Arusha National Park Wilderness Ride
Tanzania
Tanzania
“Momella – a farm in Africa“. This German film documents the life of Margarete Trappe, a famous German “White Huntress”, also known as “Mother of the Masai”.
She arrived in Tanzania at the beginning of the 20th century and founded the farm called “Momella”, located in what is now Arusha National Park. As a result of her extraordinary life as a pioneering white woman in Africa and her cat-and-mouse games as a scout for Von Lettow Vorbeck in the First World War she became famous and later instigated conservation in this area.
The Arusha National Park has a dense vegetation and hosts great numbers of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wart hog, different types of antelope, hippo, several primate species including the black & white colobus monkey, flamingo and numerous birds. Elephant are also found here and we will use their paths during our riding safari.
Arusha National Park encompasses Mt. Meru which is the 2nd highest mountain in Tanzania and the 3rd highest free-standing mountain in Africa. There are dramatic variations in scenery: open savannah, dense forest and thick bush, impressive craters and many lakes. Furthermore there are 5 distinct vegetation zones which host a wealth of flora and fauna.
For the first time in the history of Tanzania´s National Parks TANAPA has given us exclusive access to take riding safaris within the park boundaries. Dive into the world of Margarete Trappe and follow her footsteps tracking game!

Sample Itinerary- subject to changes
Day 1: Arrival to Tanzania
We will pick you up from the airport and drive to the Farm, our starting point for the safari. The 358-acre plantation and horse farm is nestled into the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The house and rooms are situated to take in spectacular views of this impressive mountain, Africa’s highest peak. After arrival we will introduce you to the horses and start on a ride so you can become familiar with horses, tack and riding style. For the non-riders this is time to settle in their rooms or to stretch their legs on a relaxed walk. Both, ride and walk, follow the boundary of the farm through plantations, bush and grass land which is used for grazing horses and cattle. Wild animals also inhabit the area; these include Sykes monkeys, yellow baboons, duikers, bushbucks, reedbucks and bush pigs as well as nocturnal animals like aardvarks, porcupines and jackals. In the evening you will receive a briefing on all details about the safari and riding in game area.
Meals: Lunch & dinner. All drinks (except for spirits/liquor)
Accommodation: Guest house / cottages at the Farm.
Day 2: Riding in Arusha National Park
Transfer to Arusha National Park from where we soon will depart on horseback. Expect to see buffalo, zebra, giraffe, antelope and more at the "Little Serengeti". Often spoor and fresh smell will remind us of the close proximity of forest inhabitants and we will pass through breathtaking scenery with various glades and forests. After a short stop and a saddle picnic we continue towards Meru, passing the original home of the famous "White Huntress" Margarete Trappe. We will find our mobile camp set up in the middle of the fantastic setting of this impressive mountain. Spacious tents of 3m x 3.80m are equipped with comfortable beds and linen, private verandah and en-suite bath tent with toilet, sink and a shower, which the crew fills up with hot water every night. Enjoy a hot shower and delicious meal and go asleep with the stars that are visible from your pillow, and the night noises of Africa that are the background to your sleep. Nothing brings the experience of Africa closer.
Meals: All meals and drinks included (except for spirits/liquor)
Accommodation: Private mobile camping inside Arusha NP
Day 3: Buffalo Glades, Fig Tree Arch, and more!
Wake up with a cup of steaming tea in your tent. We will head off to the buffalo glade where these massive animals can be watched excitingly close whilst they are grazing or resting. Watch out for giraffe and antelope, also warthogs which feel most comfortable in close proximity of a buffalo herd. We will be back at camp for lunch and a siesta, thereafter change horses for a vehicle and drive to the Momella lakes. The first impression are pink flamingo flocks shimmering from far away. Hippos may be seen and there are good chances to watch other game near the water edge such as buffalo, giraffe and also some smaller species. The evening ride will lead us up the mountain through a “fairytale” forest with tree ferns and moss. The “Fig Tree Arch”, is a well-known landmark of Arusha Park, a natural feature created by assorted animals and birds. A few meters further there is a breathtaking view over the West Kilimanjaro area and Mt. Kilimanjaro glowing in the evening sun.
Meals: All meals and drinks included (except for spirits/liquor)
Accommodation: Private mobile camping inside Arusha NP
Day 4: Departure
Wake up with the sun, enjoy early breakfast and get on the horse to head back to the farm. Transfers to the airport in accordance with your flight.
Meals: Breakfast and non-alcoholic drinks included

Pace
Arusha Park offers various landscapes, from dense mountain forest, lush glades, swamps with springs and rivers to savannah. The terrain can be steep, rocky, thorny or with holes and for this reason the predominant pace will be walk, with only few trot or canters for a change. The ride is still demanding, and riders need to manage riding up or down steep hills, as well as small jumps over rivers or logs, sometimes might need to jump off the horse so the horse can maneuver over or through a tricky passage. We spend 4 to 6 hours per day in the saddle.
Riding Level
You need to be able to react to the movement of wildlife which may startle the horse. You may also be required to gallop out of trouble so the minimum ability for these rides is 'Strong Intermediate'. Riders must be able to post to the trot for extended periods (at least 10 minutes at a time) and be able to use skilled leg aids to control a horse. Riders must be able to canter with a secure seat. Good balance & state of fitness is required! It will be at the discretion of the company whether you will be permitted to ride, taking into consideration the safety and enjoyment of the group as a whole. So please do not over estimate your riding skills as you will not receive a refund if you are denied.
Horses
The horses are much loved, well mannered and in excellent condition. A variety of reliable, for safari-purpose trained horses like Partbred- and Anglo-Arab, Thoroughbred, Trakehner, Bavarian Warmblood, Australian Brumby etc., ranging from 14 – 16.2 hands (140 – 165 cm) high – there is a horse to suit everyone. Forward and fast or solid and steady, let them know what you like!
Tack
Tack is usually bitless (Hackamore and Sidepull). There are good quality treeless (Startrek / Trekker), Endurance (Podium) and Trail Saddles (Sommer, Trailrider / Leon Liversage).
Guides
We offer our guests an intimate and personal horse riding holiday, affording them the best that East Africa has to offer in terms of the African 'Bush'. Our horseback safaris are highly personalized, very much ‘off the beaten track’ and away from human settlement. You will be accompanied on all rides and activities by your hosts ensuring that your riding holiday will be a truly memorable one. Your hosts are both veterinarians and they ensure the condition of their horses is top quality. Even in challenging circumstances in the bush the condition of their horses are superb.
Weight Limit
200 lbs (some exceptions for highly experienced riders). There is a specific maximum weight each horse can safely carry and it is for this reason that we will weigh riders before assigning their horse. Please note that the saddles available will fit riders of an average body mass index. Therefore the relationship of size and weight matters and in some cases we might not be able to offer a riding trip even if the rider’s weight is below the required weight limit.
Your Safety
Every ride will be accompanied by one of the owners as guide and a back-up rider. They will be equipped with a GPS, first aid kit, mobile phone and radio-call.

Accommodations
This is a wilderness wide, so nights will be a mixture of farm-stay and camping.
Night 1: The Farm
The farm is an intimate small lodge, is located on a lovingly restored old coffee estate. We accommodate our guests in comfortable, spacious cottages, most of which feature a spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro. We have 5 cottages total: 4 with double beds and 1 family guest house with 2 double and 1 single bed). All cottages have en-suite bathroom, private verandah, early morning tea-coffee service for wake-up-call, and laundry service. WIFI internet access is only very limited available on the farm, as there is only a private satellite connection with slow and daily limited consumption. So make sure that during your stay you can survive without an online connection apart from e.g. a short mail or WhatsApp. Alternatively you can purchase a internet enabled SIM card for your own smartphone/iPad, which we can help you to get in the next town.
Night 2 & 3: Camping
Spacious tents of 3m x 3.80m are equipped with comfortable beds and linen, private verandah, and en-suite bath tent with toilet, sink and a shower, which the crew fills up with hot water every night.
Room Occupancy
Single supplement fee is waived if the rider is willing to stay in a smaller tent with bath facilities next to the tent.
Meals
All meals are included from lunch on Day 1 to breakfast on the last day. Meals are prepared fresh and most of the ingredients are produced on the farm. This includes most vegetables, meat, milk and milk products. There will be fresh home-baked bread on your table every morning. There will also be home-made confectionary available in the afternoon. Depending on the schedule, lunch will be served in camp or under a shady tree as a picnic. Non-alcoholic drinks like water, homemade juices, tea, coffee available throughout the day. For safety considerations we will not serve alcohol for lunch if a riding itinerary is scheduled for the afternoon. If no riding then beer or wine can be served for lunch. In the evening there will be sunset drinks, and beer and wine with dinner. Lunch will usually be taken en route at a scenic place (on a hill, under an acacia tree, etc). Breakfast and dinner will usually be taken in camp, depending on the weather and temperature this might be in the mess tent or again at a scenic place near camp.
