Tibetan Highlands Horse Trek

This is a ride back in time, on top of the world, on the high plateau of eastern Tibet. At 11,000 feet above sea level, the grasslands of northern Kham on the border of Gansu Province are home to the "black tent" herders; Tibetans who graze their yaks, horses, and sheep on the lush rolling hills. In the distance, the riding area is surrounded by the snow covered peaks of the Min Shan and Anye Machin range. Traveling with nomads whose life and culture are largely unchanged in the last 1000 years, our ride takes us along the great divide between the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. In July, the weather is warm following seasonal rains and the wildflowers explode. In the company of our Khampa "wranglers", we'll visit nomad families, small hamlets and Buddhist temples.
When traveling in the countryside we are camping out, packing all our food and camping gear on pack horses. All clients are expected to put up their own tents (provided) and to assist standing night watch in certain areas where the possibility of horse theft is high. We take advantage of local guesthouses and the opportunity to clean up and sleep in a bed. One of the many unique aspects of this ride is the opportunity to visit remote temples and gain insight into the enduring nature of Tibetan Buddhism. Our US guides are very experienced with this area and have developed an extraordinary rapport with the local nomads after 10 years of riding trips. Your trip leaders (American and Chinese) speak the local dialect as well as being experienced riders and out- doors people.
