Family Goes to Camp: Expedition Style
The Desolation and Gray Canyons of the Green River offers the opportunity for the whole family to go to "camp." This trip has exceptional bonding opportunities, fun whitewater, enchanting camp sites on sandy beaches, stunning geological features, ancient Native American as well as recent western history ~ and it all begins with a scenic flight to the launch site!
This stretch of the Green River is 84 miles of river with 50+ class I-III rapids that start the second day of the trip and build each day until the largest and best rapids on the last day. These rapids are full of big rolling waves, not technically difficult but exciting and great fun.
This moderate river trip is delightful for every family member. We run this trip in both oarboats and inflatable kayaks. The Family Goes to Camp trip illustrates some of the world's finest wilderness areas, in comfort, with great food, and some of the finest people you will ever meet.
River rafting offers quality time and experiences for strengthening family relationships. There is adventure time, quiet time, interaction and reflection time, and lots of time to play. Hiking to outlaw cabins, water fights, and building sandcastles are just some of quality interaction.
The "Kids Guide" takes children on structured, educational and fun outings where everyone can interact with nature, and each other. Parents can join in the excursions or take this time to enjoy a leisure walk, relaxing next to the river, or the camaraderie of other guests. Our Family-Only guides have special family and educational training. They've developed great outdoor educational and environmentally sensitive activities and games. These activities and games incorporate camping, history, geology, wildlife, plant life, and of course FUN.
The Green River through Desolation and Gray Canyons is the only river canyons registered as a National Historic Landmark. The Fremont Indians farmed, hunted and lived here over 700 years ago and left ruins and ancient rock art. The most popular stop is McPherson Cabin where Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid and "The Wild Bunch," hide out. Time is set aside to explore these homes and legends.

Orientation
We hold a pre-trip orientation the evening before the trip launches. Here you will meet one of your guides, sign your release forms, receive your dry bags (river luggage), learn what to expect and how to prepare, and ask questions. The orientation is held at our office in Moab
Day 1: We meet early at the Moab Canyonlands Airport for a spectacular scenic flight to a mesa above the river. You will then spend the day leisurely rafting. For lunch, your guides prepare a fresh buffet on the riverbank. This evening, your family will be hiking, playing games, and enjoying a delicious dinner in a enchanting riverside beach camp.
Days 2, 3 & 4: For the next few days you will learn to paddle a raft, enjoy great hikes, play in the river and learn a lot about nature and history. Time is set aside for nature programs, building sandcastles and playing along the riverbank. The rapids increase in size each day and occur in faster succession. The crew prepares all meals ending with a marshmallow roast over the campfire.
Last Day: All your paddling skills are exercised today as you enjoy the biggest rapids of the trip. The journey ends with celebrations as we return to Moab.
Whitewater
The Green River though Desolation and Gray Canyons is 84 miles of 50 class I-III rapids that start the second day of the trip and build each day until the largest and best rapids the last day. These rapids are full of big rolling waves, not technically difficult but exciting and great fun - perfect for learning to maneuver a paddleboat or kayak.
The Rafts
All of our equipment is top quality, state of the art and carefully maintained and serviced. Our Family trips are run with paddleboats, oarboats and a few inflatable kayaks to play in. The equipment raft may have a small outboard motor for low water conditions and to accommodate kids' routines. (Rental kayaks are available for your family’s exclusive use.)
Camping & Hiking
Those new to the river and first-time campers are encouraged to join us. There is one guide for every 5 guests enhancing personal interaction throughout the trip. We bring everything we need and set up a new camp and kitchen each evening. Our crews organize each campsite, prepare all meals, and arrange fascinating and entertaining activities. The tastes of adults and children are taken into consideration, with steak for some and hamburger for others. Your time is spent playing, interacting, and relaxing – as a family.
Each day, clean air amplifies a vibrant blue sky, creating a perfect environment for unparalleled photographic opportunities. As evening yields to night and the sun melts from the sky, it is replaced by a vivid star show enhancing the evolving conversations among the guests.
Group Size
We believe in protecting the environment and enhancing your vacation. This is why we rarely do trips larger than 25 people. Most of our trips are 10-15 people in size. On our multi-day trips there will never be more than 5 guests on each oarboat. With small groups you will get the attention you deserve and the chance to know all the guides and other guests.
Our Guides
Our guides are professional, exceptional people with outstanding talents, who are eager to share their knowledge, experience, and enjoyment of life in the outdoors. They continually strive to perfect their understanding of our wilderness and its secrets. This is their way of life, and their passion is to share this adventurous way of life with you.
Our guides’ objective is to help you have fun. However, you can rest assured that your safety is their top priority and you will observe this in their behavior as well as their expectations of you. They are Red Cross First Aid and CPR certified, and have completed river rescue training. They are required to complete hours of training on each river stretch before they can “guide” our guests. If you are like most people, you will marvel at the quality of their work, while feeling as if you have just made a new friend.
Geology
The Green River has sliced through 300 million years of rock leaving exposed layers in towering canyon walls, giving the area a spectacular Grand Canyon appearance. Guides share their geologic expertise during hikes through the canyons.
History
The Green River through Desolation Canyon is the only river canyon registered as a National Historic Landmark. The Fremont Indians farmed, hunted and lived here over 700 years ago and left ruins and ancient rock art. In the late 1800's homesteaders, trappers and outlaws shared the area. The McPherson’s befriended Butch Cassidy and his “Wild Bunch,” and their ranch still exists. Time is set aside to explore these ranches and legends.
Today, ranchers and cowboys along the canyon claim to be ancestors of these infamous residents. The river borders the Uinta and Ouray Indian reservations, where they farm and ranch today.
Wildlife
Wildlife is abundant in this region, though often shy. During the heat of the day lizards sun themselves while eagles, vultures and hawks soar on thermal airstreams along the canyon walls. In the morning and evening, deer, muskrat, beaver, coyote and the great blue heron move along the river's edge. Although too warm for trout, the Green River supports catfish and the endangered Colorado Squawfish and Humpback Chub.
