Pioneer Trail
Lake District
Chile
Start off with a night in the picturesque lakeside town of Puerto Varas, before enjoying the traditional hospitality of our riverside and mountain lodges from which you ride through virgin rainforest, along a 200-year old trail and explore a remote valley, with waterfalls and granite peaks. Kayak and sail along Chile’s northern-most fjord, in the company of seabirds, dolphins and sea lions!
Ride across the Andes onto a plateau of lakes, waterfalls, rivers and very ancient forests. Follow the legendary 200 year old Pioneer Trail once used by the Indians, Spaniards, and Missionaries. Experience a full day of kayaking on the beautiful Estuario Reloncavi before you arrive to our Riverside Lodge where your horseback trek will begin. Immerse yourself into a forgotten world of pristine nature far from the conventional tourist tracks. We will lead you through densely forested valleys and exciting high mountain passes, pass through a beautifully scenic blend of isolated pioneer farms, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and the ancient Alerce rainforest. The ride goes up through the uninterrupted and pure wilderness to the Andean valley of La Junta often called the "Yosemite of Chile". Amidst the granite mountain peaks are stands of 1,000 year-old Alerce trees and an amazing variety of wildlife - condors, pumas and songbirds. We spend a day there, a short horseback ride in the morning and an afternoon to relax or hike and swim. Hike the six kilometer nature-trail into the rainforest to a lagoon and/or to the La Junta Canyon. The next day we descend again on horse, back to the River Lodge and its Cabanas and we enjoy a candle lit dinner to bring a close to our breath taking 3-day horseback trek. The following morning we board a fishing vessel (departure at 09:00 AM) and pass through a spectacular scenery of snow-topped mountains, volcanos, hot springs and bays complete with the resident sea lions and dolphins. Another night at the Riverside Lodge brings the end of a wonderful and special multi-sport holiday and we transfer you back to Puerto Varas, safe and sound and definitely most happy.

Via horseback is probably the best way to travel and traverse this varied landscape. The mountainous terrain; the numerous waterfalls and streams and rivers; densely grown rain forest trails; and sometimes rainy days are effortlessly handled by local Criollo horses, who take travelers along centuries-old pathways.
The guided horseback treks we offer take you between our two lodges – the sea-level Riverside Lodge, and the Mountainside Lodge in a high Andean Valley – as well as beyond. The trails traverse endangered temperate rain forest and Andean homesteads, allowing you to experience wider vistas, mountain hospitality, and nature at its most pristine.
All trails are designed to suit all levels, safe enough for a novice, without much previous riding experience – while also kept appealing to the seasoned equestrian. The longer trails may involve some hiking.
Our Criollo mounts are sturdy, calm mountain creatures. They know the trail as well as the huasos and guides! With them, you will cross ice-cold streams and rivers, negotiate rocky paths, and reach places in the towering green Valdivian rain forest where very few outsiders ever venture.
