Catalonia Explorer Ride
Catalonia
Spain
Explore ¨el Corazon de Catalonia¨ - the heart of unknown Catalonia.
On the Catalonia Explorer Ride, beautiful Andalusian and Spanish-bred horses will adeptly guide you deep into the heart of enchanting Catalonia. The riding is as varied as the landscape: from open planes and meadows to deep river valleys and thick forests. Many opportunities to enjoy canters and gallops when you are not following the steep inclines on the winding forest trails. Catalonia is legendary in its ability to preserve its medieval villages in their original and charming forms. Those we encounter on this trek include Besalu, Crespia, Tortella and St. Ferriol with their Romanesque monastaries, fortified walls and stone cobbled roads, banishing vehicles in favour of horses. Here, vehicles have been banished in favor of our four-legged friends for transport, making a horseback tour the perfect way to discover this special area. Catalonia cuisine and wines from the Ampurdan region are sampled and savoured throughout the trail with a diverse range of dishes and tapas and picnics making this a gourmet experience. The Catalonia Explorer also takes you for an afternoon and night to Girona (by car), northern Catalonia’s biggest city and capital of the region, itself steeped in rich history, culture and delicious gastronomy. Along the way we traverse the immense mountains and descend to the valley of Santa Pau. At times there are chances for swimming or siestas near the large river pools in the midst of encompassing wilderness. The climax of this
week is a two-day trail which ventures alongside the river Fluvia
(important river in Catalonia) through the beautiful scenery of the
Garrotxa into the High Ampurdan region where we enjoy varied flora and
fauna and explore some very interesting villages.
With such a varied range of cuisine, landscape and adventures, a rider on the Catalonia Explorer is never hungry nor bored; come discover for yourself!
"To discover Catalonia for the first time is a great experience - to discover Catalonia on horseback is unforgettable”

DAY 1
ARRIVAL
In the evening upon your arrival in the country cottage of Can Muní in Pins.
Situated deep in the heart of the countryside, well hidden from any passers-by the tiny 15th century hamlet of Pins had for many years been forgotten about by the outside world, rather like the spellbound castle in an ancient fairy tale.
DAY 2
The destination today is the small medieval neighbourhood of Gaüses, with the church of St. Mary's Romanesque renovated in the seventeenth century. In crossing it we can see houses with Gothic and Renaissance windows and arched doorways with carved shields. Followed by Terraprim forests where you can see views of the region of Girona to the mountains Gavarres.
After a delicious picnic lunch, we will have a pleasant ride along the our property and back to Can Muní.
DAY 3
After a journey through small villages come to the plain and discovered Greco Roman city of Emporion and the medieval village of Sant Marti d'Empuries both on the beach. The long curve of the bay of Roses stretches before us, kilometers of golden sand. Here we enjoyed some excellent gallop and gallop on the beach. We stop occasionally to take the horse to water, love it!
After walking the beach we headed back inside following the route of the ancient Greeks and through the plains of the Empordà back in the woods Can Muní.
DAY 4
Today we are going to the route of the bandit. The bandit the Menut of Pins was the foreman of the estate of Joan's great-grandmother and was also the captain of a band of the nineteenth century who attacked the king's tax collectors. The band was arrested in the house of Mas Vinardell when they had just killed the tax collector of Flaçà and were executed in Girona. The route runs through Mas Vinardell around and through the woods in which the band hid after their robberies.
We also cross the medieval village of Saus and Sant Mori and where you can walk along the hamlet and around the castle.
Then we arrive at Can Muní for a late Spanish lunch, a delicious paella.
After lunch we will drive you to visit Girona. The capital of the region, this little city has wonderful shady streets, beautiful architecture, the widest cathedral in Europe and great shopping. Or you can take it easy and relax by the pool.
DAY 5
During the morning we ride through the valley of Pins and we pass the quiet towns of Vilopriu and Colomers. We are leaving the hills for now. When we get to the river Ter, one of Catalonia's biggest rivers, we continue along the north bank soon stopping for a delicious picnic.
We follow the path of towrope until the medieval town of Torroella de Montgrí.
The layout of the old section of town reflects Roman design, with four streets.
converging to a hub in the Plaça de la Vila. Two of these streets, Carrer Major and Carrer de l'Església, are of particular historical value, with several buildings dating back to the seventeenth century.
In the afternoon we will make a route that will allow the open plain long gallop to reach areas of the hills and forests of Can Muní.
DAY 6
We now descend to the river Ter traces of the old Roman road and cross to enter the barony of Foixà. This town is full of houses scattered all has a core where the imposing castle Foxià.
Follow the trail for mountain where we saw some amazing views of the plains of Baix Empordà, the Costa Brava and the Medes Islands in the background.
And following the ridge to return to Can Muní.
DAY 7
Our destination is Vilahur in Alt Empordà, a charming village that preserves the medieval wall, and we will cross the East gate to enter the Major square.
We rode in silence through the woods and streams and stop for lunch next to an old historical laundry that will allow us to repose our horse.
We return along the ridges to reach to Camallera while we enjoying the last route through the slight hills of Empordà in the heart of the Costa Brava.

HORSES AND TACK
The horses used are well schooled pure or crossbred Andalusians. They have all been carefully chosen and most are between 14.2hh (150cm) and 16hh (165cm) and are of a medium build. They are sure-footed, fit, forward going, responsive to ride and well adapted to the requirements of the sometimes rough terrain.
The horses are all trained using natural horsemanship techniques which helps to create an enthusiastic, good natured horse that is keen to collaborate with its rider, and really enjoys its work.
The tack is English and trekking style and most horses are ridden in snaffles. We use English saddles and trekking saddles. Saddle bags are provided to carry items required during the day and for picnic lunches.
A great deal of time has been spent selecting and training the horses for these trekking routes. Not too boisterous to be difficult for lower level riders, yet with enough spark to make an enjoyable ride to experienced riders. The majority of the horses used are Andalusian and Andalusian crosses, interspersed with other various beautiful Spanish breeds.
The horses live outside all the year round in a herd to helps to create a psychologically balanced animal well adapted to the necessities of trail riding and group riding. The herd of horses naturally adapts well to the rhythm of a trail ride, traveling up to 30km a day from place to place as a wild herd would do when looking for food and water.
Daily return to the center at the trail's end. Varied scenery, ride to rural villages, swim in the river pools, mini trail taster, tapas. Local culture, trip to Girona, the old city.

THE RIDING AND PREPARATION
As with all rides, to participate in these trips you must be a reasonably competent rider (English style). You should be well balanced, comfortable and secure in the saddle and able to control a well-schooled horse outside at all paces. Riders are expected to be able to cope with a variety of different going and different types of terrain. All the rides are aimed at reasonably capable riders, who are also fairly fit and riding regularly.
Participants are expected to ride regularly in the months before they go to ensure they can cope with the hours in the saddle. There are also places on the rides where you will need to dismount and lead your horse - if the ground gets rough or steep, and for a short time to warm the horses up and cool them down each day. Riders are expected to groom and tack up their own horse each day in preparation for rides.
Your guide will go over the week's program when you first arrive (usually at dinner on the first night), explaining the special characteristics of the Andalusian trail horse and of the tack used, then discussing each rider's ability, experience and their preference as to the kind of horse they would like to ride.
Natural Horsemanship course are available throughout the year !

SPECIFICALLY
FROM OUR PARTNER IN CATALONIA:
We
recommend wearing jodhpurs, as these protect your legs from soreness of jean
seams, and you will find a light-weight, cotton pair the most comfortable
during the summer months. You may want to bring two pairs.
Your
riding boots should have a sole with a safe tread and be comfortable for
walking, as you are certain to lead your horse on some occasions. Paddock
boots and half-chaps are the most flexible combination for comfort and leg
protection than tall riding boots.
A
long-sleeved shirt is recommended for protection against the sun and against
scratches when riding through undergrowth. A light cotton scarf can help to
avoid breathing in too much dust in dry areas. Bring sunglasses, also to
protect your eyes from dust.
We
strongly recommend bringing a water-bottle which can be refilled en-route;
these can be carried in the saddle-bags provided.
Rain
gear suitable for riding should be carried along, particularly during the
months from November through April. It is essential that you bring good wet
weather gear. Although it rains very little, when it does it is normally
a heavy downpour, consequently a jacket or cape and waterproof trousers are a
good idea.
Good
sun protection - gloves, sunscreen, and hat with a chin strap, sunglasses with
straps!
A
swimsuit, towel, shorts, and a windbreaker should also be taken.
A belt
pack in which to carry your camera and other small valuables during the ride is
handy.
Attire
on the ride daytime and evening, is strictly informal throughout, though if you
are planning to visit other cities on your own later you may wish to bring
dressier evening clothing.
Regular
film can be obtained locally, but special sizes may not be available - bring
plenty. And make sure you have plentiful batteries.
It is
a good idea to bring your own soap, since not all the hotels supply it. There
will be NO opportunity to have laundry done while on the ride.
It is best to pack in soft sided
luggage rather than suitcase styles. It is much more efficient for the
staff to handle and transport!

The Costa Brava is one of few places in the Mediterranean where the land meets the sea in a more dramatic fashion, as chunky peaks cloaked in dense forest are punctuated by coves of soft sand lapped by azure blue water.
Accommodation is in a 440 acres horse farm in Costa Brava, situated
deep in the heart of the countryside. Hidden from any passers-by, the
17th-century hamlet had many years been forgotten
about by the outside world. It is the ideal place for a horse riding holiday and a perfect base for walking or touring the area - 2 km from the picturesque villages of Vilopriu and nearby the historic towns of Girona, Besalu and Olot. The beach resort of La Escala can be reached by car in about 10 minutes.
The traditional stone farmhouse of typical design has just been restored to a very high standard, incorporating all the modern conveniences.
We can offer our own horses, from pure Spanish to mixture arabian. You can choose from a gentle hack to take in the beautiful countryside, galloping in
the vast open fields or cross-country. The farm also offer lessons to those
who may not be so confident.
CATALAN CUISINE: Catalonia produces an extraordinary variety of foodstuffs: wild
mushrooms and game from the Pyrenees, the trinity of olives, grapes and
wheat from the hilly heartland, all manner of fruits, vegetables and
nuts from the irrigated lowlands, rice and fish from the river deltas
and a great variety of fish and shellfish from Catalonia's 500 km of
coastline.
This trip includes
and can accommodate special dietary requests.
