Magic of the Far South

Magic of the Far South
Morocco Morocco

Magic of the Far South takes you on an exploration of Morocco’s Ziz Valley. This valley was once part of an ancient caravan route that carried travelers from the deserts to the Mediterranean Sea. This particular wadi stands in stark contrast to the typical surrounding desert as  palm and date trees surprisingly decorate the rock and sand landscape. In this area, we are likely to see men tending their fields and donkeys transporting goods. There are ruins of old fortresses, ksars, among other ancient structures in this area we can discover. In addition to the lush valley of Ziz, we then experience the contrast of the classic dry desert as we travel through sand dune, after sand dune, and pink and gold sand sculptures. The red sun illuminates the vastness of the desert sky and it is under this sky where we camp as explorers in centuries past.
The ride begins in Erfoud, a small city of a less than 10,000 populace, and we depart from there into lush palm plantations and pass green oases’ landscapes. Once we travel through the greenery we come to the desert, where it’s possible to spot pink flamingoes. We will enjoy traditional Méchoui cooking, a North African cuisine defined by a whole sheep or lamb on a spit, accompanied by a roaring campfire, musicians and delightful sunsets. We continue onto the Todra Gorge, on the east side of the High Atlas Mountains. The carved out cliff-sided canyons, up to 160 meters high, are spectacular and narrow to as little as 10 meters at their smallest width. There is the tiniest glacier stream; the waters that once filled the gorge can only be left to the imagination. Along the way we will encounter local people with their donkeys and camels. Our riding journey concludes in Ourzazate, where we will have just enough time for a luxurious, well-deserved massage before our farewell dinner. This trip offers a day of relaxation with the options of visiting sand dunes on foot, camel or horseback. Three nights of this tour are spent in hotels; four are deluxe camps under the stars.
