La Sierra Classic Cavalcade
Sierra Occidental
Mexico
This 'Classic Cavalcade' is one of the best rides Hidden Trails has to offer. Everything is first class, the accommodations, the horses, the trails, the scenery and last but certainly not least your fantastic hosts, Lucia and Pepe Schravesande. Both are enthusiastic riders and love to share their beautiful country with you. They will share their knowledge about the history, the culture and the magnificent Monarch Butterflies that come here over the winter months by the billions.
The ride takes place in Valle de Bravo, a town located two and a half hours west of Mexico City, on the Sierra Madre Occidental. The area is unlike any other region in Mexico. When you first drive into the valley you have the feeling you are somewhere in Switzerland. The town is 6,000 feet above sea level and during the trek you ride up to over 10,000 feet where fir trees grow and the Monarch Butterflies come to look for shelter from November to March of each year. The different altitudes create an amazing variety of microclimates where riders can find thriving examples of cold and warm climate species.
Beautiful forests, meadows, valleys, rivers, streams and agricultural land can be seen during your riding week. Birdwatchers will enjoy the unique birds from Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains that can be seen during the daily rides. Riders also pass by some small villages, giving riders the opportunity to see how local peasants live in the area. Never ending views of mountain ranges with impressive rock formations are part of every day's ride. The always-blue sky makes a perfect frame for the panoramic vistas during the day and in the afternoons the spectacular sunsets invite to have a margarita and listen to the typical Mexican music of the mariachi whilst resting from the day's ride.

After registering and getting set in one of the magnificent bedrooms in Finca Enyhe, you will get to know your mount and try your tack inside the arena. A delicious lunch will be served in the swimming pool terrace before getting mounted for a two hour ride to Monte Alto where you will be able to get to know the horse you will be riding with during the week. Come back to Finca Enyhe and enjoy the sunset with a margarita made with an old family recipe. Dinner will be served at 7:30 accompanied with delicious Chilean red or white wines.

Day 2: Delicious Mexican breakfast will be served early in the morning. Afterwards, riders will mount their horses for a three hour ride across valleys and forests laden with orchids, until lunch time when we stop for a picnic on the trail. After lunch riders can enjoy a short Siesta to refresh for another hour of riding. The afternoon ride takes you to an elevation of 9,000 feet, granting you stunning views of the valley below and the village of Los Saucos. Here the horses will overnight and riders will be taken by car to Finca Enyhe. The afternoon is free to relax in the swimming pool or take a walk to town. During dinner, guests will taste the excellent Mexican and International cuisine cooked at Finca Enyhe and enjoy the high quality Spanish Red or White Wines that accompany it. After dinner, listen to a talk about Monarch Butterflies and prepare yourself for a wonderful experience in the Butterfly Sanctuary.

Day 3: After breakfast, transfer by car to Los Saucos. Ride for approximately one hour and at certain times of the year, hike up to the Monarch Sanctuary to view seemingly millions of butterflies! Spend some time admiring these mysterious and wonderful butterflies in the Fir Tree Forest. Then, hike back to your horses and continue the ride until lunch time. Today, lunch will be cooked over a camping stove along the trail. After lunch continue riding for two hours through evergreen meadows and valleys, along rivers containing trout farms and beautiful ferns, until you reach Ranch la Compania, one of the oldest rances of the area. Guest can walk around its beautiful patios and gardens. Transfer back to Finca Enyhe by car where a refreshing margarita will be waiting for you in the swimming pool!

Continue riding until you are on the top of La Sierra de Juan Luis from which you can admire the fantastic views that lay three thousand feet below. Here you will feel a surprising change in the temperature, as you ride next to the ridge, the hot wind from the Tierra Caliente warms this part of the mountain. Bromelias and orchids decorating magnificent oak trees line the train. Lunch is a picnic on the trail, this time set next to El Penon, a huge rock formation that stands out among the mountainous region. After lunch, continue riding to another unique rock formation, El Coloso, from here riders are able to see where they have been and where they are going the following day, as well as the incredible site of Los Tres Reyes. Ride through El Manzano, a small agricutural valley and finish today's ride in Cerro Gordo. The car will take you back to Finca for a four course dinner based on a delicious mix of Mexican and International recipes.

You will be riding thousands of feet above Zacazonapan a town located in the Tierra Caliente. Experience breathtaking views from the edge of the mountain chain. Todays lunch is served in another magnifient spot called El Divisadero, one of the best views into the canyon. It is an incredible opportunity to really see what a horse and rider can do in a week of riding, as you can retrace your journey from this lookout! The breathtaking decent takes us to Atezcapan where the horses will stay overnight. Transfer from Rancho Calderones to the lake shore, where a local boat take you across the lake to the main dock in Valle de Bravo. After crossing over the dam, continue riding for a couple of hours in what is know as Tierra Caliente. This land is what Mexico is known for, vast open valleys. The old Mexican style of working, using oxen and horses instead of tractors and machinery, is still used here today. As the hot sun reaches its peak, we reach the relief of the forest shade. Pause for lunch under the canopy of the forest, and relax in the breeze as lunch is prepared. After lunch, continue riding for three more hours in a old growth forest, where Spanish Moss hang from the trees. If the river is not too high, experience the excitment of crossing the big river! Arrive to San Gabriel Ixtla, a small village where the horses will overnight. Riders will come back by car to the Finca following a different road.

Watch how the Butcher works and how the traditional Barbacoa or Carnitas are being cooked. These are traditional meals prepared only by men. The fields of flowers aroud the village provide a stunning array of colors and fragrance. After leaving this interesting town, visit thebiggest Ranch in the area. Passport and Visa Requirements:
Passport valid for at least six months after date of entry required by all nationals referred to in the chart .Passport Note(a) Applicants for Blue Tourist Cards should have a valid passport, return/o. more
Because of its topographic profile, located in the middle of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains, Valle de Bravo has a variety of microclimates. Starting from 10,000 Ft. above sea level, where the mountain forest are composed of fir trees, the forest composition changes as you decend. Part way down, pines and oak trees mix, and continue by the time you reach a 5,000 Ft. altitude, the vegetation has become a caducifolia jungle, typical of the Mexican dry lands. This variety makes for interesting, and ever-changing scenery.
The weather in the town of Valle de Bravo is nearly perfect year round. Early in the morning the air is crisp, and sometimes a bit chilly, but the temperature rises with the sun, expect day time temperatures in the 80's(F). During the day, a cool breeze keeps the hot sun in check. Short, afternoon rains in the wet season are common, but from November to May this is rare. Nights are cool to cold, with lows around 60F.
An incredible diversity of plant life is the most striking feature of Valle de Bravo. Lots of fruit trees grow in this area; avocado, orange, lime, lemon, mandarin, plum, apple, pear, peach, berries, Mexican guava, cherimoya, guanabana, jicama, mamey, zapote and chayote are among the common foods grown here. Together, with the most exhilarating and colorful variety of flowers, they shade the paths and trails we ride.
A helmet is not mandatory on the trail rides but it is always a good idea to use one.
A good hat or big cap can keep the shade on your face and protect it from the sun.
Sunscreen may be needed also to protect lips, face, neck, arms, and hands.
Short riding boots and half chaps can be lighter that long English or Western boots.
Wide boots that can get caught in the stirrup are very dangerous!
The boots should be comfortable for walking, especially during the visit to the butterflies.
Riders can bring inside the saddlebags a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneackers.
An extra pair of boots can be handy if for any reason you may have problems with the first ones.
English riding pants, jodhpurs, or Western riding jeans, whatever you usually wear.
A light jacket, easy to tie to the saddle in case some cold wind blows during the day.
Another thick jacket or a sweater to be used early in the mornings or late at night.
Long sleeves in your shirt or blouse can help against the sun and the spines.
A bandana or big handkerchief is very useful as towel, cleaner, and against the dust.
A pocket knife is always practical to have hanging from your belt.

Located five blocks away from the main square it has the benefits of both the town and the countryside. The house has a central "patio" with water fountain that invites to reflection and meditation. Four verandas with columns and arches surround the "patio" where multicolored hammocks are always waiting for the guests to lay down and enjoy this paradisiacal atmosphere.

A big and enchanting garden surrounds the house; it is very well kept and has a great variety of flowers, plants and trees. In one of the corners of the garden the swimming pool drops its water to a line of paradise bird flowers whilst on the other side a magnificent wisteria hangs on a pergola giving shade to a one piece log table with benches where delicious lunches are served.
