June and September are adult oriented and can take single rider / single room bookings with no extra charge.
July and August are suitable for families with children and no single riders can be booked.
|
Rates do not include:
Private in-suite or alfresco dining, Laundry service, Spa facilities and treatments & Off-ranch excursions.
Come, explore British Columbia's remote and rugged heartland on horseback. Here, you'll roam the range as the cowboys do, at one with your trusty mount and the land.
Our program includes an orientation to begin with, followed by unlimited half day (1.5 to 2 hours), privately guided rides, available twice daily.
Equine Experience Program
The Equine Experience program features riding to your heart’s desire, for first-time beginners through to intermediate, advanced, and expert riders. Unlike many ranches that only allow walking rides, here, everyone is welcome to progress from walking to an easy jog, to extended trotting, and for those whom are capable, loping (cantering) their horses.
Those who would like the freedom to ride on their own without a guide or other guests may do so with proven ability during a 7-night stay, and this option is included free of charge.
Our Natural Western Horsemanship program delivers a powerful, personal horse riding experience in a safe, supportive environment. We coach in a kind, supportive and non-intimidating manner, recognizing that many of our guests, even the most confident, are often well out of their comfort zones.
With our dedicated program, you will be spending much quality time together with the horses we choose especially for your equine experience. We believe that the best bonding comes from participating in daily care and preparations.
The process we go through to help our guests connect with their horses is incredibly special, very empowering and completely opposite to many other ranches and resorts.
After learning the basics of communication and moving safely around a horse on the ground, you'll be taught to groom, clean the feet, and saddle up your mount.
We teach in small groups at the barn, in the round pen, in our rodeo size riding arena, and during impromptu lessons while out on the trail. Guests who are really keen on taking their skills to the next level may request a private lesson if they wish.
If you are a novice, our goal will be to turn you in to a competent, horse-loving rider with a basic understanding and appreciation for the principles of natural western horsemanship.
Advanced riders are welcome to ride at their preferred pace, and our program offers more challenge and freedom for them than the average guest ranch.
Groups are kept to a maximum of 6 riders to ensure safety and pleasure for each trip. The route and duration of the ride is tailored to the wishes of the guests, and you won't find any nose-to-tail action here! Riders are welcome to break at any time and spread out on a sunny knoll and enjoy the scent of clover that wafts through the air.
The River Ride (extra cost)
A full day, privately guided ride to the river and back, for a picnic and swimming while your horse waits nearby, is available at an extra cost. The duration and pace of ride is geared for personal preference and ability. Your destination will be the Bonaparte River.
Ride the foothills of the Cariboo Mountains through golden grasslands and striking snag forests to a verdant oasis where our wilderness River Outpost beckons. There, you can enjoy swimming, inner tube floats, fly fishing and picnicking on the range, while your lovely mare or gelding awaits nearby. The ride down to the river from the ranch lasts from 1.5 to 3 hours, based on guest preference and same for the way back, following a different path.
On route you'll ride through the after effects of the wildfire that swept through in summer of 2017 and learn all about this rare and unique ecosystem. The trail weaves in and out of wildfire affected areas and islands of lush green refuge — plenty of pristine forest and meadows that escaped the flames. You will also see secluded wilderness lakes that attract various waterfowl and wildlife, and expansive grasslands providing wide open range for your riding pleasure.
This is the best way to enjoy a wilderness adventure vacation—on horseback! Besides the exhilaration and thrill of riding, exploring this wilderness paradise by horse has great advantages. Guests can access habitat in a quiet, non-invasive way—very ecofriendly of course, but also essential for the best wildlife viewing.
Cougar, coyote, bear, moose, deer, and beaver are just some of the species native to the area, while a myriad of birds call the nearby snag forests and wetlands home.
Your guide will show you fresh sign and scat, and if you're lucky you'll see a wild animal in its natural habitat. When weather conditions are right, throughout the second half of June, and the first part of July, we'll see black bears and their cubs, and deer with their fawns, almost on a daily basis.
This activity is also available as a full-day non-riding excursion.
Sample Itinerary - subject to changes
The following is only a sample week. This is a suggested itinerary with lots of room for suggestions and changes, according to each individual desire. Horseback riding is considered the main event and riders come for the amazing horses. If riding is not your thing - or you'd like a break - try some fly fishing, especially good during June and September. Length of stays on the ranch can range from 3 nights to two weeks.
Note: 8-day stays usually start on a Monday or Friday. 5-day stays start on a Monday. 4-day stays start on a Friday.
Day 1: Arrival
Check in anytime between 3pm - 6pm and settle in to your accommodations. Take a walk around the ranch and meet the horses. Go for a swim in the lake. Hors d’oeuvres are served at 5:30pm in the great room followed by a three course dinner in the fine dining room. Enjoy an orientation talk with the owners, your hosts, to plan out the next few days. Campfire that night with star gazing before bed.
Day 2: Introduction to Horse Program
Starting at 10am, all guests interested in horseback riding will be given a full private orientation, where our natural western horsemanship program is introduced by a professional guide. Here, you will learn skills for ground work, horse care, how to saddle up, riding and route finding. Lunch at the lodge.
The afternoon will be spent in the round, training pen and in our rodeo-size outdoor riding arena, where you'll practice western riding skills and get to know your horse better in preparation for the rest of your equine experience!
And when you return to the barn at day's end, you'll un-tack your mount and give your mare or gelding a well-deserved brush down and a handful of horse treats.
Day 3: Full Day Fishing Safari or more riding
Wake up tray to your room at 8am, breakfast at 9am and then at 10am it's off in the ranch's 4x4 with your guide for a full day fishing safari (more information here). Picnic lunch. For beginner through advanced with fly casting from shore, spin casting, trolling from a boat with wet flies, pontoon boats, or float tubes - the choice is yours. Back to the ranch at 4pm. Game of bocce ball or badminton in the meadow before appetizers and dinner. Sunset hike or bike after dinner.
Day 4: Horse Trails
Each day you can go on up to 2 half-day rides. We never repeat trails except for main routes on to the range from the ranch.
Once you return from your day's adventure, you can take a snooze in the hammock before hors d’ouevres are served on the deck at 5:30pm. Dinner al fresco in the meadow by request followed by canoeing on the lake until dusk (it doesn’t get dark at Siwash in the summer months until 9:30-10:00pm at night).

Horses
We have a herd of 30 or so horses. Our string of horses is very diverse, with forward moving mounts suitable for experienced riders, as well as those more suited for beginner and intermediate riders.
Our horses love to buck and play when they are together in the wild. But when they come in to the corrals each morning to partner with our special guests, their professional training takes effect. Settling to a familiar routine at the barn and on the trails, they really do enjoy their work!
Guests consistently tell us they have never seen such happy, healthy and well-mannered horses. To us, they are family members.
We own all of our horses and none of them are rented. Our horses live at the ranch year round, and most have been with us since they were very young. A few were born here.
We favour the western Quarter horse breed for its sturdiness, agility and suitability for the Cariboo's wild and varied riding terrain. Most of ours are pure bred Quarter horses, but we also have some Arabs, Paints, Draft Crosses and Appaloosas.
Content with their way of life at the ranch, our horses are calm and eager to please—for we keep them naturally, allowing the herd to graze freely together in expansive pastures every evening.
To us, they are precious and we treat them with the utmost love and respect. When they get too old to carry guests around, we reward their years of dedicated service by allowing them to retire and roam free in our pastures for the remainder of their lives. Quite a few of our herd have lived well into their 30's!
Riding Style
While we embrace all riding styles, during your stay at the ranch you'll be riding classic Western style. And we'll teach you everything you need to know. Our program coaches guests to be assertive and work on intuitive skills for building confidence and establishing trust with their mounts. Even if you usually ride using the English discipline, it's no problem at all to switch over to our Western style riding. People who ride English generally have great balance and a well established seat; standing them in good stead when riding Western.
There are a lot of similarities between the different riding styles... We'll even rise for the trot in Western (saves the horse's back and your butt!), but it's not quite as accentuated as posting, English style.
The main differences between English and Western riding are in how you hold and guide the horse with the reins, how you use your legs (relaxed unless you're asking for a change in movement), and the saddle itself, which is more roomy and designed for comfort during long days riding the range.
We use a gentle but firm approach in Natural Western Horsemanship style and our horses are trained for self carriage. They go well on a loose rein, with a natural, long and low frame. We'll be coaching and crafting your riding for a light touch, striving for a soft feel on your horse's mouth.
Children
Children who demonstrate an ability to safely control their own horse are welcome to participate in the Equine Experience with their parents. Otherwise, a young child may be led around the barn area and home meadow when a horse and staff are available.
Children ages 7 and older who demonstrate an ability to safely control their own horse are welcome to ride the trails with their parents. If a child is under 12 years of age, participation in an unescorted group will be at the discretion of the owners, based on the child's riding ability and maturity. Those children needing more practice can be led around the barn area and home meadow when the opportunity arises. Otherwise, parents may enjoy riding time while their kids are happily playing back at the ranch, under the close supervision of the children counselor.
“Book the whole Ranch”
For a special group of friends, a family gathering, or an executive retreat, have the run of the ranch for your own exclusive use. The ranch is perfect for a very private and beautiful family reunion. And for business purposes, the uniqueness of our setting coupled with full amenities makes for a most productive corporate meeting or workshop. You'll each have your own horse, and an attentive staff to serve your every need. We will cater especially to meet the specific requirements of your group. The ranch house can accommodate 2 or 3 families, or 6 executives along with their spouses, or 5-7 persons traveling as singles. This all-inclusive package features riding on your own, horsemanship instruction, special guided rides, ranch events, entertainment, plus many other outdoor activities, all your meals, non-alcohol beverages, and childcare.
* Minimum 2 guests required for private guide or supplements will apply. Unescorted riding is available after a few discovery rides with a guide to determine riding ability and route finding—guests with adequate skills will be given this privilege, to be determined by the general manager and head riding guide.

Seasons
The Ranch is situated at 3,500 feet above sea level on the Cariboo plateau. As a result we can get snow in April, and frosts in early September. But we also have +25° Celsius (75° Fahrenheit) in May and October. Spring and Fall can sometimes be muddy. Please be prepared for all types of weather!
Spring (May & June)
New grass begins to show in the meadows around mid-May when the cattle are turned out to graze. The leaves on the aspens are just beginning to unfurl and the lake is teeming with a variety of migrating ducks.
At the start of June, we plant in the ranch vegetable garden. This is an especially good time to spot a wide variety of wildlife.
Summer (July & August)
Wildflowers everywhere! All is lush and green. August is generally the driest and warmest month. Enjoy long, hot summer days scented with clover.
Fall (September & October)
Fall in the Cariboo is glorious and makes for fantastic riding conditions. The aspen leaves are in a blaze of color around the third week.
Enjoy clear, frosty mornings and warm, golden afternoons. Often a good time to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
Winter (November to May)
Crisp, dry days with clear clue skies, bright sunshine and 1-3 ft. of fresh snow. Average temperatures are -5° to -15° Celsius, (+10° to +25° Fahrenheit) but can drop to -20° to -40° Celsius (0° to -40° Fahrenheit).
A long-sleeved shirt and jeans are good for riding in, and some people like to wear tights underneath to decrease the chance of chafing. “Wrangler” brand jeans are best.
For hiking, lightweight, waterproof hiking shoes or boots and walking shorts are suggests.
Bike or riding helmets are strongly recommended for children who will be riding.
Lastly, please throw in your slippers to keep your feet cozy in the ranch house, as we leave our boots at the door.
The general store at 70 Mile House is a 40-minute drive away – if you will be fly fishing please pick up your license there while on the way to the ranch. All fishing gear is available at the ranch.

Accommodations
This is a stationary ride, so all nights will be spent at the same location.
Description
This retreat is ideal for adventurous people looking for something completely different—a sophisticated boutique environment with an authentic, intimate ambiance—truly your home away from home.
This boutique resort was built in the backcountry, overlooking shimmering Siwash Lake. Our nearest neighbour, a working cattle ranch, is over a half-hour drive away on gravel roads. This spectacular
hideaway is a lush, verdant oasis teeming with the essence of life; harmonizing with the stark black forest beyond in a magical symphony of Nature.
The Ranch House is centrally located on the ranch portion of the property, and is the main hub of the resort. It is a quintessential Canadian backcountry lodge — hand-hewn with logs from the nearby forest.
The ground level is common space for all resort guests, and includes a formal dining area for 'family-style' meals. The great room with river rock fireplace, and an expansive, multi-level deck for lounging and 'separate table' outdoor dining are also located on this main level of the Ranch House.
We host only 12-16 people at a time to ensure an ultra-private and exclusive guest experience.
Room Options
You can choose between 3 different accommodation type: Glamping at Star Camp, Siwash Suite & Cariboo Barn Loft Suite.
At all accommodations, amenities include writing desks, heavenly beds dressed with eiderdown duvets, the best Egyptian linens, hair dryers, natural aromatherapy toiletries, robes, purified drinking water, plush oversize towels, DVD players with movie library, and wireless Internet service (out of respect for other guests, use is confined to the library and to guest rooms). French doors open to a spacious deck, where you can share your day's adventures over drinks and appetizers while wild birds serenade from the nearby pines. Or you can retreat to one of several verandahs, to steep quietly in the gentle ebb and flow of the great outdoors.
Star Camp
The Star Camp is located on the Ridge portion of the property. From the Ranch House you will enjoy a 10-minute walk across the home meadow, over the lake via a solar-lit boardwalk, and up the trail through a rare and unique, post-wildfire snag forest that is carpeted with bright pink Fireweed flowers. We have been watching the land on the Ridge regenerate and flourish with awe, following the 2017 forest fire. Nature's enduring powers and beauty are incredible! Our Star Camp made its debut in mid-summer of 2019!
We have 2 luxury tents offering world-class sky viewing experiences. Sleep in a pioneer-style canvas wall tent under some of the world's clearest skies, complete with your very own wood-fired cedar-soaker hot tub.
17' x 14' white canvas wall tent on raised platform, fully furnished, with glass-fronted wood-burning stove and special sky watching dome over the bed
Panoramic views over Siwash Lake and the Marble mountains
Star-gazing platform with SkyMaster Pro binoculars and luxe Siwash Star Beds
Campfire
1 king bed with pullout love seat (adjacent tent with twin beds available for children)
Private and charming 3-piece bathroom facility located on site
Wood-fired, cedar soaker-style hot tub
Siwash Suite
The Siwash Suite is comprised of two separate rooms with an internal connecting doorway. It is on the east side of the upper level of the ranch house. Each room is uniquely different and decorated in the fashion of country charm. With a panoramic view of the lake and home meadow, this beautiful suite has a private balcony with double French doors, 2 king size beds (one of these can convert to two single beds), a sitting area with glass-fronted wood-burning stove and a pullout double-size sofa bed. The en-suites for these guest accommodations are one-of-a-kind with custom vanities; one has an old fashioned claw foot bathtub.
This is the perfect set up for a family of four or five!
800 square feet
2 king beds; or 1 king & 2 singles; + sofa bed
2 en-suite bathrooms

Cariboo Barn Loft Suite
The Barn is set on the ranch portion of the property, only a one minute walk to the Ranch House, which is the hub of the resort for dining and lounging. The private and authentic Suite is located in the renovated loft of our hand-hewn log barn. It can host up to five guests and is thoughtfully woven into the Ranch’s landscape.
With a Canadian frontier heritage, this family-size accommodation is unique and richly appointed. It has a separate bedroom offering gorgeous views over the home meadow and lake, which you can enjoy while ensconced in the king-size bed. The living room has an L-sectional sofa that folds out to a double size bed, and an alcove accommodates two more single-size beds.
The Suite also comes with a four-piece bathroom, and a balcony out back that overlooks the horse corrals!

Eco Rating
The ranch has been awarded Five Green Keys by the Hotel Association of Canada. The ranch employs cutting edge technologies, policies, and programs which set the international standard for sustainable hotel operations.
The ranch is located completely off the grid and uses solar power. Every other aspect of the ranch has been designed or is currently undergoing a retro-fit to be eco-friendly as well. The ranch’s environmental guidelines and procedures policy ensures the overall footprint of the operation is minimal. Owners and staff practice sound land stewardship principles and in turn, pass on their knowledge and motivate guests to do the same.
Promoting harmony with nature is paramount. The ranch has a commitment to conservation and has completed a project in concert with Ducks Unlimited to enhance the delicate wetlands surrounding the local lake. Many endangered and threatened species, including amphibians, reptiles, insects, plants, birds and animals make their home in the wilds surrounding the location and the ranch acts as den mother to all these creatures, guarding their precious habitat from excessive and invasive logging, mining, and non-nature-based, backcountry recreation.
Note: Out of respect for the ranch animals and neighboring wildlife, unfortunately we cannot accommodate your pets. For the health and comfort of our guests, the ranch house is a non-smoking environment.
Meals
Our Canadian farm-fresh cuisine can best be described as a modern mosaic of global flavours—a sensational fusion of international dishes plated with ranch-style flare.
Your experience with food and wine will go well beyond what you would expect when dining 'off-grid' in the wilderness. Our food is sophisticated, yet simple and nourishing. Using the best ingredients, we prepare all meals fresh from scratch in the Ranch House kitchen. Imagine home-baked bread served with rose petal jelly, or a salad that is garnished with house-made pickles and candied spruce tips.
We are famous for exquisite pasture-to-plate cuisine with a daily set menu in keeping with what's fresh and seasonal; first and foremost from what is farmed on our ranch or available locally.
Whenever possible, we incorporate home grown food—mouth-watering beef and pork, eggs laid that morning, and baby greens for your salads—the former from our happy, free-ranging animals, and the latter picked right from our garden. We enrich your dining experience with edible flowers, herbs and berries foraged from the wilds. Foraging has become a daily routine for our chef and his helpers.
Eating food grown on site or foraged from nearby meadows and the post-wildfire Snag forest is at the heart of all of our meals. Respect for the sustainable production, harvest, and preparation of these ingredients is always at the forefront of Chef's mind.
We are also proud to share with you delicious honey harvested from our own bee hives.
Our ranch chef makes wonderful roasted vegetable salads, often featuring ranch broccolini that out-flavours anything you could buy at the grocery store. Charcuterie using our grass-fed meats is a house specialty. You'll love our home-made cheeses and pasta made from scratch.
Smoked trout (that we both catch and smoke on site), river caught salmon and wild venison from the post-fire Snag forests nearby, are resort specialties.
Here, you have the luxury of time on your side. Whether it be a private alfresco dinner overlooking the lake, or a robust multi-family experience in the Ranch House dining room, our sophisticated dining experience promises sumptuous flavours & leisurely repasts. Relax and rediscover the lost art of dinner conversation amid Nature, with fine linens, candle light and bottomless glasses of award-winning British Columbia wine.
Most often, we serve meals alfresco in the great outdoors with each party of guests having a private, separate table. On the very odd occasion when the weather is inclement, cuisine and camaraderie unite when we revert to family-style meals in the main Ranch House formal dining room. This provides a wonderfully warm dining ambiance with a large table that seats up to three families together.
Food and beverage service begins before breakfast each morning, when a wake-up tray placed by your suite door, brimming with home baked muffins and your choice of freshly brewed tea or coffee.
Breakfast is served between 9-10am daily with guests' choice of the daily cooked breakfast, or self-serve lighter fare—or any combination of it all, so that guests may personalize their breakfast experiences.
Lunches feature nourishing homemade soups, pastas, pizzas, and main dish salads, with breads still warm from the oven. Gourmet picnics can be tucked into saddle bags and enjoyed on the banks of a meandering river.
Dinners are leisurely three-course, culinary adventures. During the summer, we sometimes do a casual cookout on the outdoor grill overlooking Siwash Lake, where chef will barbecue specially marinated ranch beef or pork.
The campfire is always burning and the highlight for children is the nightly marshmallow roast!
Special Diets
We are pleased to satisfy special dietary needs, including gluten or lactose-free, and will prepare vegan and vegetarian dishes when notified in advance. Meals can be simplified for young children.
