Italy
This exciting new trip starts out in the Province of Isernia in the region of Molise and ventures into the Abruzzo region just north of there. This is a region largely forgotten by the tourist hords that you can find in Tuscany or Amalfi - even the local Italian travelers have jet not discovered the "Jewel in the Rough". It offers untouched nature and breathtaking mountain vistas. Because of its mountainous terrain, the economy of the region has for centuries been highly dependent on the transit of shepherds and their flocks from Abruzzo to Puglia. We follow their paths across the hills and through the valleys on our two wonderful mountain treks. This part of Italy is so unspoilt that UNESCO protects two forests as part of the project MAB (Man And Biosphere). This spacious, green and clean region with its large woods of beach and oak, meadows and rivers is ideal for a holiday on horseback.The tack is Western, but Western riding experience is not required. The horses are mostly easy going and reliable Quarter horses.
Our two treks will take you into two Natiuonal Parks - Parco Nazionale della Majella and Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo
Parco Nazionale della Majella
This 75,000 acre park is one of the biggest in Italy. It is a so-called Pan Park, which means that it is protected by World Wildlife Fund. One of the highlights is Pescocostanzo, a picturesque medieval town at an altitude of 5,200 feet. Two nights will be spent in this lovely place. It is surrounded by several plains which invite to many nice canters.
Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo
This 50.000 acre park, founded in 1922, has still plenty of wildlife. There are wolves, bears, eagles, deer and many more species. In the Valley of Five Miles we enjoy a long canter before we climb up to 6,300 feet the next day to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views over the mountains and valleys. There are not many places left in Europe where you can feel so completely in the middle of nowhere. On Thursday there will be a picnic in Camosciara, which is one of the most protected areas of this National Park.

TREKKING THROUGH “PARCO
NAZIONALE DELLA MAJELLA “
This National Park is the eighth
so-called Pan Park in Europe. It is protected by WWF. On the tablelands many
canters will be made.
Day 1 You are expected to arrive on Saturday evening. After a
welcome drink there will be dinner with your hosts. A three-course Italian
dinner will be served every night, accompanied by local wines.
Day 2 The morning is yours.
You may sleep late, take your time over breakfast, do whatever you like.
Before lunch there are a safety-briefing and a short demonstration in
western riding. After lunch we do a test-ride (3 hours) to enable you
to get acquainted with the horse you are going to ride on the trekking.
Dinner and overnight are at the farm-house.
Day 3 We ride through large
stretches of woods and fields and eventually stop for a picnic at an idyllic
spot. After lunch we pass the remains of a Samnitic temple. The Samnites
were the original population of Molise. It took the Romans three centuries
of warfare before they finally conquered this region, which then became part
of the Roman Empire (79 B.C.). Later we stop at a high hill from where you
can see the Majella. At the end of the day we reach San Pietro Avellana.
Here we dine and spend the night.
Day 4 Today’s destination is
the small town of Pescocostanzo. The trail takes us through increasingly
high mountains. At the end of the afternoon we ride through large stretches
of valley. Having spent about 7 hours on horseback we are bound to be
longing for a drink. Pescocostanzo has a nice square with several bars and
restaurants. Taking a walk in this picturesque medieval town is pleasant for
everyone and a must for those who are interested in architecture. We are
staying at a hotel. Dinner is at a restaurant.
Day 5 The National Park
Majella (75.000 acres) is one of the biggest in Italy. It is a so-called Pan
Park, which means that it is protected by WWF. Today there will be a 6
hours’ ride in surrounding highlands. We expect to be able to have nice
canters here. The night will be spent at the same hotel. Dinner, however, is
at a different restaurant.
Day 6 This is going to be a demanding day spending about 8 hours in
the saddle. The first part of our trail takes us upwards towards a large
valley whereas the next stretch is a long forest road, leading us down and
down again. Part of that road must be covered on foot! In the early evening
we finally reach our destination. Dinner is at a restaurant in Alfedena and
we spend the night at the comfortable “Hotel Katja”.
Day 7 Just outside Alfedena
there is a plain where we can go for a long canter. A little later we pass
Ponte della Zittola, which is the border between Abruzzi and Molise. Then we
follow part of the Tratturo Castel di Sangro - Foggia in the foothills of
Alto Molise. Having passed the hamlet Montalto it is time for a picnic.
After lunch it takes three hours to ride home. About 6 p.m. we are back at
the farm-house, unsaddle the horses for the last time and enjoy farewell
dinner.
Day 8
Departure after breakfast.
TREKKING THROUGH “PARCO
NAZIONALE D’ABRUZZO “
This National Park was founded in
1921. By now it is over 50.000 acres. There still is a lot of wild-life,
including wolves and even bears.
Day 1 You are expected to
arrive on Saturday evening. After a welcome drink there will be dinner with
your hosts. A three-course Italian dinner will be served every night,
accompanied by local wines.
Day 2 The morning is yours. You may sleep late, take your time over
breakfast, do whatever you like. Before lunch there are a safety-briefing
and a short demonstration in western riding. After lunch we
do a test-ride (3 hours) to enable you
to get acquainted with the horse you are going to ride on the trekking.
Dinner and overnight are at the farm-house.
Day 3 At about 10 a.m. we get
in the saddle and follow the Tratturo Celano - Foggia. A Tratturo is a 2.000
years old track that is still used to move cattle from the far south where
grass is scarce in summer. Picnic is in Montedimezzo. The hunting lodge
which belonged to the royal family of Bourbon nowadays contains a museum.
The forest is protected by UNESCO. Worldwide this organisation protects 256
forests. Four of them are located in Italy; two of which in Molise. We
continue along the Tratturo as far as the river Sangro. Here we leave the
Tratturo to follow small paths. Sunbathing lizards take to their heels. The
air smells like the Italian kitchen. Rosemary and thyme grow everywhere.
Next we climb through a forest after which we reach Roccaraso. Here we dine
and spend the night. Roccaraso is at an altitude of 3,600 feet a.s.l. It is
locally a well-known ski-resort.
Day 4 After breakfast we leave
Roccaraso behind us and reach the Piano delle cinque Miglia (the valley of
five Miles). Here we enjoy a long canter! At the end of the valley the first
tall mountains loom up at either side, a gravel road takes us to the
Montagna Spaccata (split mountain) where benches and old oaks tempt us to
stop. The narrow, stony road, going up and up, takes us to a watertrough
where the horses can drink, while we enjoy the view over the valley. We
continue our climb till all of a sudden there is an open space in the forest
that offers a beautiful panorama. After this we lead the horses on foot
until we reach “Agriturismo Jovana” (mountain hut) where lunch is served.
The owner has won various awards for his “ricotta” (cheese). After lunch we
follow the gravel road which takes us upwards to Scanno. Outside the village
the horses are left in riding centre “Il Ranch”. Enrico will pick us up with
a mini-bus and takes us to his hotel. Dinner is at a restaurant in the
historical centre of Scanno. After dinner we usually make a walk to admire
this old village.
Day 5
Today is going to be challenging! We leave the civilized world behind us and
ride through the unspoilt nature of the mountains of the Parco Nazionale
d'Abruzzo where no cars are allowed. With a bit of luck we should come
across wild boars or some deer. The wolves and bears keep away from the
clatter of hoofs. A brooklet shows the way through the mountains. After a
long climb we halt at 6,300 feet a.s.l. and enjoy the panoramic view. The
mountain peaks are covered by snow until late spring. Then we lead the
horses down on foot. It is too steep here to stay mounted. Having reached
the right path we mount again and ride through extensive forests. In a
meadow we have a picnic and if the weather is fine you might like a nap.
After this the route continues through the forests until we reach
Pescasseroli. After the long ride we deserve a good dinner and that is what
we are going to have at the lovely place of Eleonora.
Day 6 Today there are many
miles to cover so you will be in the saddle for abt. 8 hours. After
breakfast we return to unspoilt nature. The route gets steeper and if the
sun is shining everyone will be hot. Having arrived in a valley there is a
canter to enjoy. Around noon we arrive at Val Fondillo. There are almost
four miles to be covered on foot. Unfortunately this is an asphalt road. It
leads to one of the most protected areas of the National Park, Camosciara.
Here we stop for picnic. After many miles there is the (storage) lake of
Barrea deep down on the left. And on we go, this time through a different
type of forest until, most likely exhausted, we reach Sandra's riding
centre. The horses are left there. Dinner is at a restaurant in Alfedena and
we spend the night at the comfortable "Hotel Katja".
Day 7 The last stage leads
through Alfedena. The mountains of the Parco Nazionale are now behind us.
Just outside Alfedena there is a plain where we can go for a long canter. A
little later we pass Ponte della Zittola, which is the border between
Abruzzi and Molise. Then we follow part of the Tratturo Castel di Sangro -
Foggia in the foothills of Alto Molise. Having passed the hamlet Montalto it
is time for a picnic. After lunch it takes three hours to ride home. About 6
p.m. we are back at the farm-house, unsaddle the horses for the last time
and enjoy the farewell dinner.

N.B. Due to
weather or other unforeseen circumstances the program may have to be
adapted.
The number of hours
spent in the saddle, however, as well as the destinations remain unaltered.
Final remarks
In this rural and unspoilt part of
Italy, far from the madding crowd, “festina lente” (hurry slowly) is part of
the life-style, as are late dining hours. We may not always be able to keep
a strict time-table, but we do hope you will enjoy the “dolce vita”, the
delicious Italian food and excellent wines, nature and absence of stress!

Horses
Most of the horses are Quarter Horses and Paints. The horses have been selected for their character and looks. They are intelligent and easy-going. All year long they live in the paddocks around the house. This natural way of life makes them happy horses. They were all born in the mountains. Therefore they are very reliable in this mountainous area. These horses will make you feel safe and secure.
Most of them are related in some way or the other.
There are 6 Quarter Horses, 1 Appaloosa, 2 Paints, 1 Freiberger, 4 Cross-breeds

Riding pace and comments
Parco Nazionale della Maiella
This national park is being protected by WWF. We will ride partly along its southern border. On Wednesday we pass through the forest of S. Antonio. A few trees are over 300 years old!
Pescocostanzo is surrounded by several high-lands where you can canter a lot. In June we are not allowed to ride everywhere we like, because the farmers have to get the hay. Still, there are several canters. In October, however, on Wednesday all the canters together last about one hour. On Thursday morning another very long canter awaits before picnic. And on Friday morning another long one (same ride as the Friday during “Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo”).
This trek is not suited for riders who suffer from problems with their legs or knees. On Thursday afternoon we have to descend a mountain chain and go on foot for 10 minutes.
Parco Nazionale d’AbruzzoThere are not many places left in Europe where nature is so “wild”. We climb up to 6,300 feet. With some luck we get to see wild-life, like deer and wild-boars. In June there are many rare flowers blossoming, like f.e. wild daffodils.
The days in the saddle are rather long. Therefore this trail is not recommended to less experienced riders. As we are in the (high) mountains there are not too many canters. Two of them, however, are fantastic! On Tuesday morning we canter through the Five Mile Valley and on Friday morning there also is a canter of several miles.
Tack
Western saddles -- 5 hackamore bosals, 2 snaffle bits, 7 broken curb bits.
All saddles have a little
saddle bag on the horn. There are about 6 extra rain coats which can be
borrowed. First come, first served!
Helmet / hard hatAlthough the Italian law does not require that riders wear helmets, we would appreciate it very much if you bring and wear a riding helmet.
Riding hours:
Majella: You ride 6 to 8 hours per full riding day.
Abruzzo: You ride 7 to 9 hours per full riding day.
This is an adventurous trail for the fit rider. It is quite a strenuous trail but the rewards are magnificent.
Maximum weight
The landscape is mountainous. The hours in the saddle are many. This means hard work for the horses.
The weight limit is 90 kg / 200 lbs. Sometimes we can accept a rider who weighs a few kilos/pounds more. This depends on his/her height, experience, composition of the group and the program. Only 3 bigger/stronger horses are available.
Age:
The minimum age is 12 years if accompanied by an adult, otherwise it is 16.
Number of Riders:
The
minimum is 6 riders and the maximum is 10. Should the minimum of 6
riders not be reached ... we will offer an alternate itinerary (then
minimum is of 2).
Fund for refreshments and snacks:
For the trek we collect Euro 30 per person to go into a mutual fund for
refreshments on our way plus drinks and snacks other than at meals.
Transfers:
Please leave plenty of time for this journey to be on the safe side, you
can always look around Rome if you are there early and waiting for the
train. The Coliseum is just a short walk from the train station.
There is only one transfer on the day of arrival as well as on the day
of departure. Additional individual transfers are NOT possible!
Transfer on the day of arrival: 19.45 hours from the Isernia train
station (train with destination Campobasso). Take the 5:15 PM train from
Rome !
Transfer on the day of departure: 09.0 hours -- you can take the 9:33 AM train to Rome .
The journey from Isernia to Rome airport takes at least four hours.
Therefore we appreciate it if you do not book the return flight before
15.00 hours.

As a result of environmental differences between the coastline and the inland mountains, and varying distances from the sea, the climate has a wide range of characteristics, from the typically maritime (modest variations in temperature, mild weather in all seasons, scarce precipitations) to the continental characteristics of the mountainous interior (marked differences in temperature in contrasting seasons and between day and night, heavy precipitations, including snow, up to over 2,500 mm./year, at higher altitudes). Rainfall is most frequent and heaviest in late autumn and early spring, though of short duration, but lasts longer in winter, with peak levels in November and the lowest levels in July.

On Saturday, Sunday and Friday the
riders stay overnight at the farm of the equestrian center where your
hosts will be doing the cooking. During the trek (4 nights) you
will sleep in charming country inns. Single accommodations are available during these 4 nights.
The Farm / Riding Center: Italian
born and native Carmine and his Dutch wife Astrid welcome you in their
farm house, dating from 1885, which is at an elevation of about 3,000
feet. The house is at the edge of a forest and overlooks a beautiful
valley. The nearest neighbors live in Carovilli, a little village 4
miles away. This is the right place to relax and get away from your busy
life. You will spend 3 nights in total here. The
house is not that big, but very comfortable for up to 8 riders. It has been completely
renovated in 2003. Upstairs there is a room with a double bed and downstairs a dormitory
with four single beds and one double bed. The first couple who books,
will get the room upstairs. Other riders will be divided over the
dormitory. There are two bathrooms with all modern conveniences. The living-room has a nice fireplace, a piano and a
bookcase.
If you prefer more privacy on
Saturday, Sunday and Friday we can arrange for a room (with private
bath) in the nearby B&B (8 minutes by car) with a supplemental
charge - transfers are provided. Riders number 9 and 10 will be accommodated there as well and will have to pay this supplement.

Meals
Meals are served on
the terrace or in the kitchen and in restaurants during the trek.
You can be assured that at all these destinations you will be comfortable and very well fed.
The
food is wonderful with great care being taken to provide local
specialties cooked with fresh ingredients. Vegetarians and those with
special diets can be catered for with prior notice. Carmine used to own a
restaurant and this is apparent from the wonderful recipes he shares
with his guests. You may be lucky and find that Astrid will let you have
these recipes when you leave! Astrid's tiramisu is the very best.
Breakfast is usually 'continental'. Expect
a lot of delicious pasta, salads, cheese and bread. You will also taste
the juiciest, sweetest tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, tasty salami and
other delights like tiramisu and fresh peaches. Lunchtime often
consists of salami, cheese and bread for a picnic style lunch,
accompanied with a glass of crisp wine.
Wines and beers are included
during meals. All other drinks must be paid for, unless the hosts
arrange a 'fuondo casa' which is like a kitty. A share of this is
usually about 30€ for the week and covers extra drinks, ice creams etc.
You will never go hungry here! Our own testers called the food 'imaginative and delectable' and 'original and sumptuous'!.
