Teteven Mountains Balkan Ride
Mountains
Bulgaria
On horseback in Bulgaria... Discover the Southeastern European culture, charm & natural beauty!
Teteven Mountain of the Balkans promises to combine for you some of the most inspiring landscapes that the country has to offer - majestic valleys with shimmering rivers, deep and ancient forest, hidden lush meadows, impressive ridges crowned with rocky peaks. Our riding tour in the Stara Planina (or Balkan Mountains) will let you encounter spectacular views and quaint villages scattered on the foothills, where life is still lived in an old rhythm and with deep traditions. Wonderfully preserved nature and the authentic and honest lifestyle led by the local people will no doubt intrigue travelers and beckon for them to discover more of the unique and mysterious Southeastern Europe countryside. A great part of Teteven mountain is located within Central Balkan National Park, where we find the immense natural beauty of the Boatin and Tsarichina reserves and the caves “Morovitsa” and “Benkovskata” that are reminiscent of old haidouk times. And cultural attractions abound – we highlight the Glozhene Monastery of "St. George", housing its 1000-year icon, sits like a sentinel on high inaccessible cliffs and the Thracian fortress, Chertigrad, dating back to pre-Roman times! We try to offer great diversity with this tour! You will ride in the foothills among pastoral scenery and inhabited villages and climb up to 2000m of rugged and beautiful mountainside; Exciting trots and gallops whenever possible in the flat lands and then naviagte slowly and carefully the impressively steep sections, where we will even need to lead the horses occasionally! You will admire the natural beauty of the Earth while enjoying the hospitality and cuisine of your fellow man - rakiya and other home-made appetizers is an integral part of the experience!
Tour Highlights...
Stara Planina or Balkans are the longest mountain range in Bulgaria. It stretches from the western border all the way to the Black Sea in the East, dividing the entire country into two! Fighters against the Ottoman Empire hid in the forests here and the Bulgarian spirit was revived in its towns in the XVII and XVIII centuries.
The Glozhene Monastery (St. George) was founded in the XIII century. Situated on extremely scenic and high cliffs. Vasil Levski - the Apostle of Freedom - found refuge here in Turkish times.
Chertigrad is a Thracian fortress from Antiquity, which was used in the early Middle Ages. Its ruins are located in a beautiful location high above the valley of Cherni Vit river.
The Morovitsa cave is more than three kilometers long and inhabited by a colony of bats! In the ancient times it was also inhabited by the primitive people of the region.
Central Balkans National Park covers the high central part of Stara Planina. 70 000 hectares of ancient forest and including representatives of endangered species. The best preserved beech forest on the Balkan Peninsula is in the Boatin reserve. The average age of the trees here is 130 years old and the area is protected by the UNESCO “Man and Biosphere” Program.

Rates do not include:
Meals on Day 1, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, personal travel insurance (mandatory).
Day 1: Arrival in Sofia. Transfer and overnight at a cozy centrally located guesthouse in Sofia (private facilities). Meals are on your own today.
Day 2: Golyam Izvor – Bankov Dol
Transfer from Sofia to the village of Golyam Izvor. Here we meet the horses. The tour starts with a ride to Glozhene Monastery where we will have a break for lunch. Then, the route passes near by Morovitza Cave where we will go for a short walk to explore. Then the route continues to Bankov Dol area. Overnight in villa “Rossi” (shared facilities). The terrain is mountainous but the vertical drops of the route are not large. The ride is along dirt roads and paths through meadows and deciduous forests, typical of the lower part of the mountain. Duration of the ride without breaks: 4 hours.
Day 3: Bankov Dol – Yamna village.
Today’s route continues in the lower part of the mountain, but in the direction of the mountain central ridge. The terrain is similar to the one from the previous day. Possibility to ride at a trot and canter in some areas. On the way - a stop at Benkovski Cave (Benkovski is one of the greatest Bulgarian revolutionaries from the era of the Ottoman rule) and at the ruins of Chertigrad fortress. Overnight in Yamna village at HJotel Perfect (private facilities). Duration of the ride without breaks: 5 hours.
Day 4: Yamna village – Momina Polyana hut
This day we reach the central ridge of Stara Planina, along which we will ride at 2000 m.a.s.l. The trail starts with a climb in deciduous and mixed forests until we reach the crest. Then, the vertical drops are small–100-200 meters each – for overcoming the ridge peaks. The ridge is unwooded and open and magnificent views are displayed from there both to Teteven Balkan on the North where the tour has passed the previous days, and to the Southern Bulgaria on the other side of the mountain. In that part of the day transition there is an opportunity to ride at a trot and canter. However, when descending to Momina Polyana hut there are steep areas where the horses must be led. Overnight at the Momina Hut at 1640 m elevation (private facilities). Vertical drop: 1200 m of ascent and 400 m descent. Duration of the ride without the breaks: 7-8 hours.
Day 5: Momina Polyana hut – Benkovski hut
This is the second day in which the route goes high up in the mountain- along the very ridge. The trail starts with a climb to the ridge through pine forests. Once we reach the grassy and leveled high parts we will again have the opportunity for a varied ride with panorama views. Like the previous day, in some sections of the route the horses must be led. Overnight at Benkovski Hut –1540 m elevation (shared facilities). Vertical drop: 400 m ascent and 500 m descent. Duration of the ride without breaks: 5-6 hours.
Day 6: Benkovski hut – Cherni Vit village.
Once we cross Stara Planina ridge we will begin to descent to its lower parts. The route passes through deciduous forests along the Boatin reserve and by the small picaresque village of Divchovoto; afterwards we will reach the final point for the day – Cherni Vit village where we will stay for the night (private facilities). Today’s route includes sections of asphalt in addition to the dirt roads and paths. After the initial descent there is a possibility to ride at a trot and canter. Vertical drop: 1000 m. Duration of riding without a break: 5-6 hours.
Day 7: Cherni Vit village – Golyam Izvor village.
On the last day of the equestrian transition the route again passes through the lower parts of the mountain, among meadows, forests and villages scattered in the folds of Teteven Balkan. On the way we will enjoy scenic landscapes and we will touch the live of the local people and observe their unadulterated lifestyle. Overnight in Golyam Izvor village (shared facilities).
The vertical drops, like on the first day, are not great, with possibility to ride at a trot and gallop in suitable sections. Duration of the ride without the breaks: 4 hours.
Day 8: Departure after breakfast..

THE HORSES:
The local East-Bulgarian breed
with a
mid-height of 1,50 cm, is well known to be a thoughtful and tough mount
and
are thus extremely well-adapted to the mountainous region of the Rhodope
Mountains. They have been established by the shepherds in the mountains
over the centuries. This horse is the best adapted to the mountain
terrain we cover (rocks, steep paths, fallen trees, etc.). It is
familiar with the local fauna and flora and is brave on the trail. All
the horse we are well behaved and are used to each other so you will not
experience any trouble with them walking, trotting or cantering in a
group together.
TACK:
We use Western - Military Saddles
RIDING LEVEL:
We expect that you are confident with both the trot and canter. Some steep descents where you have to lead your horse !

quite exhausting for trekking or simple walking over open territories.
Rainfalls are short, but heavy showers are possible, and can be more
prolonged during spring and late autumn.
We suggest in addition to your
riding attire and regular clothing, you bring a raincoat, polar fleece
and light sporting jacket.
We provide helmets for the riders. We do not provide chaps.
The
cell phone coverage in most of the territory of Bulgaria is covered
well with a mobile connection. However these tours are done in
mountainous areas where the signal can be weak or occasionally
completely lacking from time to time. In such a situation normally you
just need to change your location a bit in order to find available
network.
