Orkney Isles Wilderness Walk
Coast
Scotland
Join us on a stunning and unforgettable journey to the Orkney Isles, a little-visited archipelago of some 70 small islands and skerries due north of the Scottish mainland. This mysterious place of long days and colourful night skies is home to a wealth of sea life and sea birds, not forgetting the remarkable flora of the islands.
The unique situation and environment of the Isles have combined to create a fascinating cultural and historical tapestry of stone circles, countless invasions and occupations, isolation and extremity, all of which have left their mark through the ages. In the company of your highly knowledgeable guide you will walk in the wildest places of Orkney, with history all around, before returning to enjoy memorable cuisine and the finest accommodation in the Isles.
Trip Highlights
• Discover wild walks, ancient landscapes and spectacularly weathered sea cliffs on the walking holiday of a lifetime
• Experience the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Orkneys in the company of our knowledgeable guides
• Enjoy the very best of local produce & cuisine at our small hotel, rated as ‘the best accommodation in Orkney’
A Typical Day
Waking up in your comfortable room, you realise how easy it is to get up when someone else is cooking a full Highland breakfast for you! Over a relaxed breakfast, served at about 8am, the guide describes the day ahead, chosen with regard to the weather from a selection of options discussed with the group the previous evening.
Our destinations are varied in terms of scenery and grade but all of our ‘Wilderness Walking’ trips include certain key elements. The chosen walk will take you into a beautiful wilderness area, where wildlife abounds. Your knowledgeable guide will be able to identify any sightings and will take time to share stories of the history, geography and geology of the area with the group, which has a maximum of 8 clients. You will be carrying only a small daypack containing your personal gear, so will finish the route feeling satisfied but not tired out.
At first glance, the Orkney Isles are mainly rural in character but our guides will introduce you to some of the wilder and remote areas such as Hoy while also introducing the incredible historical sites and spectacular coastlines.
On return to the Guest House, there will be time to freshen up with a hot shower before dinner. The chefs use locally-sourced produce to create imaginative and memorable meals, a real highlight of the holiday. After dinner we enjoy a drink, often admiring a Highland sunset before retreating to the lounge to discuss our day and the opportunities for tomorrow.
By the end of the trip, you will leave feeling that you know the area quite intimately. You will have enjoyed a range of high and low level walks, admired magnificent mountain and coastal scenery and laughed a lot during the relaxed evening meals. When the time comes to depart, we do hope that you will find yourself wondering which trip to come on next.

Important - Trip Grading
This itinerary is graded as ‘Easy’. Our "Easy" walking holidays involve straightforward hiking, following generally good trails with no major ascents. You will, however, be out walking for around 5 hours each day so you will need a reasonable level of fitness. The walks will be conducted at a leisurely pace in order to allow more time for photography, nature study and looking historical features. The underfoot terrain will usually be on paths or hill trails. However, these trails may still be muddy, or a bit rough in places, so you will need good hill-walking boots.
The daily walks will mainly be glen and coastal hikes, with some ascents of low level hills, up to around 1,500 feet / 450m high - on the islands, these hills are superb viewpoints. To help you decide if you are fit enough for this trip, ask yourself:
Can you comfortably hike for 6 miles (10km), including some ascent,
with rough ground in places? When did you last do this?
Group Size
Group size is limited to 8 as we believe this makes it easier for our guides to offer personal attention and wildlife-viewing possibilities are also enhanced.
Our groups vary widely in terms of age and walking experience and this diversity always adds to the holiday experience. We welcome anyone from the complete beginner to seasoned expert - all that is needed is a reasonable degree of fitness, plenty of enthusiasm and an appreciation of the fantastic scenery on offer!
Guides
Our Guides are some of the most highly experienced and qualified in the country. Defined by their passion for Scotland’s wild places, they have an intimate knowledge of the natural and social history of this land which they will be delighted to share.
