The estate offers a variety of exhilarating sporting opportunities. You can explore the estate on bicycles or on foot and play a round of golf on the prestigious 18 hole course. But of course one of the main attractions is the equestrian program. Mount Juliet has always been synonymous with horses. Close to Mount Juliet House, the Mount Juliet Equestrian Centre, stables horses and ponies which are available for basic and advanced tuition, horse riding, show jumping, trail riding through the grounds and cross-country jumping on the estate's own challenging course. With the freedom of 1,500 secluded acres to enjoy, Mount Juliet provides an exhilarating equestrian experience which visitors never forget. Lazy summer days are a great excuse to take a gentle trail ride through the woods with the mature beech and oak providing a green canopy of shade. For an adventurous day out, the cross-country course offers riders twenty challenging fences including the ‘Picnic Table’ and the ‘Punchestown Bank’.
Also within the boundaries of the estate is Ballylinch Stud, where the McCalmont family, bred many world famous racing horses including The Tetrarch, once known as "the fastest horse in the history of the turf". The breeding tradition continues today. A visit to Ballylinch Stud farm,
an integral part of estate life, will help to understand and perhaps
share the age-old Irish love of horses.
Mount Juliet Equestrian center
The equestrian center is one of the most impressive equestrian centers in the country. With two arenas including one International size arena, an American style barn, an exhilarating cross-country course, 18 miles of bridleways, a new set of show-jumps and a new stock of ponies and horses, Mount Juliet offers the rider the best possible experience in all types of riding.
Facilities
American Barn The American style enclosed equestrian barn (11.5 metres x 38.6 metres) has stunning hardwood walls, concrete floors and a rustic appearance and blends in well with the surrounding environment. The barn is comprised of 18 loose boxes and 4 pony boxes.
Arenas
The smaller equestrian arena at 26 x 43 metres and the larger International size arena at 30 x 60 metres both use advanced riding surfaces for improved performance. The equestrian team at Mount Juliet used the highest grade cushion track premier surface, similar to that used in the international warm up arena at the Royal Dublin Horse Show & Kill Equestrian Centre which are both international competition arenas. All these ingredients create a quality footing wholly sympathetic with the horse maximising the experience for both horse and rider.
Show-jumps
The show-jumps aim to cater for all levels from novice to advanced horse and rider from schooling fences to competition courses. Training sessions can be made more interesting for rider and horse with bright new colorful jumps and courses.
Trekking and Trail-Riding
The estate offers sixteen miles of professionally planned bridleways. Here you can take the stunning views from the ideal vantage point of a saddle whilst passing through mature, unspoilt parkland. Each season has something different to offer from the blankets of bluebells in the Spring to the green canopy provided by mature beech and oak in the summer. With the freedom of 1500 secluded acres to enjoy, Mount Juliet provides an exhilarating equestrian experience which visitors never forget.
Cross Country Riding
The estate is also home to a fantastic cross-country schooling facility with a total of twenty challenging fences. These well designed fences include the picnic table, the Punchestown bank and the coffin.
This course offers an excellent opportunity for experienced riders to hone their technique over well maintained rustic jumps. It also offers the chance for preparation prior to hunting season. With use of well schooled horses from the yard, riders are guaranteed an exhilarating experience over the course.
Equestrian Masterclasses
Throughout the year Mount Juliet will host an exciting range of equestrian masterclasses. These masterclasses have been designed to cover many different aspects of horse-riding from show-jumping to hunting. For example Confidence Building in Jumping is a three day course that will be run regularly through-out the year which aims to develop the riders jumping position. Riders will gain confidence as they school the basics with the use of trotting poles and work a course of fences and progress out onto our cross-country course schooling facility.

Sample Itineraries
‘CONFIDENCE BUILDING IN JUMPING’
Riding day 1: Morning: Assessment lesson. Afternoon: Ground-poles, getting eye in over single fences.
Riding day 2: Morning: Lesson with grid work. Afternoon: Progressing on from the morning session, introducing a number of fences. Option of visiting the cross-country course.
Riding day 3: Morning: Jump course of fences. Afternoon: Trail Ride

History
This part of Ireland has very strong Norman associations, particularly with the great Butler family, who have played a large part in the history of Mount Juliet.
The estate as we know it today was originally two separate estates, Walton's Grove and Ballylinch, each with its own separate history.
Walton's grove
The Waltons were an ancient Norman family who owned Oldtown, the townland of Mount Juliet. They changed the name Oldtown to Walton's Grove. They were here for centuries, until Cromwell dispossessed William Walton in 1653. An unknown Cromwellian owned Walton's Grove for a short period, but after the Restoration it became the property of James, Duke of York, later James II. James sold it to a Mr Sweet, who in turn sold it to Mr Kendal in 1719. He changed the name to Kendal's Grove.
One stormy winter's night, "Old Mr Kendal" as he was known, was robbed by highwaymen and an important portfolio was taken. He begged the Rev Thomas Bushe to retrieve it for him. Rev Bushe duly caught the robbers and returned the portfolio. Old Mr Kendal was so overcome with gratitude that he left all his property, including Kendal's Grove, to Rev Bushe. Unfortunately, Rev Bushe was wildly extravagant and had to sell all his property to settle his debts. He sold Kendal's Grove to his neighbour, the Earl of Carrick, in 1757 The Earl of Carrick built Mount Juliet on this land.
Ballylinch
This part of the estate is now a thriving stud farm and an integral part of the day to day life on the estate. Originally called Bally Inch, which is a translation of the Gaelic "Baile Inse", meaning the peninsulated townland. The townlands and castles of Legan and Ballylinch belonged to Jerpoint Abbey until the Suppression of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1541. They were then granted to Thomas, Earl of Ormande (the Black Earl). He in turn granted them to Oliver Grace, a descendant of the Norman adventurer Raymond Fitzwilliam le Gros.
Oliver's son Gerald built Ballylinch Castle and moved here from Legan Castle in 1563. However, the Graces were dispossessed by Cromwell, who granted Ballylinch to one of his followers, Colonel Daniel Redman, in 1654. His daughter Eleanor married James Butler, 3rd Viscount Ikerrin moved their residence to Ballylinch from Lismalin in Tipperary.
In 1757 the Rev Thomas Bushe sold what had formerly been Walton's Grove to his neighbour, Somerset Hamilton Butler, 8th Viscount Ikerrin, 1st earl of Carrick, thus amalgamating the two estates.
The Earl of Carrick built his mansion on the opposite bank of the River Nore and called it Mount Juliet in compliment to his wife, Lady Juliana, always known as Juliet. The family moved their residence from Ballylinch Castle, which was mostly torn down. The Earls of Carrick remained in Mount Juliet from the 1750s until 1914, when they sold the estate to the McCalmont family who lived there until recently.
