Lake Mburo Wildlife Horse Safari
Uganda
Uganda
Lake Mburo National Park is a very special place; every part of it is alive with variety, interest and color. It contains an extensive area of wetland and also harbors several species of mammals and birds found nowhere else in Uganda. Its sculptured landscape, with rolling hills and idyllic lake shores has a varied mosaic of habitats; forest galleries, seasonal and permanent swamps, and rich acacia-woodland, and grassy valleys which all support a wealth of wildlife. Join us on a private wilderness horse safari into this breathtaking landscape. This new trip for 2011 will explore and traverse this diverse land. Three nights are comfortable wilderness camping with the first and last night at the luxury Mihingo Lodge safari camp. At 260 km², Lake Mburo National Park is small in comparison with many other East African parks, but with its mosaic of habitats - dry hillsides, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannas, forest, lakes and swamps - it is home to a surprising diversity of plants and animals.
The Park lies between 1219 and 1828 m above sea level. High hills and
rocky, eroded ridges characterize the western part of the Park; here
deep valleys support the forest found nowhere else. in Uganda. In the eastern
sector, the rolling, wooded hills are intersected by wide, flat bottomed
valleys, which are seasonally flooded and drain into the swamps and
lakes. The Ruizi river flows in a south-easterly direction and forms
part of the western boundary of the Park. Lake Mburo and its associated
wetlands eventually drain into Lake Victoria. At the center of the Park is Lake Mburo , which together with 14 other lakes in the area forms part of a wetland system. This system is linked by a swamp some 50 km long, fed by the Ruizi river on the western side. Five lakes, of which the larges is Lake Mburo, occur within the Park's boundary. Almost a fifth of the Park's area consists of wetlands - both seasonally flooded and permanent swamps. The various types of swamps are home to a wide variety of wetland birds, and the shy, rare sitatunga antelope. Lake Mburo 's surface and its fringing vegetation are always changing, and it is delightful to explore and experience the lake's moods on our riding safari.
We recommend to combine this trip with a visit to one of the Gorilla or Chimpanzee sanctuaries that are en route to some of the most spectacular places in the West of Uganda - ask us for details.

From there via Wallow Hill Valley back to the valley south of Mihingo Lodge. Depending on the riding skills and if guests would like to do so one could reach Mihingo Lodge in time for lunch. Dinner and night at Mihingo Lodge.
Day 6: If the plan is to go back to Kampala guests can enjoy Mihingo Lodge and maybe go on a boat trip on Lake Mburo before having an early lunch and heading back to Kampala. There are also many other exciting places to explore in Uganda towards the west of Mihingo Lodge most famously the mountain gorillas, but also Queen Elisabeth National Park and Ishasha is spectacular. If guests are into hiking the Rwenzori Mountains is the best Africa has to offer.
We recommend to combine this trip with a visit to one of the Gorilla or
Chimpanzee sanctuaries that are en route to some of the most spectacular
places in the West of Uganda:
- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, about 6 hours drive, home of the famous Mountain Gorillas.
- Kibale Forest National Park, about 5 hours drive. This is the best Park in Africa to see the Chimpanzees our closest relatives.
- Queen
Elisabeth National Park , about 3 ½ hours drive, with stunning views
onto the Rwenzori Mountains, the crater lakes and the Kasinga Channel
and a very good chance of seeing lions and elephants and thousands of
Uganda Kob.
- Ishasha National Park, about 5 hours drive, famous
for its tree climbing lions and elephants. Game viewing is usually very
good here. This Park is on the way to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and is
one of the most exciting places to visit in Uganda.
