Colca Valley to the origin of the Amazon River
Arequipa
Peru
An extraordinary riding adventure exploring the Colca Valley and riding all the way to the origins of the Amazon River. Or you can combine the Colca with 4 riding days across the desert on high level Peruvian Paso horses. The scenery is spectacular and ever changing. Join us on this new Peruvian adventure with accommodations in 3 and 4 star hotels and some overnight camping options.
Ride the smooth gaited Peruvian Pasos and learn more about the history and culture while exploring the countryside. Meet the local people and one of the premier horse breeders in Peru. Our trip starts in the historic town of Arequipa. From here we transfer to the Colca Valley - on the way you surely will encounter the South American “camels” (Alpacas, Llamas and Vicuñas). Later we see the magnificent volcanoes Belvedere. Get to know your Paruvian Paso horse and off we ride to the Coporaque Village and explore the archaeological site of Uyo-Uyo. The next days we follow the Colca River, see Pre-Inca “Terrazas”, wonderful crops carved in the mountains (Inca way of plantation) and cross the Villages of Ichupampa, Lari and Madrigal, where our staff will set up our comfortable camp on a natural belvedere close to the copper mine of Madrigal. In the afternoon, we will climb the Mountain, before we reach the “Chimpa” fortress. Then our trail leads us to the village of Pinchollo, where we will leave the horses to visit the two most famous Belvederes of the Valley (the Cross of Condor and the Cross of Cura), located at the edge of the second deepest canyon in the world (10,725 feet deep).
Enjoy the view of the Peruvian condor high above the canyon, one of the biggest birds on the globe. The next stop is the Geyser of Pinchollo. On the way we pass through amazing landscapes composed by high volcanoes with snowy peaks, waterfalls and huge mountains. Finally we transfer to the village of
Tuti and ride way up to
the volcano Mismi (16,732 feet). On the way, we will enjoy
the outstanding panorama and the antique pre-Hispanic ruins. After 25 km
of ascent, we will reach one of the origins of the Amazon, recognized in 2001
as the longest river in the world, with a distance of 6 800 km.
Desert Extension Option:
There is an optional extension that will take us back to Arequipa and onto La Joya for a 4 day desert crossing on high level Peruvian Paso horses supplied by a well known local breeder. His horses are champions in Arequipa Contests of
Peruvian Paso. We will ride between the crops of corn,
cotton and fruits, until we cross the Vitor River to
reach a Bodega called “Hacienda del Abuelo”, where they produce traditional Pisco Arequipeño. Then we will arrive at the
“Zentero” farm, where we will set up the camp. The next day we will
cross the Vitor Valley again to reach the other side by a small rough trail, which will lead us to the base of the mountain. The next day we will experience
the most amazing landscape ever, composed by huge mountains of sand and
Sillar (volcanic white stone).
It's a surreal panorama which will stay in our memory
forever! Finally, we will reach “the Quisguarani Valley”, in the middle
of nowhere, composed by green plants. It’s the perfect microclimate to
camp. On our last riding day we will
keep crossing the dunes towards Arequipa and we will feel the amazing heat coming from the ground in this beautiful arid landscape with amazing views of the chain of volcanoes.

The Horse in Peru
It represents the history of the Spanish colonization in America, with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in Caribe. The Spanish brought the better horses to the peninsula, and these horses spreads themselves in the American continent, and Peru becomes the main center of horse breeders in America, because it was the most powerful and rich of all the Spanish possession at international level.
Origins
The predecessor of this breed was boarded in Sevilla, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Cádiz at the XVI century, and is logical to assume that it belongs to the andaluz breed.
The Peruvian Paso Horse
Considered as unique in its kind, because of its anatomic body formation and peculiar shape, The Peruvian Paso Horse belongs to the rich cultural and national collection, and it is known everywhere in the world. Its existence was denominated as the biggest triumph of the genetic selection, never reached by any group of breeders. It is synonymous of nobility and loyalty, and it brings in its monumental shape a bunch of virtues, like to be one of the most attractive manifestations of tradition and purity. The Peruvian Paso Horse was declared as Cultural Heritage and got in its genetic evolution a special quality called "Paso Llano", which is a kind of lateral motion; a walking-type alternative and smooth, in which its center of gravity doesn’t change at all and provides a not shaken ride. Its genetic basis is the product of 400 years of selection, crossbreeding and blood typing, elements that are found only in Peru.
Features
The Peruvian Horse has a light contexture and medium size. Its body resistance is natural and helps in its daily activities and efforts. The better horses show their proud lineage in US, Canada, Italy, German, all the United Kingdom, Australia and even Japan.
The “Chalán”
The “chalán” (Peruvian horseman), who rides the Peruvian Paso Horse is dressed with: Straw hat, shirt and pants both white, brown poncho made with vicuña fiber, bandana, boots and spurs. The amazon rides with an adaptation of the Chalanes dressing. Their clothes consist in: Short-brimmed straw hat, pearl color embroidered shirt, brown scarf made with vicuña fiber and pearl color bell-bottom pants, which waves with the wind giving to the amazon a touch of sensuality.
The tack of the Peruvian Paso Horse
Consists in:
•Halter
•Bridle
•Head ornament
•Braided leather reins
•Leather eyepatch
•Peruvian Paso saddle
•Leather tail ornament
•Stirrup made with wood and ornamented with silver
Passport and Visa Requirements:
Valid passport required by all nationals referred to in the chart above. Not required by all nationals referred to in the chart above, travelling as tourists for stays of up to 90 days, except: 1. nati. more
The weather during the rides:
Colca Valley is usually sunny during the day, with temperatures which can reach 30°C degrees, but also can go under 0°C degrees during the camp overnight (especially in July and August). The hotels that we use are at least 3 stars superior have on hot water and heater. For the camp, close to the copper mine of Madrigal, we recommend you to bring mountain Sleeping Bag (consult us for rental if you don’t have one).
The Desert of “La Joya” is sunny during the entire year and can reach temperatures of 38°C degrees during the day. We only camp in locations where the micro climate allows comfortable nights with not less than 18°C degrees. During the desert rides may occur strong winds, and that’s why we recommend to use a “bandana” to protect your mouth and nose.
Climate in the Colca Canyon...
Though sunny during the day, it can also get quite cold at night -- which is not unexpected, since Chivay is higher than Cusco!
The
Colca Valley is lush and green after the heaviest rains from January to
March, but most of the rest of the year it is arid and dusty.
In
the dry season (mid April to mid November) temperatures usually fall to
below zero at night and reach 15-20°C during the daytime.
During
the rainy season (end of December to end of February) the changes in
temperature are less dramatic as the overcast sky impedes the
penetration of the sun’s rays and the heating of the atmosphere during
the day and the frost and cold at night. Temperatures vary between the 5° and 10°C.
Walking shoes, flashlight or
head lamp, sandals, personal medicines, sleeping bag (can be provided at
extra cost), waterproof raincoat, sun glasses, sun block and repellent,
swimwear and change of clothes, towels.
