Catalonia Explorer Ride
Catalonia
Spain
Special Offer Available!!
Explore ¨el Corazon de Catalonia¨ - the heart of unknown Catalonia.
On the Catalonia Explorer Ride, beautiful Andalusian and Spanish-bred horses will adeptly guide you deep into the heart of enchanting Catalonia. The riding is as varied as the landscape: from open planes and meadows to deep river valleys and thick forests. Many opportunities to enjoy canters and gallops when you are not following the steep inclines on the winding forest trails. Catalonia is legendary in its ability to preserve its medieval villages in their original and charming forms. Those we encounter on this trek include Besalu, Crespia, Tortella and St. Ferriol with their Romanesque monastaries, fortified walls and stone cobbled roads, banishing vehicles in favour of horses. Here, vehicles have been banished in favor of our four-legged friends for transport, making a horseback tour the perfect way to discover this special area. Catalonia cuisine and wines from the Ampurdan region are sampled and savoured throughout the trail with a diverse range of dishes and tapas and picnics making this a gourmet experience. The Catalonia Explorer also takes you for an afternoon and night to Girona (by car), northern Catalonia’s biggest city and capital of the region, itself steeped in rich history, culture and delicious gastronomy. Along the way we traverse the immense mountains and descend to the valley of Santa Pau. At times there are chances for swimming or siestas near the large river pools in the midst of encompassing wilderness. The climax of this
week is a two-day trail which ventures alongside the river Fluvia
(important river in Catalonia) through the beautiful scenery of the
Garrotxa into the High Ampurdan region where we enjoy varied flora and
fauna and explore some very interesting villages.
With such a varied range of cuisine, landscape and adventures, a rider on the Catalonia Explorer is never hungry nor bored; come discover for yourself!
"To discover Catalonia for the first time is a great experience - to discover Catalonia on horseback is unforgettable”

Non rider rates do not include lunches or transfers between locations - need to rent a car.
Single travellers: No single supplement if willing to share.
Day 1: ARRIVAL
Transfer from Barcelona to Sant Jaume de Llerca and up a narrow winding track through thick forest and Mediterranean "jungle", perched high up on top of a ridge, we come to our destination. An 11th-century stone farm house with a commanding view over miles of forests and mountains to the snow capped peaks of the Pyrenees. Here you will meet the family, the guide, the cook and of course, the horses that are stabled here. At dinner the guide will go over the week’s program, you will be told about the special characteristics of our Andalusian trail horses. And then people can discus their riding experience and the sort of horse that they would like to ride.
Day 2: SANT FERRIOL THE NAME OF THE ROSE
Today the pace is varied. You will enjoy the canters and the pretty mountain tracks. Today’s destination is a beautiful monastery. This is from the 16th century, a jewel of Romanesque architecture built by Cistercian monks, that conjures up scenes and the spirit of the book” the Name of the Rose”. From here we have panoramic views over the Ampurdan region out to the Mediterranean coast. After a delicious picnic lunch, we will have a pleasant ride along the ridge and back to our comfortable mountain lodge.
Day 3 TO THE SADERNAS GORGE
We ride through the picturesque villages of Argelaguer and Tortella with its magnificent church dominating the village square. Now the landscape is large open stretches and we can enjoy some more long canters and gallops to Sadernas. This is the entrance to a rocky gorge, that leads high up into the Pyrenees, the beginning of one of the most famous smuggling routes between Spain and France, an area famous for its bandit stories. Amidst this dramatic mountain scenery there is an immense Romanesque bridge over a large river pool. This is perfect for a refreshing swim before the picnic lunch.
Day 4: THE SANTA MAGDALENA RIDGE RIDE
– GIRONA – TAPAS and WINE
Today we will ride along the ridge of the Santa Magdalena chapel with its medieval watch tower overlooking the Llierca valley. We ride through some very interesting forests with excellent views where it is not unusual to disturb a resting eagle and to be able to watch it soar gracefully beneath us in the valley. Then we arrive at the lodge for a late Spanish lunch, a delicious paella. After lunch we will drive you down to visit Girona. The capital of the region, this little city has wonderful shady streets, beautiful architecture, the widest cathedral in Europe and great shopping. Or you can take it easy and relax by the pool. Tonight you are going to discover the typical Spanish tapas. But what will tapas be without some good wines? So we will make sure that you can taste some of the most special local wines with this delicious food. Guaranteed a memorable night!
Day 5 and 6: THE TWO DAY TRAIL RIDE
– follow the river Fluvia to medieval Besalu
This is a circular ride that covers over 35 miles in two days. During the morning we ride through the valleys of La miana and we pass the spectacular church of Sant Frutós. We are leaving the mountains. When we get to the river Fluvia, one of Catalonia’s biggest rivers. We travel along the south bank of the river Fluvia, where we stop for a picnic.
We continue through scenery of rolling hills and pine forests were it is very likely to meet herds of sheep or wild boar. At dusk we arrive at our destination, the charming village of Vilert, where we leave our horses to graze and rest. We will be driven back to the lodge for a welcome meal with our popular house wine. The next day we ride through walnut groves to the lovely village of Crespia. We follow the north bank of the fluvia where we can enjoy the spectacular fluvial scenery with lots of different bird species. We cover many miles in a short time through sunflower fields, open meadows and forest. We stop in Besalu where we have a delicious picnic lunch by the river. Besalu, the ancient capital, is a jewel of Romanesque architecture set between two rivers. The squares, stone cut pillars and cool shady arched passageways are a wonder to behold. Not to mention the stained glass of its churches. You have some time to wander around and absorb the unique atmosphere of this ancient medieval village with its spectacular bridge and Romanesque architecture. In the afternoon we ride through the scented oak forests above beautiful ravines that so characterise this mountainous region known as the Garrotxa. The views are superb with the Pyrenees in the distance to the north and the Meditranean coast to the south. After some long canters we see the lodge, a welcome sight as we arrive in the late afternoon. A glass or two of Cava on the terrace overlooking the mountains followed by a delicious meal is a perfect end to a marvellous journey.
Day 7: COGULERAS, THE HIDDEN VALLEY
Our destination is Coguleras, a mountain valley that reaches almost up to the heights of Sant Juliá del Mont at 1.000 m. We ride quietly down through a forest alongside a mountain stream, to the flood plains by the little village of Sant Jaume de Llierca where we have coffee or a sherry in the local bar. Here there are some majestic farm houses built by the nobility in the 12th century. Today you will really appreciate the strength, agility and stamina of your horse in this varied terrain. They climb like mountain goats, and fly across the the flood plains like gazelles. For lunch we climb up to the ridge of Sant Julia. Here we eat a delicious picnic in a meadow beneath a shady tree, before riding home.
Day 8: DEPARTURE
Departure after breakfast.

HORSES AND TACK
The horses used are well schooled pure or crossbred Andalusians. They have all been carefully chosen and most are between 14.2hh (150cm) and 16hh (165cm) and are of a medium build. They are sure-footed, fit, forward going, responsive to ride and well adapted to the requirements of the sometimes rough terrain.
The horses are all trained using natural horsemanship techniques which helps to create an enthusiastic, good natured horse that is keen to collaborate with its rider, and really enjoys its work.
The tack is English and trekking style and most horses are ridden in snaffles. We use English saddles and trekking saddles. Saddle bags are provided to carry items required during the day and for picnic lunches.
A great deal of time has been spent selecting and training the horses for these trekking routes. Not too boisterous to be difficult for lower level riders, yet with enough spark to make an enjoyable ride to experienced riders. The majority of the horses used are Andalusian and Andalusian crosses, interspersed with other various beautiful Spanish breeds.
The horses live outside all the year round in a herd to helps to create a psychologically balanced animal well adapted to the necessities of trail riding and group riding. The herd of horses naturally adapts well to the rhythm of a trail ride, traveling up to 30km a day from place to place as a wild herd would do when looking for food and water.
Daily return to the center at the trail's end. Varied scenery, ride to rural villages, swim in the river pools, mini trail taster, tapas. Local culture, trip to Girona, the old city.

THE RIDING AND PREPARATION
As with all rides, to participate in these trips you must be a reasonably competent rider (English style). You should be well balanced, comfortable and secure in the saddle and able to control a well-schooled horse outside at all paces. Riders are expected to be able to cope with a variety of different going and different types of terrain. All the rides are aimed at reasonably capable riders, who are also fairly fit and riding regularly.
Participants are expected to ride regularly in the months before they go to ensure they can cope with the hours in the saddle. There are also places on the rides where you will need to dismount and lead your horse - if the ground gets rough or steep, and for a short time to warm the horses up and cool them down each day. Riders are expected to groom and tack up their own horse each day in preparation for rides.
Your guide will go over the week's program when you first arrive (usually at dinner on the first night), explaining the special characteristics of the Andalusian trail horse and of the tack used, then discussing each rider's ability, experience and their preference as to the kind of horse they would like to ride.
Natural Horsemanship course are available throughout the year !

SPECIFICALLY
FROM OUR PARTNER IN CATALONIA:
We
recommend wearing jodhpurs, as these protect your legs from soreness of jean
seams, and you will find a light-weight, cotton pair the most comfortable
during the summer months. You may want to bring two pairs.
Your
riding boots should have a sole with a safe tread and be comfortable for
walking, as you are certain to lead your horse on some occasions. Paddock
boots and half-chaps are the most flexible combination for comfort and leg
protection than tall riding boots.
A
long-sleeved shirt is recommended for protection against the sun and against
scratches when riding through undergrowth. A light cotton scarf can help to
avoid breathing in too much dust in dry areas. Bring sunglasses, also to
protect your eyes from dust.
We
strongly recommend bringing a water-bottle which can be refilled en-route;
these can be carried in the saddle-bags provided.
Rain
gear suitable for riding should be carried along, particularly during the
months from November through April. It is essential that you bring good wet
weather gear. Although it rains very little, when it does it is normally
a heavy downpour, consequently a jacket or cape and waterproof trousers are a
good idea.
Good
sun protection - gloves, sunscreen, and hat with a chin strap, sunglasses with
straps!
A
swimsuit, towel, shorts, and a windbreaker should also be taken.
A belt
pack in which to carry your camera and other small valuables during the ride is
handy.
Attire
on the ride daytime and evening, is strictly informal throughout, though if you
are planning to visit other cities on your own later you may wish to bring
dressier evening clothing.
Regular
film can be obtained locally, but special sizes may not be available - bring
plenty. And make sure you have plentiful batteries.
It is
a good idea to bring your own soap, since not all the hotels supply it. There
will be NO opportunity to have laundry done while on the ride.
It is best to pack in soft sided
luggage rather than suitcase styles. It is much more efficient for the
staff to handle and transport!

Between the mountains and the sea: 20 km from the French border, 50 km from the coast and 120 kms from Barcelona.
You will stay at the 11th century country stone house, which has been lovingly restored into a rural inn for international travelers from all walks of life. It is tucked away in the
Catalonian hills with breathtaking panoramic views over the Catalan
Pyrenees. It offers the warmest climate of all the Pyrenean range, an
almost unknown corner of Spain, but once discovered it is never forgotten. Dating back to AD 1000, the farm draws drinking water from its own well, while electricity is generated by a solar power system and a generator. Each room comes with a terrace and private bathroom.
RELAX: The farm and inn has a true feeling of space and comfort with its beautiful views on all sides. These can be enjoyed from the privacy of your bedroom's own terrace or from one of the many of the terraces and galleries around the house.
SWIM: Swim in our pool, set on a ridge above the house or in the river pool of the valley. Good swimming and great sun bathing here!
All meals each day are provided on this trip and inclusive in the price: Lunches will vary, sometimes you start early and return in time for lunch or you picnic along the way.
CATALAN CUISINE: Catalonia produces an extraordinary variety of foodstuffs: wild
mushrooms and game from the Pyrenees, the trinity of olives, grapes and
wheat from the hilly heartland, all manner of fruits, vegetables and
nuts from the irrigated lowlands, rice and fish from the river deltas
and a great variety of fish and shellfish from Catalonia's 500 km of
coastline.
