevres at 5:30pm on the deck, and dinner at 6:30pm. After dinner, learn the art of fly tying and tie some flies for your fishing safari scheduled for the following day.
Day 3 (Full Day Fishing Safari) - or more riding
Wake up tray to your room at 8am, breakfast at 9am and then at 10am it's off in the ranch's 4x4 with your guide for a full day fishing safari. Picnic lunch. For beginner through advanced with fly casting from shore, spin casting, trolling from a boat with wet flies, pontoon boats, or float tubes - the choice is yours. Back to the ranch at 4pm. Game of bocce ball or badminton in the meadow before appetizers and dinner. Sunset hike or bike after dinner.
Day Four (Horse Program – Morning and Afternoon rides) Wake up tray to your room at 8am followed by breakfast at 9am on the sundeck overlooking the lake. At 10:00am, head down to the barn for the horse program. Morning ride can last from 1 -2.5 hours, your choice. We never repeat trails except for main routes on to the range from the ranch. Lunch back at the lodge. Long afternoon ride (from 2 - 5pm if you wish) including time to groom and care for your horse at day’s end. Take a snooze in the hammock before hors d’ouevres served on the deck at 5:30pm. Dinner al fresco in the meadow by request followed by canoeing on the lake until dusk (it doesn’t get dark at Siwash in the summer months until 9:30-10:00pm at night).
Day Five (Horse Program – All Day Ride) Wake up tray to your room at 8am, breakfast at 9AM, down to the barn for a full morning’s ride—2 hours—with campfire lunch out on the range. Swim in a river if you wish. Ride again all afternoon, returning to the ranch at 5:00PM (or earlier if you wish) to untack and groom your horse. Relax with a good book on the sundeck before hors d’ouevres and dinner, then play a board game beside the river rock fireplace in the evening.
Departure Day Wake up tray to your room at 8am, breakfast at 9am, quick bike ride, hike, canoe or swim, tearful goodbye to the horses and other ranch critters, then check out at 11:30am.

Riding horses is the highlight of a ranch holiday and we have a beautiful, well-loved and well-trained herd available to suit your experience. The horses come in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors and temperaments. There are Quarter horses, Arabs, Appaloosas, Standard Breds, Morgans, Paints, Thoroughbreds and some mixed breed, all-around great saddle horses. You'll be treated to your own horse for the duration of your stay, with extra care taken in giving you a mount that matches your abilities and personality. All guests will have the pleasure of personal riding and outdoors instruction, and first-time riders and those with less experience will be encouraged to progress at their own pace. They as well, might soon find the freedom to ride without a guide. All guests are welcome to practice walking, trotting and loping (cantering) their horses.
Children ages 7 and older who demonstrate an ability to safely control their own horse are welcome to ride the trails with their parents. If a child is under 12 years of age, participation in an unescorted group will be at the discretion of the owners, based on the child's riding ability and maturity. Those children needing more practice can be led around the barn area and home meadow when the opportunity arises. Otherwise, parents may enjoy riding time while their kids are happily playing back at the ranch, under the close supervision of the children counselor. “Book the whole

This is an especially good time to spot a wide variety of wildlife.

Winter Crisp, dry days with clear clue skies, bright sunshine and 1-3 ft. of fresh snow. Average temperatures are -5° to -15° Celsius, (+10° to +25° Fahrenheit) but can drop to -20° to -40° Celsius (0° to -40° Fahrenheit).

Eco Rating
The ranch has been awarded Five Green Keys by the Hotel Association of Canada. A Five Green Key eco-rating is awarded to a hotel that exemplifies the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility throughout all areas of operations. The ranch employs cutting edge technologies, policies, and programs which set the international standard for sustainable hotel operations.
The ranch is located completely off the grid and uses solar power. Every other aspect of the ranch has been designed or is currently undergoing a retro-fit to be eco-friendly as well.
