Peruvian Paso Horse Contest: Chiclayo, Lambayeque Posted: 12/15/2010 5:00:00 AM

This past weekend over 5,000 people attended a Peruvian Paso Horse contest in Chiclayo, Peru. The event was held in an effort to promote tourist attractions and local customs.

One hundred horses were shown at the 48th Official regional Contest of the Peruvian Stepping Hose, organized by the Association of Owners and Breeders of Peruvian Paso Horses.

The event gathered many representatives from the champion breed, along with horsemen showcasing their best skills in an event that was close to the heart of Peruvian national identity and pride.

Other events occurred alongside the Peruvian Paso Horse Contest, such as a food festival and a national competition of Marinera Nortena, a typical Peruvian dance.
All the festivals happened simultaneously in a bid to boost Lambayeque as a tourist destination of northern Peru.

Would You Rather? Posted: 12/9/2010 5:00:00 AM

Holiday season is upon us; stores are open well into the night, people are cramming into small spaces to get the best deals on the best presents and trees around the world are decorated with aplomb. But outside? It’s nasty. With over a week of rain just passed and ten more days on the way, one has to wonder – do I really want to stay home this year?

Would you rather spend the holidays at home, snuggled inside around a fire while the elements beautify (snow) or dull (rain) the nature outside or head to a hot and dry destination for unseasonable temperatures and suntans and trade in your sleigh for a surfboard?

Ecuador Volcano Tungurahua Posted: 12/7/2010 5:00:00 AM

Tungurahua Volcano, located at about four hours from Quito, made headlines last week when volcanic activity forced authorities to declare the red warning status.  The volcano, now back to orange alert, is still releasing surges of lava up to 800 meters from the crater's base.  Nevertheless Baños, a popular adventure travel town at the midst of Tungurahua, has resumed its regular life after more activity from the volcano they've coexisted since first eruptions started more than ten years ago.  In the case of a full-out eruption, tours in the Galapagos Islands will not be affected and will continue to run in the usual fashion.

Holy Snow! It's Thanksgiving. Posted: 11/26/2010 5:00:00 AM

Happy Thanksgiving to all of Hidden Trails’ American friends – we hope you had a great day with family eating yummy food and reflecting on what you're thankful for. Here's hoping all that delicious turkey will help keep up your strength for the madness of shopping today.

Up here in Vancouver people were not feeling so thankful, due to a strange weather pattern for the southwest coast of BC: snow! Snow that followed a week of temperatures below freezing – unheard of in the Lower Mainland. Usually we have very mild winters (read: lots of rain) but this year La Nina is letting us know that our time in the sun (so to speak) is over. With people so unprepared for the snow, it made a messy day for commuters and towing companies with scenes like this happening all over the place:

It seems La Nina has left us for now, bringing back our regular dose of warm(ish) temperatures and steady winter rain – but she’ll be coming back soon with more for us. For now, much of Vancouver is thankful to be back to normal; what are you thankful for?

Horse Helps Woman Go To School Posted: 11/19/2010 5:00:00 AM

A Michigan woman made international headlines when she brought her mini horse to university. The mini horse, Cali, is her guide and companion: a seeing eye mini horse! The graduate student purchased and paid for Cali’s training, so that she can navigate through life easier. A seeing eye horse can be great alternative for people who can’t have a dog for reasons like allergies or religious practices.

The company that trained her horse, The Guide Horse Foundation (www.guidehorse.com), has had so much interest that they’ve had to close the application process for the time being.
However, other people argue that this is a form of animal cruelty. What do you think?
