Surf Getaway at the Turtle Inn
Belize Coast
Belize
Turtle Inn rests on the shore of the longest coral reef in the Western hemisphere.
While you may not come to find the sea, the mystery of the sea may find you.
"The new Turtle Inn is a personal joy. It features any number of original ideas and details. I made the resort as rustic as I love, and as luxurious as I could."
- Francis Ford Coppola
Picturesque thatched beach cabanas make up the classic vision of a Caribbean hideaway set on the sandy shore peaking out between the palms.
Set on the sparkling white sand of the peninsula about a mile north of Placencia are seven cozy cottages on stilts where you could wash ashore and be happy for a very long time. Hammocks run between the palm trees and an old canoe is grounded in the sand. Each cabana has bamboo walls, thatched ceilings, fans, private baths, one or two beds with native decor, and enjoys the same great beachfront view. A fully equipped two-bedroom beach house is also available for rent. Electricity at the Inn is powered by solar panels, so there is plenty of it, and no generator noise (unique in Belize).
The main thatched-roof building features a small dining room, bar, and library. A perfect spot to relax, enjoy your favorite beverage and visit with other resort guests.
Activities are endless in this Eco-traveler's dream destination of Belize. From the central coastal location Skip and other local guides will lead excursions to visit Mayan ruins, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, and Monkey River, or try your hand at fishing on the reef. With advance reservation, Skip will lead excursions into the Maya Mountain jungle interior, camping and exploring the wilds of Belize. A favorite pastime is kayaking in the mangrove lagoon to see the shy manatees or out on nearby cayes, snorkeling and exploring the underwater habitat. Turtle Inn strongly focuses on sharing knowledge and preserving the unique diversity of Belize's wild environment.
The open-air dining room overlooking the sea features Caribbean and American cuisine with an array of local specialties. Breakfast and lunch are served daily along with a five-course dinner by lantern light featuring seafood, meat, and vegetarian choices. The menu changes daily and fresh fish are welcome from guest anglers.
Turtle Inn staff will assist with flight reservations and logistics during your stay. It is recommended that you fly to Placencia from wherever you are in Belize, as the roads in this part of the country are not paved. Rental vehicles are available, and a 4-wheel drive is the thing to do. The dirt roads are pot holed; dusty when it's dry and a quagmire when it's wet. Average speeds are 25 mph and car rental and gas is expensive. The way to see the peninsula is by boat or walking along the beach. Impressive views are a bonus when you fly over the countryside and coastline getting to and from Placencia.

The bungalows, all steps from the beach, are built in the style of traditional Balinese thatched huts, have artisan-crafted furnishings, a luxury private bath and a broad screened deck to welcome in the tropical sea air. Enjoy luxury in the spirit of the natural landscape.
Polite, efficient staff members offer new arrivals a welcoming drink and an opportunity to sit in the open-air lobby, where they can admire the ocean view while their rooms are prepared. These structures are connected by thatch-roof walkways, as is the adjacent upscale gift shop. Public areas are limited to these buildings, which also house the bar and restaurant. Guests can access the Internet here or in a small computer room off to one side of reception.
Turndown service is standard, and complimentary tea and coffee are brought to the cabanas each morning by pleasant wait staff. For guests doing both beach and jungle, the Turtle Inn provides a stylish add-on to a stay at Blancaneaux.
The hotel keeps its carbon footprint down by not using air-conditioning or other techno-trappings. All its villas and cottages are built from locally sourced material (thatch, bamboo, limestone and wood) and kitchen ingredients are grown on site.
The Turtle Inn has two pools surrounded by chaise lounges; one a sea-green circle on the lawn by the bar, moments from the sea, the other a triangular infinity pool nestled between the cottages. Beach captains attend to cushions, towels and sun umbrellas.
Cottages
Set back from the water, the Garden View Cottages have a gorgeous view of the lush gardens, a queen-size bed, Chinese bath, private garden, outdoor shower, hand carved Balinese doors, and a screen porch.

RESTAURANT AND BAR
- The Mare Restaurant features Italian cuisine, fresh seafood, and local specials, it procures most of its produce from the massive organic garden at Blancaneaux Lodge. Taste the gourmet pizzas baked-to-order in our brick pizza oven.
The centerpiece of the Ristorante Mare dining area is an Italian brick oven, and as at the Blancaneaux, many of the meals are based on Coppola family recipes; the greens come from the inn's own and the jungle lodge's organic gardens and the wine list favors bottles pulled from Coppola's Napa Valley estate.
There is also barefoot dining at the Gauguin Grill close to the beach, where seafood dinners are served facing the ocean. Auntie Luba's on the lagoon side of the road specializes in Belizean cuisine. Reservations are required both here and at the grill. The sand-floor bar pours expensive cocktails but offers happy-hour discounts.
The Skip White Bar creates refreshing beverages and cocktails throughout the day and into the evening. At the Laughing Fish Bar, you may enjoy a cool drink a few steps from the sea.
RESORT FEATURES
Gift Store, Spa with a soothing experience replete with relaxing Thai massage; and a Dive Shop (we offer scuba diving, snorkeling, and a wide range of PADI certification courses for both the beginner and the more experienced diver).
