Laugavegur Trail
West
Iceland
- Landmannalaugar – Þórsmörk and Fimmvörðuháls, new Volcanoes Magni and Móði
The Laugavegur trail is Iceland's most famous trail and is known all over the world, because there are few trails that offer more diversity and beauty.
There is a maintained track for most of the route and your guide will make sure you don´t miss the best spots along the way. We start in Landmannalaugar, a geothermal wonderland, and make our way south through the highlands. On the way we see fields of obsidian, red and yellow rhyolite mountains, black sands and sparkling white glaciers. The Laugavegur trail ends in Þórsmörk, a green valley nesting under the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull, here we spend a day resting and enjoying this beautiful valley. On our last day before returning to Reykjavík we hike up to Iceland's newest mountain which is only one year old and still warm since the eruption. On this trip you experience a sample of all that Iceland has to offer.

Rates do not include:
9-day option: Meals Day 1 and dinner on Day 8
Sample Itinerary for the 9 Day Option:
Day 1: Pick up at Keflavík airport and transferred to your Hotel in Reykjavik. (Sightseeing can be offered as extra, example: Whale watching, Reykjavik city tour).
Day 2: You will be picked up at your accommodation or meet us in the Reykjavík bus terminal BSÍ. There we board the scheduled bus that takes us to Landmannalaugar. The drive takes about 3-4 hours, on the way we drive along the south coast and then turn inland and pass Icelands most active volcano, Hekla. Our hike starts in Landmannalaugar as we walk through this geothermal wonderland and look at the colorful mountains and steaming hot springs. We walk by the beautiful hot spring Stórihver before crossing into the obsidian desert by Hrafntinnusker. We spend the night in the hut in Hrafntinnusker, one of the most remote huts in Iceland.
Distance: 12km (7.5 mi) Walking time: 4-5 hrs Ascent: 470 m (1540 ')
Day 3: After breakfast in the hut we head out again and walk along the Reykjafjöll mountains and then descend into the Jökultungur area. The geothermal activity has turned these gullies yellow and red. From the top of Jökultungur there is a great view over the Fjallabak area and lake Álftavatn which is our next overnight stop. Before reaching Álftavatn we cross an unbridged stream on foot. We spend the night in the hut by the lake.
Distance: 12km (7.5 mi) Walking time: 4-5 hrs Descent: 490 m (1610 ')
Day 4: We start the day with another refreshing stream crossing as we make our way past the green volcano Stórasúla and into the black desert of Mælifellssandur. On our way we will see Hattafell, a volcano with a strange flat top. We walk through this black glacial desert and into Emstrur where there is chance to enjoy the view of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Just before reaching the hut in Botnar we turn of the path to look at Markarfljótsgljúfur, almost 200m deep canyons carved out by the glacial river Markarfljót. The hut in Botnar is in a little green oasis, a welcome sight after walking through the black sands.
Distance: 15km (9.5 mi) Walking time: 6-7 hrs Descent: 40 m (130 ')
Day 5: We put Emstrur behind us and continue along the canyons on our way to Þórmörk. The trail takes us within a few kilometers from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier. As we descend towards Almenningar a few trees can be seen, a sign we are getting closer to the coast. We walk under the characteristic mountain Einhyrningur and into the dense birch forest in Þórsmörk. Þórsmörk is a green valley nesting under the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, a magnificent place to spend the night.
Distance: 15km (9.5 mi) Walking time: 6-7 hrs Descent: 300 m (985 ')
Day 6: There is a lot to see and do in Þórsmörk. We spend the day exploring this unique place, walking on one of many paths that go around the valley. We can for example visit the Song cave or go for hike up Valahnjúkur, an excellent view point. Those who wish can simply relax and enjoy nature in this beautiful place. We spend the night in Þórsmörk.
Distance: 0-10 km (0-6 mi) Walking time: 0-6 hrs
Day 7: Today we leave Þórsmörk early in the morning and head for the mountain pass between the two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. We will walk up to the two new volcanos formed in 2010, Magni and Móði, the sons of Thor. On the way we pass by a ”waterfall” of lava formed in the eruption. Here you have a chance to see how Iceland is still being constructed. We spend the night in a guesthouse under Eyjafjallajökull.
Distance: 16km (10 mi) Walking time: 7-8 hrs Ascent: 800 m (2600 ')
Day 8:
You will be picked up at your hotel for a sightseeing tour on the famous Golden circle. The day starts by visiting Þingvellir national park, a UNESCO world heritage site. From there you continue to Geysir geothermal area where you will see hot springs spouting water high into the air. Before returning to Reykjavík we stop at Gullfoss waterfall and Kerið, an extinct volcanic crater. In the evening you have a chance to visit one of the many pubs Reykjavík has to offer.
Day 9: We enjoy a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon on the way to Keflavík Airport for the return flight.

Climate and Weather

The summer temperatures in Reykjavík range from 41°F (5°C) at night to as high as 77°F (25°C) during the day. The average January temperature is 31°F (-0.5°C). The south is the wettest part of the country, but snow is rare. Coastal areas tend to experience winter gales and are generally windy. During the summer months there is almost continuous daylight; early spring and late autumn feature long twilights. From mid-November until the end of January, in the darkness of winter, the opposite is true, with the country only experiencing a few hours of daylight each day. The Northern Lights are often visible in autumn and early winter.
