Renaissance Castles of the Loire
Loire
France
The Loire is the longest river in France and its banks are lined with beautiful forestland and handsome vineyards. Immersed in the landscape of beauty and nobility, the more you will come to understand why French aristocracy once flourished here and built their magnificent castles. The Loire valley has preserved its stately charm and lifestyle - the cuisine here is forever exclusive and refined, with splendid and distinguished wines. This horse riding holiday in the Loire provides riders with a pampered vacation experience with the best in local cuisine, wine, the arts and a endlessly romantic landscape that will seduce the hearts of travelers near and far.
For 2012 we are offering two itineraries in the Loire Valley following the Renaissance and the King's castles...
Castle of Chaumont
- The Château de Chaumont was purchased by Catherine de Medici in 1560, a year after her late husband Henry II's death. There she entertained numerous astrologers, among them Nostradamus. In 1559 she forced Diane de Poitiers, her late husband's long-term mistress, to exchange the Château de Chenonceau for the Château de Chaumont. Diane de Poitiers only lived at Chaumont for a short while.
Castle of Amboise
- King Francis I was raised at Amboise, which belonged to his mother, Louise of Savoy, and during the first few years of his reign the château reached the pinnacle of its glory. As a guest of the King, Leonardo da Vinci came to Château Amboise in December 1515 and lived and worked in the nearby Clos Lucé, connected to the château by an underground passage.
Castle of Chenonceaux
- As Regent of France, Catherine would spend a fortune on the château and on spectacular nighttime parties. In 1560, the first ever fireworks display seen in France took place during the celebrations marking the ascension to the throne of Catherine's son Francis II. The grand gallery, which extended along the existing bridge to cross the entire river, was dedicated in 1577.
Castle Gué Péan
- What sets this castle apart from others in the region is its peculiar tower roof. Most of its neighbors have blue slate laid in straight sides, or conical forms. Château Gue-Pean has a tower top that resembles a bell. Perhaps the castle's lurid history allows it to be so flippant. Some say this is where King Francoise I and Mary Queen of Scots would meet for privacy.
Castle of Cheverny
- A stone staircase dated 1634 carved with tropies of arms and the arts leads to the Grand Appartements. A guard room with a collection of arms and armour leads to the Chambre du Roi, richly hung with five Paris tapestries after designs by Simon Vouet, representing the story of Ulysses.
Chambord Castle
- The royal Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its very distinct French Renaissance architecture which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures.
on the King's Castles Ride we will have the opportunity to visit the castles of CHENONCEAUX, AMBOISE, la BOURDAISIERE, VILLANDRY,AZAY LE RIDEAU and the ABBAYE DE FONTEVRAUD where Henry Plantagenet and the queen Aliénor d'Aquitaine rest for eternity. We will finish our trip in Saumur where the national riding school is based.

Anglo-Arab horses, French saddlebred, and French trotters. They are robust and solid, their size varies between 15 an 17 hands. The mild climate in the Loire region (created by mild breezes blowing in from the Atlantic) has produced an equal mildness and moderation on the part of the people. The Loire is often the line of demarcation in France's weather, between the Northern climate and the Southern.
You can expect frequent showers in the spring months, whereas the summer brings forth sultry, humid heat. The balmy Autumn season produces brilliant red and gold foliage, and lively festivals take place in many towns and villages to celebrate the grape harvest. A damp chill settles over The Loire Valley in winter, and many of the chateaux close.

They are all fully equipped with a private bathroom with either a bath or shower, direct telephone lines with the possibility of a Wifi connection and a television with the satellite channels. For your comfort, you can find a sitting room on the ground floor where you can relax, read, have a drink or even play one of the family games that are at your disposition.
