A mountain range that spans from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and
incorporates a wide range of different languages, cultures, climates,
terrain and people. the Pyrenees are a wonderful setting for an off the
beaten path hiking adventure. Discover impressive limestone peaks,
rugged trails, isolated villages that stand still in time. To the
Spanish side you can expect ruined forts and watchtowers, terraces of
olives trees and vineyards. Here, when work stops in the fields it is
time to slip into another rhythm, it is the relaxing hour of the
‘tapas’; time to taste some delicious flavors of small mouth watering
appetizers with a local aperitif such as ‘banyuls’ before sitting down
to a meal of Catalan cuisine. Further east, in the French Ariège you
will find a county of medieval towns and mystic, hilltop Cathar
castles. Walking along the old paved path ‘the weaver’s route’ you
traverse a page of history that will grab your imagination. It is a
land of deep blue lakes and lush valleys, remarkable for Pyrenean
wildlife, marmots, wild boar, foxes, roe deer, isards, moufflons,
vultures and eagles.
Our
Pyrenees walking holidays allow you to discover landscapes of immense
natural beauty. Walk through lush, green valleys and rolling hills to
dramatic, snowy mountains and the dry, Mediterranean and
Catalan-influenced east. The Pyrenees are home to the famous GR10, a
famous French walking route that runs from one end of the Pyrenees to
the other. It roughly follows the France-Spain border. From the
Atlantic Ocean through the Pyrenees chain to the Mediterranean, the
GR10 provides walking holidays that never cease to amaze. The Pyrenees
have an unspoiled, wild terrain, rich in unique flora and wildlife but
also steeped in political and religious intrigue.
When
you’re ready for rest from all the physical activity of your vacation,
just take a break at one of your scheduled stops, where you’re sure to
receive a warm welcome, great cuisine, and a host of local wines.
The six hiking trails follow the length of the GR10 and can be walked in single sections, combined sections, or as a whole.
Section 1: Hendaye – Saint Jean Pied de Port
The first section covers a variety of landscapes typical of the Pays Basque region, set in the heart of the Atlantic Pyrenees. The scenery has a charm and regional originality that you won’t find elsewhere. Rolling hills, magical villages, such as Sare, Ainhoa and Dancharia that are seeped in Basque tradition, and a rich Pyrenean flora and fauna are all waiting to be discovered.
Section 2: Saint Jean Pied de Port – Estaut
From St Jean Pied de Port to Etsaut the GR10 weaves its way through villages typical of the region such as Estérençuby or the hamlet of Logibar. After Logibar, Sainte-Engrace, the most oriental of the basque mountain villages. From here the GR10 goes into a typically Pyrenean, high mountain setting. In gaining altitude you will reach La Pierre Saint-Martin before descending upon the village of Lescun, renowned for its famous glacial cirque. The best part of the walk awaits you at the end at the village of Estaut, in the Aspe valley, gateway to the famous Pyrenean National park.
Section 3: Estaut – Cauterets
From Etsaut to Cauterets, the GR10 takes you through the Pyrenean National Park, a place of exceptional flora and fauna. Setting off from Etsaut you will reach the grandiose surroundings of the Ossau valley, that affords a spectacular view of the pyramid-shaped Pic de Midi d’Ossau (2884m). From Gabas to Arrens valley you encounter a succession of lakes and villages in stone and slate and a never-ending wilderness that serves as summer pastures. Discover the Arrens and Estaing valleys and the spa town of Cauterets, capital of the Bigorre.
Section 4: Cauterets – Barèges
From Cauterets to Barèges, via the high valley of Luz-Saint-Sauveur and the col de Riou, where there is a splendid panoramic view, you will visit villages renowned for the benefits of their thermal waters. The itinerary then makes its way through a succession of lakes, mountain passes, at more than 2000m altitude, and mountain villages. You will cross the Nature Reserve in Néouvielle and its remarkable glacial lakes, before reaching Bagnères-de-Luchon, the belle of the Pyrenees.
Section 5: Luchon – Aulus-les-Bains
From Luchon to Aulus-les-bains, the GR10 follows ancient passages that were used as a means of communication between the deep valleys. Here, the itinerary follows a rural and forestry trail around the Piedmont villages of Artigue and Melles-en-Comminges and the hamlets of Eylie, Bouche, Aunac and Bidous before rejoining another thermal station, Aulus-les-bains. The walk between Comminges and the Haute Ariège will take you through some remarkable flora: Gispet (widespread grass that thrives on high altitude terrain), rhododendron flowers, blueberries and majestic beach and fir trees.
Section 6: Aulus-les-Bains – Mérens
From Aulus-les-bains to Mérens in Haute Ariège you cross the Western and the central sections of the Pyrenees and the ariégeoise part of the chain. This region is identifiable by its high plateau landscapes, deep valleys hemmed in by soaring summits, sometimes dusted with snow, and mountain lakes whose waters change in color. In the evenings, at your accommodation, superb Ariégeoise cuisine will set you up you for the next day ahead of you.
Section 7: From Merens les Vals to Vernet les Bains
From the extremities of the Haute-Ariege to the distant shores of the Cote Vermeille the eastern Pyrenean mountains gradually taper towards the Rousillon Plain. Going from the dizzy heights of the Capcir plateaux, the Pays de Conflent and Vallespir to the bases of the majestic summits of Carlit in Capcir or Canigou close to French Catalonia.

GR 10 – Section 1
From Hendaye to St Jean Pied de Port
Pyrénées - Self-guided walking - 7 days
Who wouldn’t be tempted to traverse from end to end the entire Pyrenean chain of mountains on foot. The mythic GR10 starts at the Atlantic ocean and crosses over more than 258 miles of dazzling mountains to arrive at the Mediterranean coast. You amble through stunning scenery that varies enormously, from flower filled meadows, sparkling lakes, cirques and high summits. You’ll get a taste of many different cultures, from the Basque country through to Catalonia. Each valley you pass through has its own distinct flavour. It is a great way to explore local life and to absorb the differences, the Pyrenees is a unique blend of many different people.
The first section, from Hendaye to Saint Jean Pied de Port, covers a variety of landscapes typical of the Pays Basque region, set in the heart of the Atlantic Pyrenees. The scenery has a charm and regional originality that you won’t find elsewhere. Rolling hills, magical villages, such as Sare, Ainhoa and Dancharia that are seeped in Basque tradition, and a rich pyrenean flora and fauna are all waiting to be discovered. At the end of the walk you will reach the villages of Bidarray and Saint Etienne de Baigorry with the sumptuous Iparla mountain ridge in the background.
Day to Day
Day 1 : Start of holiday in Hendaye
Depending on your arrival time, after checking into your hotel, you may choose to walk in the region of Domaine d’Abbadia. A fantastic natural site of 65 hectares situated right on the coast. You will find a great mix of landscapes, moors, prairies, heather and high cliffs. You can also visit the famouse néo gothic chateau, the Domaine d'Abbadie. Distance : 5km, duration : 3h00, altitude gain : +60m, descent : -60m.
Day 2 : Hendaye to Ibardin
Hendaye lies on the estuary of the River Bidassoa, which forms the border with Spain. The GR10 walking route begins its course on Hendaye Plage. Rising rapidly above the Atlantic, this first stage of the walk is pleasant. The landscape, scattered with villages, is peaceful and harmonious with the rolling hillsides. The ambience is very basque but there is no sign yet of the high dramatic mountains to come. Distance : 12km, duration : 4h15, altitude gain : +610m, descent : -293m.
Day 3 : Olhette to Dancharia
The first outlines of the distant mountains can be spotted on the horizon. You have the chance to reach the summit of La Rhune. At an altitude of 980m it is considered the first peak in the Pyrenean chain. You pass picturesque villages, Sare and d’Ainhoa are scarcely more than single streets lined with large houses. The houses (mostly dating from the 17th century) have stone lintels carved with the dates of their construction and details of their family's history. Once in the village of Dnacharia you are situated at just 3km from the Spanish border. Distance : 16km, duration : 6h45, altitude gain : +535m, descent : -580m.
Day 4 : Dancharia to the Col des Veaux
Today the GR10 passes a series of summits, crossing over high mountain passes, it winds its way around l’Erebi alt 583m, and then further on l’Axulegi alt 617m. You will see the col Zuccuta, the high mountain pass that is a superb belvedere. From the col, weather permitting, you can take the track route to the Col des Veaux or if it's fine you might choose to stay on the ridge, this is not part of the GR10 but the variant is worth it for the views. The ridge leads all the way to the Pic Gorospil at 691m you can get some superb panoramas. Distance : 11km, duration : 4h00, altitude gain : +525m, descent : -113m.
Day 5 : Col des Veaux to Bidarray
The GR10 continues to alternate between the Pyrenean summits and mountain villages that have a strong Basque identity. The trail heads in the direction of the Col de Méhatché situated at an altitude of 716m. You pass into a rocky landscape that is home to the griffin vultures that circle high above. You descend to Bidarray village, an emblamatic nightstop that is vibrant with the characteristic Basque culture and lifestyle. Distance : 11km, duration : 3h30, altitude gain : +195m, descent : -615m.
Day 6 : Bidarray to Saint Etienne de Baïgorry
Today is a challenging walk and will lead you from Saint Etienne de Baïgorry across some breathtaking scenery, such as extraordinary sandstone cliff faces along the classic ridge walk of the Cresta d’Iparla and the culminating peak of 1044m. Saint Etienne de Baïgorry is made up of a huddle of small hamlets and is prosperous, strongly turned towards agricultue and has the Pays Basque’s only vineyards that produce a good strong red wine. It has an exceptional location in the mountain cirque that encompasses the valley of Nive. The town has an interesting patrimoine and Basque culture . Distance : 17km, duration : 6h45, altitude gain : +1230m, descent : -1220m.
Day 7 : Saint Etienne de Baïgorry to Saint Jean Pied de Port
This is the last section of the first weeks walking on the GR10 trail leading into Saint Jean Pied de Port, in the very heart of the Basque country. There are about six hours challenging walking with 800m ascension and descent before arriving at Saint Jean Pied de Port. Its situation is picturesque, on the banks of the river Nive, it is considered the historical pass way into Spain. Enclosed by walls of pinky red sandstone, the old town is interesting with a single cobbled street, many of the old houses bear inscriptions on the lintels from the 16 and 17th centuries. Distance : 18km, duration : 6h00, altitude gain : +860m, descent : -865m.
End of holiday in Saint Jean Pied de Port
Your holiday comes to an end in Saint Jean Pied de Port, after your walk. Opportunity to visit le bourg, the historical capital of Basse-Navarre.

Program
Day 1 Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the capital of the Pays Basque region. Set a circle of hills at the foot of the Roncevaux pass into Spain. After checking into your hotel A chance to discover the many delights of this seductive region.
Day 2 The trail heads out in an Easterly direction from St Jean towards the nearby hills. Following the deepening valley past small, isolated farms, sparkling mountain streams and steep green slopes. 13km, 5h15, +820m, -390m.
Day 3 The GR10 traverses some stunning, rural countryside along cols and ridges with airy views across the beech filled gullies. There are many species of birds and herds of horses, cows and sheep graze on the hillsides. 18km, 6h45, +1486m, -625m.
Day 4 Heading off from Iraty you follow high mountain passes and ridges with spectacular views across the dense forest. You head towards the ridge of Ugatze at 1170m before heading towards the gite at Logibar. 13km, 5h30, +212m, -1185m.
Day 5 From Logibar, the GR10 joins the cayolar de Saratzé (1205m altitude), via the Olhadoubi and Kakouéta Gorges before arriving at the hamlet of Senta. 15km, 6h30, +1160m, -905m.
Day 6 The GR10 makes its way to the Arres de Camplong and on to the massif of L’Anie, superb views of the Pas d’Azuns mountains. The trail continues into the famous glacier cirque at Lescun. 15km, 5h00, +282m, -1022m.
Day 7 You leave Lescun glacier cirque to arrive at the mountain village of Aspe, gateway to the Pyrenean National park. 13km, 5h45, +790m, -1040m.

From Etsaut to Cauterets, the GR10 takes you through the Pyrenean National Park, a place of exceptional flora and fauna. Setting off from Etsaut you will reach the grandiose surroundings of the Ossau valley, that affords a spectacular view of the pyramid-shaped Pic de Midi d’Ossau (2884m). From Gabas to Arrens valley you encounter a succession of lakes and villages in stone and slate and a never-ending wilderness that serves as summer pastures. Discover the Arrens and Estaing valleys and the spa town of Cauterets, capital of the Bigorre.
Program
Day 1 Once you have settled into your accommodation you can visit the villages of Etsaut and Borce and the Park's mansion. A circular walk that lets you discover the valley d’Etsaut. You will come across lovely scenery as well as relics of the past, such as old mills and barns. You arrive at the Col de la Coundre at an altitude of 1121m. 6km, 3h30, +525m, -525m.
Day 2 Today’s walk is challenging, with 1590m altitude gain, to the refuge at Ayous. Highlight of the day the pyramid shaped mountain Pic d’Ossau, whos reflection shimmers in the waters of the lake de Gentau. 15km, 5h45, +1590m, -540m.
Day 3 Descent to Gabas village in the heart of Ossau. You will pass by the Gentau lakes in Ayous and Bious-Artigues. 8km, 3h00, +20m, -920m.
Day 4 Ascent to the Hourquette d'Arre which, at 2465m, is the culminating point of the GR10 in the Atlantic Pyrenees. A descent via the lake Anglas to Gourette. 14.5km, 6h45, +1500m, -1140m.
Day 5 The trail crosses the border between the Béarn and Bigorre regions to the Col de Tortes at an altitude of 1799m and on to the Col de Saucède at 1525m. 12km, 5h15, +590m, -1055m.
Day 6 The GR makes its way up to the high plains of the Col d’Ilhéou, passing the cabins of Arroussec and Barbat. The col is situated at an altitude of 2242m, from which point the trail drops down to the lake of Ilhéou. 9km, 4h45, +1081m, -267m.
Day 7 To Cauterets passing by the Escala d’Ilhéou, you will have the chance to see marmottes and isards. In this high, airy mountain ambience there are many traces of glacier erosion, lakes and moraines. 7.5km, 3h00, +15m, -1062m.

Program
Day 1 Time to settle into your accommodation in Cauterets. Possibility to visit the thermal spa or the Maison du Parc. Possibility of doing a forest walk in the direction of Turon des Oules, or to continue to the Plateau du Lisey, suspended glacial valley. 7km, 3h15, +450m, -450m.
Day 2 Ascent to the col de Riou, the panorama is immense with views across the valley of Barèges, Néouvielle massif and the cirque of Troumouse. Descent to Luz-Saint-Sauveur a well known thermal spa spot. 18km, 7h00, +1035m, -1230m.
Day 3 This day's walking will allow you to discover the flora and fauna of the Pyrenees, such as the mountain isards and the playful marmottes. The valley of light, ‘vallée lumière’ is a real joy for walkers. 14km, 5h15, +740m, -240m.
Day 4 Walk in the sumptuous natural reserve of Néouvielle. The col Madamète and the lakes Aumar, Aubert, Lacquettes and Orédon are on today's itinerary. 12km, 5h30, +970m, -655m.
Day 5 From Artigusse the trail takes you to the lake de l’Oule, the Col de Portet and the ski resort of Saint Lary. It makes its way across high altitude pastures before descending to the village of Vieille-Aure and on to Azet. 15.5km, 6h45, +990m, -1415m.
Day 6 From Germ you can enjoy some superb views of the French/Spanish summits. Encounter mountain lifestyle and agricultural traditions. Ascension towards Espingo lake, the Granges d’Astau and the Lac d’Oo provide scenery that is a pure marvel. 19km, 7h00, +1560m, -990m.
Day 7 The walk to Luchon will plunge you into a high mountain decor. Traverse the Hourquette des Hounts, altitude 2275m, the mountain pass Col de la Coume de Bourg 2272m and optional ascent of the Pic de Céciré. 15km, 6h30, +365m, -1625m.

GR 10 – Section 5
Pyrénées - Self-guided walking - 7 days
From Luchon to Aulus-les-bains, the GR10 follows ancient passages that were used as a means of communication between the deep valleys. Here, the itinerary follows a rural and forestry trail around the Piedmont villages of Artigue and Melles-en-Comminges and the hamlets of Eylie, Bouche, Aunac and Bidous before rejoining another thermal station, Aulus-les-bains. The walk between Comminges and the Haute Ariège will take you through some remarkable flora : Gispet (widespread grass that gets slippery when wet and thrives on high altitude terrain), rhododendron flowers, blueberries and majestic beach trees that share the forest with fir trees. In Vicdessos you discover more traces of the past when the trail takes you to various ‘jasses’, (an area where the shepherds would gather their sheep near to the river), old shepherd’s cabins and cairns, all signs of an ancient presence.
Program
Day 1 : Start of holiday in Luchon
Your holiday starts at your hotel in Luchon, you may decide to visit the thermal baths with the famous Allés d’Etigny. The village of Cazarilh and Luchon valley Walk in the surrounding countryside to the village of Cazaril-Laspènes, a village with a remarquable church and architecture. Opportunity to walk to the hamlet of Trébons, then Saccourvielle before returning to Luchon. Distance : 6km, duration : 2h30, dénivelé plus : +270m, dénivelé moins : -270m.
Day 2 : Artigue to Fos From Artigue village, you cross a high col called the col de la Peyrahitta at an altitude of 1947m. Just after the col, if you are feeling up to it, you have the chance to climb the Pic de Bacanère, 2193m, this is a good variant and links up with the lake of Dessus. After having crossed Cigalères ridge (2093m) you pass one cabin after another before arriving at the village of Fos at an altitude of 544m. Distance : 16km, duration : 8h00, dénivelé plus : +865m, dénivelé moins : -1550m.
Day 3 : Fos to Araing lake At Labach de Melles, at an altitude of 980m, the GR10 approaches the first foothills of the Ariège mountains. From the Col d’Auéran the GR10 heads to the Etang d’Araing, you can enjoy the large, open, wild spaces and airy views that are famed in this county. Distance : 14km, duration : 4h30, dénivelé plus : +1200m, dénivelé moins : -225m.
Day 4 : Araing lake to Eylie d'en Haut This section links Etang d'Araing to Eylie d'en Haut. It crosses the first part of Ariège by passing through a series of small mountain villages, the architecture and ambience are not to be missed. Distance : 9km, duration : 4h, dénivelé plus : +270m, dénivelé moins : -1230m.
Day 5 : Eylie d'en Haut to Bonac Irazein Wonderful walk in the heart of Couserans, in Ariège, through old villages with splendid views. Couserans is a traditional and natural pyrenean area. Distance : 10km, duration : 5h00, dénivelé plus : +930m, dénivelé moins : -840m.
Day 6 : The hamlet of Bouche to Aunac During the day’s walking you will gravitate between the high mountains and the foothills of the Couserans region. You can enjoy a real kaleidoscope of colour and the superb landscapes of the Pyrenees Ariégeoises. You will discover the Etang de Bethmale which is situated in an oasis of lush greenery, from the Port de la Core at an altitude of 1395m you have a great belvedere in the direction of the reserve natural of Mont Valier, without forgetting the mountain hamlets where time appears to have stood still. Distance : 17km, duration : 6h15m, dénivelé plus : +811m, dénivelé moins : -755m.
Day 7 : Aunac to Aulus les bains Last walk, beginning from Saint Lizier d'Ustou, that will lead you to the thermal city of Aulus les Bains. End of your walk. Distance : 14.5km, duration : 5h00, dénivelé plus : +870m, dénivelé moins : -860m.

Facts About Section 5
Start: at your hotel in Luchon. If you are doing the 4th and 5th section of the GR10, Saturday night in Luchon is offered BB in a hotel (based on two people sharing).
End: in Saint-Girons, or at thegîte (half board) in Aulus, if you are douing the 6th section.
How to get there: Toulouse-Blagnac airport, Luchon station.
Accommodation: 5 nights, in communal dormitories in gites and one night in a hotel BB double room.

GR 10 – Section 6
Pyrénées - Self-guided walking - 7 days
From Aulus-les-bains to Mérens in Haute Ariège you cross the Western and the central sections of the Pyrenees and the ariégeoise part of the chain. This region is identifiable by its high plateau landscapes, deep valleys hemmed in by soaring summits, sometimes dusted with snow, and mountain lakes whose waters change in colour. In the evenings, at your accommodation, superb ariégeoise cuisine will set you up you for the next day ahead of you.
Program
Day 1 After a transfer from Saint Girons to Aulus-les-Bains time to settle into the gite. Option to visit the thermal village or to do a loop walk. A great loop walk from Aulus-les-Bains to a mountain lake and the superb waterfall, the Cascade d’Ars. 9km, 3h00, +500m, -500m.
Day 2 From Aulus les Bains a walk up towards the Port de Saleix (1794m altitude). The beauty of the mountain scenery is awesome, rural barns, fresh, bubbly mountain torrents, a rich Pyrenean flora and an old mine. 10km, 5h30, +1185m, -285m.
Day 3 From the Bassiès refuge, the GR10 passes a series of lakes at Bassiès and leads towards the valley of Auzat. A superb trail continues on from the valley to Goulier, via the village of Olbier. 18km, 5h00, +385m, -930m.
Day 4 From Goulier to Arquizat, the itinerary follows different cols and crosses picturesque mountain hamlets such as Lercoul, Siguer and Gestiès. 16km, 7h30, +870m, -810m.
Day 5 The large open spaces of Pla du Four mark the approach to the plateau of Beille. The plateau has a certain notoriety from its nordic ski station and as being on the itinerary for the famous Tour de France race. 17km, 6h30, +1117m, -1115m.
Day 6 From the plateau de Beille, ascent to the Rulhe refuge via the col des Finestres, Didorte, Belh and Terre Nègre. A high mountain ambience is guaranteed ! 16km, 5h30, +430m, -65m.
Day 7 This is the last day’s walking and the trail is particularly scenic. You will need to set out fairly early, following the GR10 past two mountain lakes to arrive early afternoon at the railway station in Merens. 17km, 5h00, +780m, -1390m.

Start: 15h30, at Saint Girons bus station (welcome possible at 11h30 : if so let us know when you book).

GR 10 – Section 7
Pyrénées - Self-guided walking - 7 days
– From Merens les Vals to Vernet les Bains. High Level Walking Holiday – with baggage carrying
From the extremities of the Haute-Ariege to the distant shores of the Cote Vermeille the eastern Pyrenean mountains gradually taper towards the Rousillon Plain. Going from the dizzy heights of the Capcir plateaux, the Pays de Conflent and Vallespir to the bases of the majestic summits of Carlit in Capcir or Canigou close to French Catalonia..
Leaving from Merens, the high mountains open out onto GR10 with a stop at the Refuge de Besines, altitude 2140m, and another on the famous lakeside of the lake of Bouillouses at 2020m in the Carlit Massive. The crossing of the high Capcir Plateau towards the Pays de Conflent is a pure pleasure for the attentive walker, the discovery of heritage mountain villages, always present and often concentrated around a remarkable Roman church like at Planes or Mantet, not forgetting the stop at Caranca and the crossing of the Nature Reserves of Mantet and Py.
Your arrival at the thermal station at Vernet-les-Bains at the foot of the renowned Mont Canigou will be a proud and rewarding achievement for you after your long, hard journey evoking strong emotions and feelings beneath the heat of the Catalan sun.
Program
Day 1: Starting with your stay at Merens les Vals
Settling into your accommodation at Merens les Vals. Depending upon the time you arrive there may be a chance of a walk.
From Merens les Vals towards the Col de Joux, depart and return. This mountain pass has a very interesting belvedere (viewpoint) over the close summits of the Orgeix Valley and the mountain massive of Rulhe.
Distance: 11km, duration 4h. Ascent 600m descent -600m.
Day 2. From Merens les Vals to the guardian kept refuge of Besines.
The GR10 progressively leaves the Haute-Ariege as it approaches Capcir with a short respite in a classic deep Pyrenean Valley whilst passing through the mountain pass. Starting from Merens, climbing to the Porteille des Besines at an altitude of 2333m of altitude is reached, before a descent towards the Etang des Besines and its guardian kept refuge. From the refuge terrace the view towards the lake and the nearby Pic Pedros is stunning.
Distance: 10km. duration: 5h30, ascent +1273m descent: -229.
Day 3. From the refuge of Besines to the Lake of Bouillouses.
From the Refuge of Besines, the itinery crosses the pass of the Coume d'Anyell altitude 2391m, before re-descending towards l'etang (pond) du Lanoux, at the bottom of Carlit. This pond or rather the lake of Lanoux is the biggest of the French Pyrenees, with a surface area of 1.1km square. During your descent to the lake of Bouillouses by the Porteille de La Grave, take the time to observe the surroundings conducive to encountering izards and wild mountain sheep.
Distance: 17km, Duration: 6h30, Ascent: +572m, Descent: -656m
Day 4. From the Lake of Bouillouses to the village of Planes.
Leaving Bouillouses a walker’s paradise, the GR10 makes its way around the mountain lakes and through national forests. During your descent in the direction of the village of Bolquere, the GR10 passes the forest of Barres and that of Bolquere. At the height of Cabanasse, a typical village of Capcir you can access Planes directly or outside the GR, continue to an old fort of Mont-Louis, of which the fortifications were attributed to Vauban.
Distance: 15km, Duration: 5h, Ascent: +28m, Descent: -513m.
Day 5. From the village of Planes to the guardian refuge of Ras de la Caranca.
The topographic profile of this stage reminds one of Russian mountains, knowing that a descent often corresponds to mountain pass or high plateau to get over. Today the Pal de Cedillas (1911m) and above all the Col Mata (2367m) with a remarkable belvedere (viewpoint) in the direction of Cancer and the emblematic Pick due Carlit are on our programme for today, with a particular atmosphere readily awakened by the proximity/French Catalonians (mountains).
Distance 13km, Duration: 6h30, Ascent: +1058m, Descent: -762m.
Day 6. From the guardian refuge of Raps de la Caracas to the hamlet of Py
To approach the Pays de Conflent the GR10 crosses the nature reserve of Mantet then that of Py, with a passage through the Col del Pal (2294m) and the Col de Mantes (1761m). Your efforts are rewarded by a multitude of emotions and pleasures by the mountain flowers, and the cultural discoveries of the roman churches of Saint Vincent at Mantes or Saint Paul’s at Py (XI century).
Distance: 16km, Duration: 6h15, Ascent: +848m, Descent: -1646m.
Day 7. From the hamlet of Py to Vernet-les-Bains.
This stage leads us to the foot of the famous Canigou Massive the emblematic mountain of the Pyrenees Orientales and all the Catalan mountains. Although being covered with snow until the end of the spring and only 50km from the sea, it is nicknamed the 'Fujiyama Catalan', and was considered the highest mountain in the Pyrenees until the 18th century. It's for this reason we felt a need for its incorporation in our walking agenda.
Distance 8.5km, Duration: 3h, Ascent: +195m, Descent: -579m
The programme has been established according to the latest information at the time of editing: the unexpected is always possible and certain situations out of our control may mean modifying the route.
Level: Moderate. Walking on good footpaths, but nevertheless necessary to be in good physical shape!

Lodging.
Half-board lodging is in communal dormitories, in stopover gites (days 1, 3 and 4) and guardian mountain refuges (days 2 and 5) and half board in guest rooms (day 6) with 2 people per room. Bring a sleeping bag liner.

Continental breakfast (Tea, coffee, milk, bread, jam) Evening meals are often based on local specialities and includes a starter, main meal and dessert.
Picnics are not included but can be bought before leaving. Drinks are also not included.
Start/end.
Start day 1 from your accommodation at Merens les Vals (09).
On completion of the 6th part of the GR10 with the intention to do the 7th part, the night at Merens is free of charge.
End. Day 7 at Vermet-les-Bains (66) after your walk.

Mountain weather is notoriously fickle, and the Pyrénées is no exception. However, on average, the range enjoys 300 days and 2,000 hours of sunshine a year making it one of the sunniest regions in France. At the western end, the Atlantic is a major influence, pushing cool, moisture-laden air streams far inland, making the Basque country one of the wettest regions in France. However, the bad weather from the west often fades out before reaching the central Pyrénées. At the other extreme, the high-pressure systems of the Mediterranean give long spells of rain-free weeks in summer, making the Eastern Pyrénées one of the driest regions in France.
Spring
Arrives early and quickly feels like the summer. This is a favourite season for cyclists and walkers. Between early April and the end of June, the maximum average temperatures are between 16 and 24°C. Any rain tends to occur during the night and early morning, clearing by midmorning. There is still snow on the peaks.
Summer
Tends to be hot with intense sunshine. During the day, maximum temperatures reach on average between 26 and 28°C, but the night air is pleasantly cool. Minimum average temperatures are quite high, approximately 14°C in the early morning. Thunderstorms tend to occur during the evening but pass quickly, ensuring the countryside remains green and helps to clear the air.
Autumn
Often enjoys the warmth of an Indian summer, with beautiful blue skies. Maximum temperatures range between 21 and 25°C.
Winter
We rarely get snow at our altitude - in the lower valleys. However, there are several ski resorts nearby should you want snow. It is important to note that at any time of year, across the entire mountain range, a rise in elevation of 200m can mean a fall in temperature of around 1°C - even in summer!

Most of your accommodation will be in gites along the GR-10.
So what is a gite?
A gite is a French holiday home that is available for rent. Gites are usually fully furnished and equipped for self-catering. Gites are generally old farm workers’ cottages or converted outbuildings and barns within the proximity of the owner’s principle residence. The original term Gite means quite simply a form of shelter. Gites today vary from being luxury holiday homes to very basic apartments. Although there are many types of gites, what you should encounter on your vacation is most likely the gite d’etape, a stopover and holiday getaway off the beaten track for groups of walkers or cyclists.
Lodging is usually in dormitory style rooms. On some trips some days can be upgraded to more private rooms.
The trips are mostly with breakfast and dinner - except on Day 1. Please consult the itinerary.
They will need sleeping bag liners (or sheet or similar) in the gites - no sleeping bag is needed
