Cotopaxi Adventure Ride

Cotopaxi Adventure Ride
Highlands Riding Tours Ecuador

A carefully planned out and executed horseback riding circuit of the perfectly conical, snow-capped Cotopaxi volcano, taking you through breathtaking, wild open country. We see some of the best that Cotopaxi National Park has to offer and visit the seldom accessed, wide open plains of the high Andes. Up here you have an opportunity to see the unique Andean wildlife, including the mighty Andean Condor among the other impressive flying raptors, the adorable high altitude hummingbirds, the stealthy foxes and shy deer, as we cross a variety of natural scenery filled with rugged mountain passes, barren and lunar-like landscapes, wild and long grassy plains and rolling, green hills.  The riding pace is varied for your interest, including plenty of chances for long and thrilling canters across the open wilderness. At times, the ground is carpeted with the most beautiful stretches of wild flowers as we pass by primary woodlands of the region's native flora. Along the way, we cross over the old lava flows, intriguingly dotted with rocks that have catapulted out from the insides of the erupting volcano, where only lichens grow and the streams fed by snow's melt will run red from the heavy iron deposits. The glacial retreat and the volcanic activity have sculpted the most curious landscapes for you to discover. Some days, we will ride along the ancient Inca routes of the area, on others we pass by modern day but rural and traditional adobe cottages and the patchwork fields, farmed by the rather charming and very friendly local people. The children are often out and about, herding errant pigs and donkeys, waving hello to us as we pass! At the end of each day's riding adventure, we overnight in a wonderful mixture of haciendas and farmhouses selected especially for your cultural enjoyment, built of adobe with the characteristic thatched roofs, original Inca stone. One rather comfortable lodge on the trail is surprisingly built of straw bales covered with adobe!
