Coast
Peru
Join us on a coastal ride exploring the ancient sites and old traditions of the Peruvian peoples. Supported by two horse breeders (members of the National Association of Peruvian Paso Breeders) and the archeologist Vancessa Tineroff Gil, this trip was established to help local development projects in the area. It is a true adventure exploring the vast wilderness of coastal Peru from Ica to Nazca - ending with a sightseeing flight over the world famous Nazca Lines.
This route leads you to the cradle of the ancient civilizations of Paracas and Nazca. Traveling between forests and desert pampas, from fertile valleys to the Pacific Ocean – you will be in the heart of ancestral cultures. You will be amazed by its wonderful landscape and discover a universe full of archaeological treasures including the famous Nazca lines.
During your 7 day trip, you will ride along a unique route from Ocucaje to Cahuachi, the biggest adobe brick site of the South Coast. The best ranches in the region will match you up with a beautiful gaited Peruvian Paso horse to make your trip the most compfortable ride you have ever had.
This diversified route will allow you to be totally immersed in the authentic Peruvian culture and share in its traditions.
View fossils dating back millions of years on this adventurous & unique tour. Visit the South Coast’s largest ceremonial center built of adobe bricks and feast on a Pachamanca, a typical Inca meal. One evening you will witness a traditional Chalan including one Marinera (Peruvian Paso horse dance).
• Tour is designed following the principle of solidarity-oriented tourism with the aim of supporting local sustainable development projects

DAY 1. Ica 1 to 2 hour ride
An optional transfer will pick you up in Lima at 7 AM. You will meet your guide in Ica (400 km south of Lima) and head to the hacienda. You spend the day at the Criadero where you have the opportunity to become familiar with the horses. The whole day, which includes a Pachamanca (traditional Inca meal) and a Marinera (Peruvian Paso horse dance), is dedicated to the Peruvian Paso horse and its tradition. You learn how to harness your horses according to ancestral custom. You can ride stallions, mares and geldings in order for you to find the horse that best fits your level and personality. Professional ¨chalanes¨ (trainers) will have the pleasure to introduce you to the Peruvian horsemanship. Your first night is spent in a hotel.
DAY 2. Callango - Chiquerillo 5 to 6 hour ride
After breakfast we leave for our first day ride following the Ica valley southwards. After crossing the Chiquerillo Canyon and its amazing array of colorful sand, we arrive at La Bruja Hill to discover Miocene - gigantic vertebrate fossils that are over 12 million years old. Off the beaten path of typical tours, these paleontological treasures stand out on the remote hills of the pampa. After the visit, we spend the night camping.
DAY 3. Callango – Samaca Chico 5 to 6 hour ride
After breakfast, we spend the day riding down to Ullujaya/Samaca Chico along the Ica River, through wonderful pampas and majestic mountains. We spend the night camping in a oasis near Samaca Chico.
DAY 4. Samaca Chico - Boca del Río 3 to 4 hour ride
We ride from Samaca Chico to Boca del Río, where the Ica River, coming from the Andes Cordillera, empties into the Pacific Ocean. After riding through huarangos, espinos and other coastal trees, we reach a long, wide beach which is an ecological nest to thousands of sea birds. Spend the afternoon enjoying the beach and its diversified fauna before heading to camp for the night.
DAY 5. Boca del Rio - Montegrande 5 to 6 hour ride
After breakfast, we ride along 10 km of golden dune beach until Puerto Caballa, a fishermen village and old harbor. Once we leave the ocean behind and pass over high pampas, we arrive at a stunning cliff lookout, overhanging the lush valley of the Rio Grande where we spend the night.
DAY 6. Montegrande - Coyungo 4 to 5 hour ride
We travel northeast of the Rio Grande Valley to enter the depths of a huge canyon, surrounded by multicolor rocks. After lunch, we follow the river along old Inca, Paracas, and Nazca cemeteries until we reach Coyungo, where the camp will be settled.
DAY 7. Coyungo - Cahuachi - Nazca 6 to 7 hour ride
In the morning, we reach the Rio Nazca Valley, one of the Rio Grande basin’s ten tributaries. This is also the territory of ancient Nazca civilization. We follow an ancient Incan path that crosses the mountains, linking the valley to the sea. This historic path was used by the chaskis (Inca empire messengers). We ride along Nazca Valley, amongst its chacras, pampas, huarango forests (coastal tree) and notorious lines until we get to Cahuachi. Cahuachi is Nazca´s great ceremonial site, the biggest in the Southern Coast built entirely with mud bricks.
Thanks to the ongoing excavation project, you can enjoy the restored Great Pyramid and if the timing is right, you may have the chance to see archeologists at work. After the visit, we join the camp where we leave the horses. You are then transferred to Nazca where we spend the night in the hotel.
DAY 8. Nazca
After breakfast, you fly over the notorious Nazca lines, which UNESCO named a World Heritage site. Here we have our last lunch before ending the trip.
Optional transfer back to Lima.

The climate of the South Coast is desert sub tropical: hot and dry with temperatures between 18C and 33C from December to March, and between 10C and 26C with mist and light rains from April to November, mainly in the Ica Valley and the littoral. Because of the distance to the ocean, Rio Grande, Nasca and Palpa valleys are hotter. Generally speaking, mornings and nights are quite cool (from 8 to 15C) and afternoons rather hot (from 20 to 30C). Each valley has its own climate; the humidity being higher closer to the ocean and the heat more intense inland. Because of the difference between day and night temperatures, we recommend you take: - an anorak, a warm jacket for the evening and one or two polar jumpers; - a good sleeping bag, those indicating -10C resistant are fine; - a hat with a thin cord, sunglasses and sun screen; - a pair of jeans with small stitches and leather boots or half-chaps to ride; - Cotton made clothes and underwear; - walking shoes; To be avoided: clothes made out of lycra or any kind of material that makes you sweat, tight jeans, city shoes and classic horse riding shoes or boots. In Peru, it is not usual or mandatory to wear a helmet. If you want to wear a helmet, please bring your own. To protect your photographic material or any other electrical device from the sand, we recommend you to use plastic bags (the ones used to keep food in the freezer are fine).
* No vaccination is mandatory in Peru. For this particular region though, DT Polio, Hepatitis B and Tetanus are recommended.
