What to Bring for Orkney Isles Wilderness Walk


The following lists are designed to help your preparation and packing for your trip. The list is not exhaustive and, given the range of personal references, does not include all clothing that you will be required for general use, evening wear etc.

Recommended Personal Equipment

Having suitable equipment and clothing will help make your trip even more enjoyable, especially if the weather is less than perfect at any time. 
We recommend the following clothing and personal items for our Wilderness Walking holidays:
- Fully waterproof jacket such as ME Kongur Jacket*
- Waterproof trousers such as ME GTX Pant
- Leg Gaiters such as ME Glacier Gaiter
- Waterproof hill-walking boots with good ankle support, such as Scarpa ZG 65 GTX
- Small "day" rucksack (25-35 litre) such as the ME Dru
- Rucksack liner/large plastic bag for keeping items dry
- Fleece jacket such as ME Velocity Jacket
- Lightweight Trousers such as ME Approach Zip-Off Pant
- Shorts (or bring ‘zip-off’ trousers)
- Base layers such as ME Momentum T-shirt
- Warm hat & Gloves
- Thick Socks such as those by Thorlo
- Water bottle and /or Thermos flask
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Sun hat/baseball cap
- Comfortable clothes for evening wear
- Personal washkit (towels are supplied)
- Any personal medicines

Optional extras:
- Camera (plus spare film / memory card and batteries)
- Binoculars
- Insect repellent
- Ordnance Survey maps 13, 14 & 23

Group Equipment 
We will provide all necessary group equipment including first aid kit and group shelter.

PERSONAL FIRST AID KIT
The following is a list of recommended items. Although most of these items are generally available along the route, it is always more convenient to have a ready supply. This is particularly relevant to any specialist medication.
- Antiseptic cream
- Plasters, bandages, adhesive tape, zinc oxide tape
- Scissors, tweezers and safety pins
- Anti-inflammatory drugs e.g. Ibuprofen
- Analgesics e.g. Aspirin
- Anti-diaorrheal drugs: e.g. Imodium
- Antihistamines
- Re-Hydration salts or solution e.g. Dioralyte
- Throat lozenges & Dextrose glucose tablets
- Water purification tablets
- Insect Repellent
- Contact lenses and glasses (if appropriate)

Difficulty Levels Explained
1. Easy
Easy pace and an average-to-sedentary level of fitness. You should be in good health and fit enough for full day of normal sightseeing and walking.
2. Easy to Moderate
An average level of fitness or some experience with the featured activity is recommended.
3. Moderate
Requires you to have performed the featured activity regularly, with some periods on challenging terrain. Activities are mandatory and you may be traveling at high elevations. You need to be in good health and physical condition to enjoy these trips, with adequate muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance.
4. Demanding
You must be extremely physically fit and are expected to hike or ride four to six hours over steep or more rugged terrain.
5. Strenuous
Prolonged hiking/biking on moderate to difficult terrain (five to nine hours a day).
May include high altitude, rugged terrain etc..
