Sambulenni Safari

Cattle Drives

Four times a year we offer a 4-day cattle drive on a cattle farm of 6,000 hectares. The farm is a small family owned and run cattle/guest farm situated between the Swakop river and the Otjiruze river. The owner is a keen rider and sometimes joins us on the rides
The horses that we use are the same purebred Arabians or Arabian crosses that you ride during the horse safaris. They are transported from Okapuka to our friends' farm. You will be asked to help with moving cattle into different pastures, checking the condition of the herd and the level of water, reducing the risk of calves taken by leopard, removing injured animals to kraals near the farmhouse, sorting cattle into different groups, inoculating, sometimes mending of fences or whatever else is required.
We take only a few guests at the time and so the riding is tailored to the group with short half day or longer full day picnic rides available. When not riding, this is a peaceful place to unwind.

If you as a non-rider would like to join you are welcome as there are a number of other activities available, from hiking and bird and game viewing to joining the riders on their cattle work for breakfast and picnic lunch. And of course, you join the riders in the non-riding activities such as a sundowner and scenic drive.

Accommodation is in 2 spacious double en-suite rooms and 2 smaller twin en-suite room. Some of the rooms have air-conditioning. Except for the meals served in the bush meals are taken in the farmhouse. The food is home cooked with plenty

Sample Itinerary: Cattle Drive - subject to changes

These cattle drives can only be booked in combination with a full week Safaris. You can decide to arrive in Namibia, start with your cattle drive and continue with a Horse Safari or arrive and start with your safari and end with the cattle drive.
We need a min. of 2 and a max. of 6 riders to run these cattle drives.

Day 1: Arrival
We will leave the ranch at approx. 10 am so that we arrive at our destination around lunch time. After settling our horses and check-in, lunch will be waiting for us. That afternoon, we will go on our first ride getting used to the horse and checking cattle, being back at the farm house before sun sets. We might still have time to do a sundowner. Dinner is a home cooked meal by Zina, AB’s house keeper, and is ready when you are ready.

Day 2: Cattle Drive
Today, we’ll wake-up early (coffee and rusks), check our horses and saddle up. Today we are going to move cattle to different paddocks. After a few hours in the saddle, we will have worked up a hearty appetite and it’s time for us to have some brunch served in the bush. We will make sure that we’re back at the farm house during the hottest time of the day in order to have a siesta or a dip in the pool. When it is a bit cooler we drive to a neighbouring farm to see their two tame cheetahs. These cheetahs were rescued when their mother died in a bush fire. Time to go back to the house where once again Zina has cooked a perfect meal for us.

Day 3: Cattle Check & Sundowner
For our last full day we leave early morning for a game drive, have breakfast on our return and saddle up once again. Today we’re going to check on the condition of the stock and see if all the water holes are still filled; we might even encounter some game. When we return to the farm lunch will be waiting for us. Later that afternoon we jump into an open vehicle to have a scenic drive through the bush closed off with a sundowner; take a jacket as it might be chilly.

Day 4: Back to the Ranch
Once again an early rise; we want to get to the ranch as soon as possible to get our bum into the saddle once again; this time to do some game viewing.
