Andean Crossing Adventure
Cordoba/Mendoza
Argentina
We will ride through the Aconcagua region up to the Chilean border. Here stands the most massive and immense mountains in America, including its tallest peak, the Aconcagua (23,200 ft). Riding at heights over 11 000 ft., through small trails, past fairy tales valleys and colorful creeks… It is in these uninhabited places, which you can only reach on horseback, where huge herds of guanacos roam freely and the Andean condor nests. Only in unique places like this can you enjoy watching them in plenitude.
This is also a place where history was written. In 1817, the Los Andes Army, led by San Martin (Gral Liberator) crossed through this exact same spot on their way to liberate Argentina, Chile and later Perú from the Spanish Conquistadors. The setting offers a glimpse of the titanic efforts our Fathers of Independence had to overcome.
As the sun sets, the spectacular stars of the southern hemisphere will cover the sky. Relax at the camp with its peaceful atmosphere. The campfire lightens up the darkness as you share a cup of coffee or tea. All this creates the ideal ambiance to feel the timeless spirit of nature and make new friends.

You don't need to be a supurb athlete, but you do need to be in a good health condition, so that you can enjoy a 10-days expedition in direct contact with nature, far away from daily comfort or commodities (For example: It is necessary to mount and get off a horse many times a day, sleep in tents etc.)
The land we will cross has varied terrain such as crossing of rivers, ascents and descents on narrow and steep paths. This is not difficult for the horses, as theses mountain horses are used to the climbs.
The days vary between 4 and 9 hours on horseback. The maximum altitude above sea level is 4500 meters. We put the Andes crossing in the category "moderate difficulty".
Passport and Visa Requirements:
Passports Valid passport required by all nationals referred to in chart. The minimum passport validity is equivalent to the time granted by the immigration authorities. Visas Not required. more
The morphological diversity displayed by the Mendoza Province's uneven landscape, makes for diverse weather conditions. However, of one thing one can be certain, the sun shines daily on both the plains and the mountains.
The mountain range featuring snow capped peaks, can be cold and snowy during the southern hemisphere's winter (May-September). In contrast, the plains are wonderfully warm and dry, with the little rain accumulating during the summer months.
Over the valleys interposed between these formations, weather conditions are notably moderated.
On the eastern part of the La Paz and General Alvear Departments, Mendoza, a narrow belt of transitional mild temperate weather signals the gradual change from the arid western part to the more benign conditions and milder weather of the east.
Temperatures
In average, the Southern hemisphere summer temperatures fluctuate between 18º C and 33º C, with warm days and cool nights. During the Southern hemisphere winter, the lowest is 3º C, while the highest recorded throughout this season is 16º.
Be prepared for the chance of bad weather spells during the trip.
Temperatures vary greatly with altitude. In the high mountains (3000 meters), the temperature can drop to -5º C at night, even in the summer months. During the sunny, summer days days, the maximum temperatures at lower altitudes can reach 30ºC. Don't forget your sunscreen and a hat with wide brims.
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Wind stopper jacket
- Warm clothes, 1 sweater/ 1 polar jacket Thermal underwear, long underwear or cotton leggings
- Wool Cap and gloves (like ski gloves)
- Leather gloves to mount
- Warm Sleeping bag (-15ºC)
- 2 Trousers (comfortable for riding) like the gaucho bombacha and if the weather is cold you can carry warm underwear. Don´t use jeans as they are hard and in low temperatures they make you feel cold
- 2 long-sleeve shirts
- 5 - 6 pairs of socks
- 2 t-shirts
- Trekking shoes or sneakers (riding boots preferable)
- Comfy shoes for after riding
- Scarf
- Gaiters to moun
Suggested personal gear:
- Personal medicine
- 1 plastic bottle or a water bottle
- Flashlight and batteries
- Sun glasses. Eye drops (for persons who are sensitive or allergic to the dust)
- Sun protective cream (factor 30 or more), moisturizing cream, protective lipstick, milking cream in case of chapped
- Skin
- Elements for personal hygiene (hand towel, soap, toothbrush, towelettes, etc.)
- Camera photos!!
- Do Not bring a watch
What should I take with me on the horse?
You should not wear a backpack or hanging things since you can feel uncomfortable throughout the trip.
Each person will be provided with saddle bags to keep personal belongings, a poncho made of vinyl material, which has two main functions: to protect you in case of rain storms and as blanket to cover up the sleeping bag at night. It is important to take a bag to leave in storage with clean clothes for the return and another bag (preferable duffel bag) to keep the personal gear transported by mule. (10 to 15 kilos per person). The bag must be resistant as the packsaddle can damage it.
You will also have to be careful with sharp or fragile elements that will be transported in those bags

3 nights are in hotels the others are spent camping in dome tents (2 or 3 people per tent- sorry no single tents). All meals and drinks included during the riding expedition, bit not at the hotel.
The accommodation will be in igloo shape tents. You will need a sleeping bag of minus 15ºC. You don´t need any insulating mattress as we will use the traditional saddle of the "gaucho" -the "recado" - made up of several layers of material, leather and skin of sheep which we use as a comfortable mattress. Some people prefer sleeping outside the tent, which is a wonderful idea to enjoy the stars and serenity of the night.
There are two important conditions to choose a good place for camping. There must be water and pasture for the horses. We try to choose a nice place, protected from the wind, which often blows very strongly in open places, between the mountains. Everyone pitches in to help make camp enjoyable, with tasks such as collecting wood for the camp fire.
At nightfall we start the fire. We sit around the campfire to warm us up, and we start telling stories and urban legends typical from the region. We pass the mate (argentinian tea) around and soon the dinner will be served. We recommend you to carry warm clothes as temperatures at night can be very low.
For breakfast we offer "mate", homemade bread and toasts, "dulce de leche"(caramel spread) and fruit jam, tea, coffee, milk, cookies and crackers.
Lunches are light, because we must continue riding after eating. We prepare cold cuts and cheese sandwiches; salami, ham and other cold meat nibbles. Tuna fish or mackerel, olives, homemade bread, mayonnaise, fruits, and juice. Suppers are abundant and comforting, charcoal-grilled "asado" (steak-like meat) or chicken, pasta, rice, salads of lettuce and tomato, homemade bread, vegetable soups, fruits from the season, wine from Mendoza and juice.
During our trip we prepare meals which are varied. If you are vegetarian, just let us know and we will prepare meals without meat. If you have any other special diets, you will have to advise us in advance.
The places we go through are uninhabited, far from any kind of civilization. During the trip we won´t find any bathrooms nor refuges.
This trip includes
some wine with dinner
and can accommodate special dietary requests.
