Introduction
Southern Spain Spain

Discover places of hidden beauty in a spirit of fun and adventure in Southern Spain. Immerse yourself in the exciting and varied trail riding of the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada.  Journey from village to village through spectacular mountain scenery, gentle river valleys, deep forests and open grassland.  The professional guides are friendly and make for a relaxing and warm holiday, complete with great hotels, delicious food and wine, and of course the beautiful and well-cared for horses.  On the southern side of the Sierra Nevada, facing the Mediterranean, is an idyllic collection of dramatic peaks and hanging valleys. The rural lifestyle continues as it has done for hundreds of years with the cultivation of almonds, figs and grapes for the local wine. Mules and drought animals are still used to plough the fields and for transport, as many of the farms and vineyards are inaccessible by car. The scenery and vegetation changes with the altitude, allowing us to ride through an ever changing landscape – from the crisp, cool air and blue skies of alpine forests to the warm balmy breezes of blossom-scented citrus groves.  There is opportunity to learn about the history of the area as you are exposed to a culture where tradition remains very much a part of every day life. The ride offers some challenging riding at all paces and is embarked upon in the spirit of fun and adventure that has made Andalusia famous the world over. Your luggage is transported to each hotel- all you need to do is relax and enjoy the ride!

Accomodation

The hotels we use on our rides are all country inn hotels - not luxurious, but traditional with a lot of personal charm. All with private bathroom facilities.

Here are some of the hotels we use on these rides:

Finca Los Llanos, Capileira

Finca Los Llanos is a rural hotel located in the town of Capileira, at an altitude of 1436 meters, it is one of the highest towns on the Iberian Peninsular - above the Poqueira River, which carries all the way to the sea
Capileira is the highest of the ancient, little, white villages that appear to cling to the mountainside as though about to slide into the Poqueira Gorge.
The hotel has 40 rooms which are equipped with a TV, fridge, telephone, hairdryer and magnifying mirror and extra towels for use at the swimming pool. Its design and architecture reflects its alpujarran setting, using local chestnut and walnut, arabic ceramics, crafted lanterns and local Alpujarran fabrics.

Swimming Pool:  The deck of the swimming pool is a great place to enjoy the spectacular views of the Poqueira Valley. 12m by 6m in dimension, the pool is open from May to mid October.
Lounge:  The lounge has a library where you will find information about the alpujarras, its history, culture and traditions….
The ‘Sotillo Viejo’ Terrace:  Located above the swimming pool, shaded by walnut trees, the ‘sotillo viejo’ terrace (the terrace of the little old grove) is the ideal place to relax outdoors all year round.
During high season you will also be able to enjoy refreshments from the bar.
Restaurant:  With a capacity for 150 people our restaurant offers a buffet service* and a broad ‘a la carte’ menu, serving many dishes typical of the region.

Alquería de Morayma, Cádiar
The Alquera de Morayma is a small rural tourist complex which reflects the very best of Apujarreo style and design. Ideally situated on the flanks of the Contraviesa hills close to the riverbank of the Guadalfeo in the Granada Alpujarra, guests can enjoy wonderful views of the high mountains in the nearby Sierra Nevada National Park. Nestling in the center of recently re-forested farmland comprising organically cultivated almonds, vines, figs, olives and various fruit trees - the Alquera is an oasis of water and shade in the summer months. In the nearby home farm there is excellent stabling, hen houses, a dovecote, and delightful kitchen gardens.
Mariano Cruz, the manager, is deeply committed to the Alpujarra, it's people and their way of life. He hopes those who stay at the Alquera will leave with a greater understanding and appreciation of some of the traditions of life in the high mountain villages. All the buildings have been cleverly reconstructed in the old manner, using local materials and expertise, and have been built on many different levels to create the asymmetrical feel of a local village. The flat roofs are covered with launa (mica schist) and have authentic slate eaves, and irregular chimney stacks. Inside, the ceilings are traditional slate supported by uncovered chestnut beams; casement windows look out onto terraces, patios, covered walkways, in one case a bread oven, fountains and gardens. Furnishing are typically Apujarreo.

There is even a bodega (wine cellar), an ermita (old chapel) in which one can stay, and a very well stocked library, with a wealth of local material. In it's second year the Alquera won the Junta de Andalucia's first prize for innovation in rural tourism and is recommended in the Spanish national newspaper EL Pais' Where to Stay' list.

La Marmita de Ahlam, Benecid

El Cercado, Berchules
El Cercado, located in open countryside and commanding magnificent views towards the south, has a swimming pool, a bar-restaurant (rated at 3 Forks) which offers a wide range of local dishes and spacious function rooms. For a small charge you can use the spa facilities. Nearby is the picturesque village of Bérchules, so typical of the region with its white houses clinging to the mountain sides, where the unique´New Year in August´ is celebrated each year.

La Fragua, Trevélez
The hotel and restaurant La Fragua are situated in the village of Trevelez, at the highest point of the Alpujarra. The village is known for its excellent hams, its beautiful countryside, and its strategic location within the region and for being the highest village in Spain. There are various leisure activities on offer to suit all tastes. Further more; if you are wish to learn more about the Alpujarra and the beautiful areas of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, Trevélez is your starting point. There is also a restaurant where you can taste the typical cuisine of the Alpujarra and the tasty and famous Mediterranean diet.

El Refugio de Nevada, Laroles
Refuge Hostal Nevada is a family of small size, ideal for taking it as a base for their visit to the Alpujarras. Has twelve cozy rooms, seven of them are equipped with bathroom, fireplace, refrigerator and a small seating area, reception with bar and terrace with magnificent views. An entertaining and charming man who is fluent in Spanish, French and English, he will ensure you enjoy a wonderful riding holiday.

The region
The Alpujarras are located to the south of the Sierra Nevada massif, in a Natural Park and with views over the Mediterranean. With their dramatic scenery and wild flora and fauna, they were declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986.
