Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival Day:
Guests are met and greeted by one of our staff member and picked-up by shuttle-van from the “Franciscan Inn” in Santa Barbara (our meeting point) at 10AM on the first day. Should you prefer pick-up from Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), our staff and shuttle will pick you up at 9:30AM on that morning. For guests arriving with their own car, Santa Barbara Airport offers a long-term parking facility.
From Santa Barbara guests are transported to the Rose Valley trailhead above the scenic town of Ojai in the coastal mountains 60 miles south-east of Santa Barbara and 3,200 feet above sea level. Heading towards Ojai, the drive along Casitas Pass offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, coastal mountains, and Lake Casitas in the beautiful Ojai Valley.
Guests arrive at the trailhead with their personal gear packed in a duffle bag. There is a dunnage limit of 30 to 40lbs. per person for the Wilderness pack-trip. Complimentary, freshly dry-cleaned sleeping bags for the Wilderness pack-trip will be provided by G.Goodfield & Company.
Saddle up for the customized deluxe pack-trip into the Sespe Wilderness. Follow the Sunset trail into one of the most natural and unspoiled areas in Old California.
The Sespe river starts as a spring at Portrero Seco. We begin our trip about twenty miles below Portrero Seco at a location called Pierdra Blanca. Piedra Blanca is named after the enormous white rock formations that are indeed petrified sand dunes. Portrero Seco is known for an adobe where Juan Murrieta used to reside with his band of Vaqueros. Murrieta was known to some as a bandit and to others a hero. Learn about the history of the Los Padres National Forest: the trails we use in the Los Padres are the same paths and trade-routes that had been used for hundreds of years by the Chumash Indians, Spanish Settlers and the American Cowboy. The scenic ride to camp is about four hours long with stops along the way for lunch, a swim and a stretch.
Arrive at the comfortable full wilderness camp equipped with tents and cots, a back-country kitchen, sun-shower and latrines. Relax as the sun sets and savor a delicious, home-style cooked meal around the campfire. Sing and share stories of the open range and enjoy the romance of the West under the stars.
Days 2 and 3:
Wake up to freshly brewed coffee and a hearty cowboy breakfast!
Adventure out for a horseback ride through spectacular countryside, along oak-shaded trails; traverse sparkling streams under blue California skies; swim or fish for rainbow trouts along the way. Enjoy a nature hike, relax with a picnic lunch in the tranquility of the untouched Sespe Wilderness.
One of the highlights on our springtime pack-trips is seeing the variety of wildflowers our backcountry has to offer. The California Poppy and Indian Paintbrush are just a few of the abundant wildflowers you will see while riding the trail through Purple Sage. You will be submersed in and array of vegetation and an unforgettable aroma:
Manzanita, Mountain Lupine, Birdseye Gilia, Blue Curls Bush Monkey Flower, California Poppies Cream Cups, Indian Paintbrush and mountain Violets to name some of them. For those who like to take photos, this is a wonderful chance to capture a unique blend of Flora and Fauna on Horses and Mules. Don’t forget your camera and batteries.
Ridge tops of six thousand feet such as the Great Topa Topa are just part of the everyday scenery on the Sespe River. Explore old homesteads at a place called “Willets” where Jonny Cash used to hold up with his pals to get away and enjoy good company and solitude.
Condors, California Black Bears and Coastal Blacktail Deer are just some of the critters we find along the way. We have three kinds of foxes and many types of hawks, Golden- and Bald Eagles.
After a day in the saddle, stay over-night at the Wilderness camp on the second and third day, enjoy local cuisine and dinners prepared on the open fire. Rekindle the Cowboy spirit with an evening around the campfire in the peace and solitude of the back-country.
The Sespe Hot Springs is rated number one in California for its natural remoteness and undisturbed state. They don’t call it a hot spring for nothing; it is hot! Decide for yourself what temperature is comfortable for you as you progress closer to the source of the spring where the clean running water gets hotter and hotter. Cattle operations, both new and old, are a common sight as we pack through
Old California with our mules loaded. Old homesteads are passed along the way, where settlers made “quite a go” of backcountry life, raising cattle and sheep and farming.
Day 4:
After a gourmet breakfast, get ready to leave camp. Horses are being saddled and mules are packed for the ride towards Rose Valley. Return to the trailhead by mid-afternoon concluding the Sespe Wilderness adventure. Prepare to leave for the tour down the mountain road to the shores of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Barbara, where luxury and relaxation await you at the charming “Franciscan Inn”. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant on the beach, just steps away from the hotel. Dinner is included.
Day 5:
A (Spring) Enjoy a day in the magnificant Santa Ynez Valley!
Guests are ready in the lobby of the “Franciscan Inn” at 7:45AM for the scenic, one hour drive to Los Olivos and its exquisite beauty of the inland valley ranch and wine country. Saddle up at Fess Parkers Winery & Vineyard for a two hour private wine tour on horseback. Discover the thousand acres of beauty surrounding the winery.
Savor the unforgettable views of the Figuero Mountains and the Santa Ynez Valley, and explore the everyday operations of winemaking. Enjoy a gourmet lunch at Patrick’s Side Street Café following the ride and taste premier, local wines at the
“Consilience Winery” tasting room. Guests arrive back at the hotel “Franciscan Inn” around 3PM for their second overnight accommodation. Guest are free for the remainder of the afternoon and evening to explore and enjoy the many wonderful features and activities the coastal resort town has to offer. We will provide you with a list of recommendations on activities, sights and restaurants for Santa Barbara. Dinner is not included for this evening.
B (Summer)
Off to an early start to enjoy a full day in and around the magnificant Santa Ynez Valley, guests are ready in the lobby of the “Franciscan Inn” at 7:45AM to tour the picturesque Pacific Coast and the exquisite beauty of the inland valley ranch and wine country.

A $75 donation per person towards the sanctuary is included in the trip rate. During the four-hour visit a gourmet picnic lunch will be served on the beautiful premises of the ranch. The tour continues on towards the Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang with a one-hour visit to Flag Is Up Farms, the breeding and training facility of Monty Roberts, the legendary author and trainer of the ‘Join-Up’® technique, also known as ‘The Man Who Listens to Horses’.
A stop-over in the renowned little Western town of Los Olivos offers guests the opportunity to taste premier local wines at the “Consilience Winery” tasting room and to enjoy spectacular views on the drive back to Santa Barbara over the picturesque San Marcos Pass.
