Pollino National Park and Maratea Coast
Basilicata
Italy
Your trip begins in Pollino National Park in southern Italy. Comprised within the provinces of Cosenza, Matera and Potenza, the park is the largest in the country and stretches over 1820 km. It takes its name from its highest peak, the Pollino Massif. Founded in 1992, the park includes both natural and archaeological points of interest. The symbol of Pollino National Park is the Bosnian Pine, as this park is one of last places this species can be found in Italy.
Along the way you traverse mainly mountain territory, which is comprised of three main mountain systems. The highest peaks of the park include Serra Dolcedorme (2,267m), Mt. Pollino (2,248m), Serra del Prete (2,181m), Serra delle Ciavole (2,127m), and Serra di Crispo (2,053m).
Animals and humans both inhabit the park, as it is home to both villages and great expanses of nature. Throughout your journey keep a keen eye out for the Gold Eagle, the Apennine Wold, the Roe Deer, the Black Woodpecker, the Eagle Owl and the Raven.
Once you arrive at the coast, take the time to appreciate the coastal beauty of Maratea, located on the Tyrrenian Coast. This coast is a 30 km stretch that breaks out from the verdant landscape of Pollino National Park. The Tyrrenian Coast has yet to be discovered by major tourist markets and its sight can only be described as a small corner of paradise. Surrounded by mountains and a mantel of wood, Maratea’s natural surroundings provide a stunning backdrop to a town also rich in history and culture. Uncontaminated nature, intense light and panoramas will leave you with enchanting memories of this exploration of Basilicata on foot.

Light walk around the village, dinner and overnight stay. Day 2 Serra di Crispo Excursion in the “heart” of the Pollino Park. You will follow a path through the forest along the abandoned “Rueping.” This is an Austrian railway line that was used, in the 19th century, to transport trains carrying tree trunks. After passing a little lake called "Lago Fondo" you will reach Pietra Castello (1750 m.) where you will see the first Loricato (Bosnian) Pines. From here you go up to the Grande Porta del Pollino (the Great Door) at 1958 m., to the Serra di Crispo summit (mt. 2056) known as the “Garden of Gods”. Back to the farmhouse, dinner and overnight stay. 6.5 h. Length: 12 km. Grade: moderate to high Height difference: 678 m. Day 3 Pollino Patriarchs Today you will reach the peak of Monte Pollino, the second highest summit in the Park. You cross a beech tree area with a view of the rocky shore full of Bosnian Pines. Here it is possible to see Eagles and the Pilgrim Hawke. Back to the Hotel, dinner and overnight stay. 6.5 h. Length: 14 km. Grade: moderate/high Height difference: 771 m Day 4 Tyrrhenian Coast: Maratea Transfer to Maratea and get settled in at your Hotel. Self guided excursion to the San Biagio Mount and the Redeemer statue, with a breathtaking panorama of the cliffs and coves along the coast. You descend on foot into the countryside along a paved path to visit the historic centre. Free time to enjoy the beautiful centre of Maratea. Overnight stay. 3 h. Grade: easy Day 5 Black Beach Easy excursion moving from the historic centre alleyways. Walking on the west side of San Biagio Mountain you will see the contrast between the green and blue of the sea, with a nice view from the Policastro gulf to the Cirella island in Calabria. The route follows an old path linking different little churches and chapels among which is an important one called Madonna della Pietà. The final destinations of this route are the Maratea Caves and the famous “Spiaggia Nera” (the Black Beach) where the volcanic black sand fades into the the dark blue of the sea. 3 h. Grade: easy Day 6 Rest Day or 'flying' on Trecchina Today you can have a Rest, having a swim in the blue sea in one of the Maratea beaches, or walking starting from the nearby village of Trecchina. From the main square with the leaning tower of the church, continue along the street lined with Liberty-style houses , that brings you to the beautiful Forraina Chapel. From here you will follow the path that pilgrims, carrying the statue of the Virgin Mary to the Sanctuary, walk along every year. From the top you will see the Noce river valley, the Tyrrhenian sea, Mount Sirino and Pollino. Back to the village on the same path. Return to Maratea. Overnight stay. 4 h. Grade: easy Day 7 End of trip The trip ends after breakfast
