Cycling in Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire’s contrasting terrain is criss-crossed by an extensive network of quite country lanes, making it a great destination for cyclists of all abilities. There are also opportunities to enjoy traffic-free rides through some of the county’s spectacular scenery on both surfaced and un-surfaced tracks.
Choose to cycle the windswept moorlands and high peaks of the Preseli Hills, which are purported to be the cources for the Stonehenge bluestones, and are today dotted with the studios of artists and crafts people who draw inspiration from the area's natural landscape and numerous Neolithic monuments. Or explore gentler routes that lead to picturesque villages, quiet stretches of inland waterway, colourful fishing harbours and fine sandy beaches.

The Celtic Trail, part of the National Cycle Network, covers 220 miles of magnificent landscape across South and West Wales. You’ll pick up this section of the trail in Saundersfoot, and travel through several of the pretty resort village of the south coast. Explore the cobbled streets in the medieval walled town of Tenby, before continuing to Pembroke, where one of the finest examples of a Norman Castle in the United Kingdom towers over the attractive millpond, dotted with swans. The Cleddau Bridge spans the bustling Milford Haven Waterway, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, where pretty boats and endless sky reflect in the water below you.

Itinerary

On the traffic free Brunel Way you’ll embrace the solitude of open countryside, before entering the bustling county town of Haverfordwest, where you’re never more than a few blocks from a hearty pub meal. Heading west towards the craggy coast, Broad Haven marks the trail’s northward turn, and you’re greeted by endless sea and sky along beautiful St Brides Bay, to the smallest city in Britain, St Davids, with its imposing Cathedral and Bishops Palace. The route continues along the north coast to Fishguard, before heading inland through the lush and lovely Gwaun Valley, to Newport.
