Danube Delta Wilderness Adventure
Romania
Explore the wilderness of the Danube Delta with the help of a small motorboat.
The Danube Delta is the second delta in Europe and it is above all the one that remains the wildest. This has earned it its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Delta is a real maze of canals and lakes and it is a European paradise for fauna and flora.
Two figures are quite evocative: the delta hosts 12,000 species of plants and 250 species of migratory birds. But, more than the figures, it is the feeling of being in a timeless world that you will remember, when at the bend of a meandering canal, in willow forests you will see groups of pelicans or egrets flying away. In this world, where land and water meet, there are the Lipovans, a Russian minority exiled from Russia, that will help you discover the region at its best.
You end the journey with a boat ride to the mouth of the river so as to discover the fine sand beaches of the Black Sea.

Sample Itinerary - subject to changes
Note: please be informed that at any time we may have to modify the stages of your stay due to events beyond our control. We depend in particular on climatic and natural events in the Danube Delta.
Day 1: Departure from Tulcea and boat service to Crisan
The tour starts in Tulcea (accessible by direct minibus or train with a change - taking around 5 hours, or private transfer from Bucharest), with a 1:00 or 1:30 PM regular boat service to Crisan. Our host will welcome you at the pontoon.
The rest of the day is free to soak up the atmosphere of the delta. Possibility of a short canoe trip, recommended just before sunset.
If you like fish, your dinner will be a treat.
Meals included: Dinner
Overnight at guesthouse in Crisan
Day 2: Southern part of the Sulina Branch
Today, you get on a boat to explore the Southern part of the Sulina Branch (4-6 hours). You will discover the long canals as well as huge lakes that are home to large colonies of birds. You will be surprised by a contrasting landscape made by both large stretches of water and small forested canals you can hardly follow because of the aquatic vegetation. You continue this way until late afternoon when you reach again the village of Crisan.
Upon request, a 1-2 hour walk can be included in the delta tour (please inquire).
Accommodation in a local guesthouse in Crisan.
Meals included: Breakfast, Picnic lunch & Dinner
Overnight at guesthouse in Crisan
Day 3: Letea
Another boat ride will take you to discover another facet of the delta (4-6 hours). You will cross many canals, lakes and ponds, places with many different bird species. Your host will then take you to the small hamlet of Letea.
There, you can visit this "forgotten by God" village with its traditional houses, dust streets and old-fashioned charm. This curious village is bordered by a no less surprising forest reserve where, next to centuries-old oaks, grow all sorts of exotic plants that have sprouted here thanks to the seeds brought by migratory birds. The guide will inform you about this magical land. Today's walk from the dock to Letea Forest and through the forest lasts for up to 3 hours.
Picnic at the water's edge. In the afternoon you return by boat to Crisan from where you will take a boat to Sulina.
Meals included: Breakfast & Picnic lunch
Overnight at guesthouse in Sulina
Day 4: Sulina (non-guided)
Sulina is an old port town where the Danube, after a course of almost 3000 km, flows into the Black Sea. A visit of this cosmopolitan town with its end of the world atmosphere is a treat! Visit of the old lighthouse (km 0 from where the river is measured), the various churches and the international cemetery where you will find tombs standing proof of a mixed population. Walking from town to the beach via the international graveyard takes about 1 hour. Then, one can carry on walking South of the beach along the coast for at least 1 extra hour more. In that case, it will take about 2 hours to return into town from there.
You can also swim in the Black Sea. It is a rather wild beach, sheltered from the crowds.
Meals included: Breakfast
Overnight at guesthouse in Sulina
Day 5: Departure
Transfer by regular boat to Tulcea, to leave this unique aquatic universe. End of services in Tulcea, after the boat ride.

Seasons
This region benefits from a continental climate with a relative low level of annual rainfall. Most of the rainfalls tends to occur between March and May.
The climate is influenced by the coast and high humidity from the different lakes and waterways.
Taxis and hotel vehicles transfer clients’ luggage from one boarding house to the next.
Walking boots and walking socks (with a change of socks in rucksack), rucksack/day pack, warm pullover/jumper, waterproofs, water bottle, insect repellent, sunglasses, sun hat, sun block/cream, compass, torch, mobile phone, container for sandwiches and a first-aid kit.
We also recommend you bring a Tupperware or lunch box for your picnic lunch (in order to reduce plastic use).
In addition, you should bring sun protection. As green as it is, the delta can be very sunny and the air can turn dry at times. Pack sunscreen, a wide brim hat and, for the long boat trips, long sleeve shirts.
In case of allergies (especially pollen or dust), we can provide a personalized tour with less exposure to such elements.
While water is potable, some people can experience mild digestion problems in some cases. In order to prevent this, we recommend bringing a water filter or purifying pills.
