Day 1: Quito or Guayaquil - Santa Cruz
You will fly from Quito or Guayaquil to the Galapagos Islands, arriving around 11h30 and 13h30, depending of to flight schedule on Baltra Island.
Upon arrival at Baltra airport, the group will travel by bus to the Itabaca Channel, followed by a 5 minute ferry ride to Santa Cruz Island. A private charter bus will take you south to the town of Puerto Ayora and the Aventura Lodge. Here, the group will be greeted by the Naturalist Guides and the tour escorts. Lunch at Aventura Lodge.
In the afternoon we take a tour to Garrapatero Beach. Depart to Garrapatero beach, a 25 minutes bus ride to the right spot were an easy trail start to lead you to the beach in only 15 more minutes. This beautiful white sandy beach is known for its flamingos and finches and a place where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
This is one of Santa Cruz's most peaceful and tranquil settings, the 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) of sand that compose El Garrapatero Beach is a tropical paradise. It is about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northeast of Puerto Ayora. Surrounded by beautiful mangrove trees, the beach is home to an incredible array of birds, most notably, flamingos and mockingbirds. You can also find marine iguanas, shrimp, Galapagos penguins, oyster catchers, and patillos amongst the white sands and clear blue water. There's also a freshwater lake nearby that is home to even more tropical animals, such as herons, grebes, and many of shore birds.
Day 2: Santa Cruz - Floreana
Breakfast at the Lodge. This morning the adventure starts with a trip to "Los Gemelos" (The Twins), two enormous collapsed lava chambers, a wonderful introduction to the majestic power of the forces of nature and the great biodiversity of the Santa Cruz Highlands. This short, easy hike to each of the twins is swarming with endemic flora and fauna, including a remnant of Scalesia Forest, draped in liverwort, lichens and mosses, where is easy to spot some Darwin finches and perhaps the short eared owls. After "Los Gemelos", a short bus ride will take us to a 600-acre private reserve where the giant Galapagos tortoises freely roam, graze, and sleep. Sometimes it's a bit muddy here, so before setting out, we will provide a selection of field boots (Wellington boots) to choose from, including large sizes for men. Walking among the tortoises in wild, will be one of the most treasured moments of your trip. After visiting these prehistoric creatures on their natural habitat, we'll take a 5-minute ride to the entrance of a 450-meter (1350 feet) illuminated lava tunnel. With a ceiling nearly 20 feet high in most places, this is an incredible opportunity see lava stalagmites, stalactites, sulfur, mineral-colored walls, and the rippled floor formed from lava along this unique lava formations. Return to the Lodge. Lunch will be served at the Aventura Lodge. After lunch, departure to Floreana. Our navigation will take about 2 hours depending on sea conditions. Arrival at Floreana Island.
Upon arrival, and before check in, visit La Loberia, a very beautiful location to swim, snorkel, or simply relax watching a colony of sea lions and great scenery. Walk back to the lodge.
Check in at Floreana Lodge. Dinner at Local Family House, briefing and overnight at the Lodge.
Day 3: Floreana - Isabela
Breakfast at a local family's house. This is a great way to share the insights of Galapagos with a local family.
After breakfast, departure in an open-air bus (chiva) to the highlands of Floreana. During the bus ride, of about 40 minutes, your Naturalist Guide will be pointing out the wildlife and filling you in with the colorful history of Floreana's first inhabitants, like Patrick Watkins, the Wittmers, the Baroness, and the Ritters, re-telling the legend of the "Floreana Mystery", which involves the mysterious deaths of several inhabitants, mystery that has never been solved. At 450m high, we reach "Asilo de la Paz" (Peace Asylum), just behind Cerro las Pajas (Straw Hill) in the agricultural area of the island. The main attractions are of an historic type: one is the cave of pirates and the other is the freshwater spring. The two sites are located at the base of the hill, where is still possible to find the endemic Scalesia (Scalesia pedunculata), as well as a good number of Galapagos Petrel nests (Pterodroma phaeopygia), once at a border of extinction due to the predation of cats and rats, introduced to the island when Ecuador took possession of the archipelago in 1832.
At present, and thanks to the GNP efforts and a special conservation project, the success of Galapagos petrel (local name: pata pegada) hatchlings reaches 98%.
The cave of the pirates has its history since it was the home of the first settlers of the island, while the spring found in Asilo de la Paz provides water to the entire population of Floreana (130 people approx).
Also, near Asilo de la Paz, the National Park Service built a special enclosure where you can see some Galapagos tortoises (from various islands) held in captivity for educational and scientific purposes.
Back to town in time for our trip to Isabela, at around 11.00 am. Our navigation will take about 2 hours depending on sea conditions.
Arrival at Isabela Island between 12:30 to 1:00 pm. We will check into the Red Mangrove Isabela Lodge and have a hot, wholesome lunch.
After lunch, departure to "Las Tintoreras" and Bay Tour.
At the main dock, we will board a smaller craft to head out across the port, slowing down to view blue-footed boobies and Galapagos penguins sharing the same rocky sunbathing space, before turning a bend and docking.
From there, we take an intriguing walk through a jagged lava field, passing abundant colonies of marine iguanas and sea lions, to see a small canal of shallow waters, full of resting white-tipped reef sharks.
The views from here are something you will take with you for the rest of your life! The black, treacherous lava field, the emerald green sea, the green mangroves, and the cloud-capped volcanoes of Isla Isabela create an afternoon backdrop you are not likely to ever forget.
Once you finish the walk, you can snorkel in this warm, shallow bay surrounded by mangroves, for an opportunity to see white-tipped reef sharks, sea lions, sea turtles, and, of course, the mystery of the mangrove below the surface. Don't worry, white-tipped reef sharks are not aggressive, but merely fascinating.
Once we return to the lodge, we'll have a bit of time to relax and shower before briefing and dinner. Overnight at Isabela Lodge.
Day 4 of 5 day itinerary: Isabela - skipped on 5-day itinerary
Breakfast at the lodge. Departure for Sierra Negra Volcano. Vehicles of local providers will drive us up through the humid highlands of Isabela, to the slopes of Volcan Sierra Negra, considered the oldest of the volcanoes on Isabela. Then we hike to arrive at the caldera (crater) of Sierra Negra, from where the views are breathtaking!. With 4 miles across (10km), it is the second largest caldera in the world (The largest is Ngorontgoro in Tanzania).
On 22 October 2005 an eruption, that lasted one week, occurred in the northeast side of the caldera of Sierra Negra volcano. The lava flow covered much of the interior of the caldera and in some places rose more than two meters.
After bordering the caldera some 5 kms on and easy trail, will relax a bit and have a snack at a nice resting site under a jaboncillo tree.
For the hardiest of the group, there is the option to continue on an especially difficult one-hour walk to Volcan Chico, just northwest of the caldera where fumarole activity is abundant, and again, the views are spectacular. This is not an easy hike, however, because it is mostly across sloping lava fields.
After returning from Sierra Negra, we will have lunch at Campo Duro.
Campo Duro is a beautiful organic farm whose owners prepare their food with vegetables and fruits grown locally at the farm. Prepared at a lava rock-grill, enjoy a delicious meal and after lunch take a walk among the fruit trails or just take a nap in one of their hammocks and breath the clean air above a big Mango tree. In liaison with the Galapagos National Park, this property also takes care of giants tortoises under a special patronage program that your guides will carefully explain to you. Back to the lodge, you will have time to discover Isabela on your own. Enjoy snorkeling, swimming or simply relax or walk the town to discover the typical Galapagos style of life. Briefing and dinner at the Lodge.
Day (4) 5: Isabela - Santa Cruz
Breakfast at the lodge. Departure to the "Humedales" (Wetlands) Tour. We begin with a drive out of town along the beautiful white sand palm lined beach of Vilamill, one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Galapagos. This beach, straight from the cover of a travel magazine, stretches on for 3 kilometers before the National Park boundaries, where we will walk up the trail to the summit of Cerro Orchilla, for an astounding view from the top. Then, we will visit the "Muro de las Lagrimas" (Wall of Tears), a unique construction built by the backbreaking labor of prisoners of a penal colony centuries earlier. On the path to the Wall of Tears you will see many lava lizards, endemic an native flora, Darwin finches and perhaps, if you are lucky, some young Galapagos tortoises, released after been born at the breeding center Arnaldo Tupiza in Isabela, as part of the rearing program of giant tortoises held by the National Park. Lunch at Isabela Lodge and depart to Santa Cruz.
1:00 pm. Depart to Santa Cruz. Our navigation will take about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on sea conditions. Arrival and check in at Santa Cruz Aventura Lodge.
Then, enjoy a guided tour to the fascinating Charles Darwin Research Station where you can learn about one of the most successful reptile breeding programs in the world and perhaps, meet the most famous giant tortoise: Lonesome George, also known as the world's rarest creature. Discovered in 1971 on Pinta Island, he is the very last of his kind.
Founded in 1964 the Charles Darwin Research Station is supported by over 100 scientists and researchers from around the world, with the unique purpose to study, support and instrument the conservation efforts of the islands.
Dinner and overnight at Aventura Lodge.
Day (5) 6 : Santa Cruz - Quito or Guayaquil

Why a land based tour?
175 years ago, Charles Darwin had no choice but to tour the Galapagos by boat. Today you do! Before Red Mangrove Galapagos & Ecuador Lodges, the only way to see multiple islands in the Galapagos without a cruise was approaching impossible to organize from afar and certainly questionable in terms of what to expect once you departed Santa Cruz, the main island in the Galapagos. That, too, has evolved in the Galapagos.
Since we have multiple lodges on multiple islands, we are able to offer you the epitome of land-based programs with more activities and more flexibility than cruises. When weighing all the factors, we think you'll agree that land-based is the preferable alternative to cruises.
Besides crowded conditions, lack of privacy and, of course, seasickness, there are still a myriad of reasons land-based programs offer more flexibility:
- You can dive AND go on island excursions. With a cruise, you can either dive or go ashore, but not both. Cruises have a fixed itinerary and you must comply.
- Not everyone can handle wet landings (or even a dinghy) in order to go ashore.
- Ease parental anxiety by eliminating the worry of child overboard.
- Shopping in town is not limited to a single, dedicated excursion.
- Ability to get to know local people and businesses as well as absorb some of the individual islands' culture.
- We will never assign you to a group called 'boobies' on excursions.
- We promise you won't bump your head in the shower through no fault of your own.
- Meals can be much more enjoyable without rolls and bumps. You never have to share a table with strangers unless you want to.
- We will do your laundry on the same day with zero pollution in the sea.
- Internet is not only available, but free.
- Privacy is not confined to a tight space and peace and quiet is a given.
We believe this land-based programs has a greatly reduced ecological footprint (relative to a cruise) and better support the local communities for the following reasons:
- Less fuel used in short trips compared to constant idling and motoring of cruise ships.
- Smaller tour groups, therefore less impact than the hundreds cruises may host.
- Larger boats cannot even send groups to, for example, Isla Isabela.
- No pollution possibilities such as disposal of grey water at sea or garbage being thrown into the sea.
- Money spent by visitors ALWAYS benefits local communities. Red Mangrove Galapagos & Ecuador Lodges are part of the solution of sustainability for locals on 3 different islands in the Galapagos through employment and advancement through education, training and sponsorships.
Passport and Visa Requirements:
Passport valid for at least six months required by all nationals referred to in the chart.Passport NotePassports must be carried at all times. Not required by all nationals referred to in the chart ab. more
The Galapagos
Islands have a subtropical climate regulated by the cold Humboldt
Current and the warm El Niño Current. December through May is the
warmest time of the year, with highs in the upper 80ºs F (31ºC ).
Although the islands receive slightly more rainfall during this time,
the lower elevations of the islands where you will spend most of your
entire trip typically offer blue skies and sunshine with occasional
haze. The sea is at its warmest and is usually calmer at this time of
the year.
The drier Garua season lasts from June to November. The Garua mist forms
in the highlands of the Islands. Ironically, the Garua season provides
more moisture at the upper elevations of the islands than the so-called
wet season. There is plenty of sunshine during the day, but it is less
intense with cloudier skies. Air temperature is lower, with highs in the
upper 70's or mid-80's F (25º-30ºC). The strong Antarctic Humboldt
Current, coming from the south, affects the climate at this time of
year. The water temperature, therefore, is at its coolest, about 68ºF
(20ºC). During some years the infrequent El Niño Current may cause a
much greater flow of warm waters, making the surface warmer and rainfall
increase.
SUN PROTECTION IN THE GALAPAGOS
Galapagos National Park rules require that all visits to the islands
happen during daylight hours. Visitors to the Galapagos will have
multiple land visits each day as well as panga rides and swimming and
snorkeling opportunities. The island's flora provides little shade and
visitors will find themselves exposed to the sun for many hours each
day.
The FDA has provided a guideline to sun care protection known as SPF
levels. The higher the SPF level the more sun protection is offered. In
the Galapagos it is important not only to use a product with a minimum
SPF 15 level but also to apply the product properly. You should apply
sun block to dry skin before exposing your skin to the sun. Apply a
liberal amount of lotion and make sure to cover all areas including your
nose, ears, back of hands, and feet. Putting on less sun block or
missing areas lessens the protection you will receive. Remember it is
important to reapply sun block after swimming, showering or extensive
perspiration. There is nothing worse than missing part of your trip due
to a bad sunburn or sun poisoning.
