Itinerary for Las Alpujarras Walking Tours



Sample Itinerary: guided option (set departure dates) - subject to changes

Day 1: Airport pick-up
Meet at Malaga airport and leave for Capileira at 2 pm. Go through the week and answer any questions.
Meals included: Dinner
Overnight in Capileira


Day 2: Villages of the Poquiera Gorge
We will walk from the hotel and descend to the river below Capileira and carry on down the river to the lowest of the villages, Pampaniera. Lunch in a bar here before we follow the GR7 up to Bubion before carrying back to Capileira.
Walking: 10 km / approx. 5-6 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight in Capileira


Day 3: Capileira to Trevelez
Walking from the hotel we walk from the Poqueira Gorge over to la Taha and on into the rio Trevelez valley. Taking in the beautiful views of the Sierra Nevada behind us and the Contraviesa in front. We walk through varying landscapes before finally coming to Trevelez.
Walking: 18 km / approx. 6-8 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Siete Lagunas
A high mountain walk using the track that goes to Mulhacen (the highest peak in mainland Spain). A hard but thoroughly rewarding walk, with great views and an amazing sense of wilderness. The Siete Lagunas is the glaciation cirque defined by Loma del Mulhacen and the Alcazaba.
Walking approx. 7-8 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Trevelez

Day 5: Free day or trip to Granada
Free Day Or Trip to Granada and the Alhambra (50 Euro per person min 2 people). A visit to the Alhambra and then to the Moorish baths for pampering, if you wish (30 Euro extra) or just some free time in the historic city of Granada, eating, drinking and shopping.

Overnight in
Trevelez

Day 6: Trevelez to Alquiera de Morayma
A great walk from Trevelez all the way down into the Cadiar Valley, walking through Juviles, Timar and Lobras before finally coming to the beautiful hotel of Alquiera de Morayma.
Walking: 19 km / approx. 6-8 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight at Hotel of Alquiera de Morayma

Day 7: Berchules Circuit
Transfer to Berchules (15mins). A great walk taking in another valley that sweeps down from the Sierra Nevada. Walking to the moors last stand and then on and up, climbing through a cool pine forest. Before coming out for great views of the Las Alpujarras below.
Walking: 15 km / approx. 6-8 hours
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight at Hotel of Alquiera de Morayma

Day 8: Return to Airport
Transfer to Granada or Malaga airport
Meals included: Breakfast

Arrive at hotel in Capileira or we will have transferred you to the hotel from Malaga or Granada.

Day 2: Walk around Capileira
Option 1: La Cabadilla Circuit
Walk from the hotel towards the stunning Sierra Nevada mountain range and the deserted village of la Cebadilla. Abandoned in 1957 after the Hydroelectric plant was finished, a perfect village at the head of the Rio Toril and Rio Poquiera meeting. Walk back along the other side of the gorge to Capileira. Evening Meal in Hotel
Ascent: approx. 200 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 200 m / approx. 3-5 hours (6-7 km)

Or

Option 2: Three Villages Walk
A beautiful walk taking in the three villages of Bubion, Pampaniera, and Capileira in the Poquiera Gorge. Evening Meal in Hotel
Ascent: approx. 600 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 600 m / approx. 5-7 hours (9 km)

Day 3: Capieira to Mecina
Shorter option: A shorter walk but no less beautiful and rewarding. Using the GR7 to take you high above Bubion before the descent through Pitres and down to Mecina.
Ascent: approx. 0 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 0 m / approx. 3-4 hours (8 km)
Meals included: Breakfast
Overnight in
Mecina Fondales

Or

Longer option: Walking out of the Poquiera gorge with some fantastic views of the Sierra Nevada before dropping down into the Taha region.
Ascent: approx. 0 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 0 m / approx. 4-6 hours (14 km)

Overnight in
Mecina Fondales

Day 4: Walk around Mecina Fondales
Option 1: La Taha Valley Walk
Walk along the valley side with great views – walking through the villages of Ferreriola and onto Busquistar. Walk past the fountain of health and the Era de Trance.
Ascent: approx. 100 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 100 m / approx. 3 hours (~8 km)

Overnight in Mecina Fondales


Or

Option 2: Sierra Mecina Circuit
A beautiful walk through the taha region. Walking on ancient mule tracks you will walk through a varied landscape and visit some of the best unspoilt villages in the Alpujarras.
Ascent: approx. 200 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 200 m / approx. 4-6 hours (12 km)

Overnight in Mecina Fondales


Day 5: Free Day
Activity of your choice between a walk to Trevelez (14km) or a Granada Excursion and Alhambra visit (extra cost) or simply a free day in Trevelez. Evening meal in Meson La Fragua

Day 6: Walk around Trevelez
Option 1: Rio Trevelez Walk
Walk down to the Rio Trevelez a river that flows all year from the snow melt and the huge aquifers in the Sierra Nevada. Walk along for 6km and return the same way. Great level walk along an easy path to follow. Evening meal in Meson La Fragua
Ascent: approx. 100 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 100 m / approx. 3-4 hours (~12 km)

Overnight in Trevelez


Or

Option 2: Rio Culo Pero
A leisurely walk gradually gaining height above Trevelez and following the valley up towards the Sierra Nevada. An excellent opportunity to spot Golden eagles soaring above you then descend to the valley and follow the Rio Trevelez back in to the village. Evening meal in Meson La Fragua
Ascent: approx. 200 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 200 m / approx. 4-6 hours (11 km)

Or

Option 3: Siete Lagunas
Gaining 1300 metres in height up to the beautiful arête which holds the siete lagunas (seven lakes). A challenging walk but worth the effort. Evening meal in Meson La Fragua
Ascent: approx. 1300 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 1300 m / approx. 5-8 hours (18 km)

Overnight in Trevelez


Day 7: Trevelez to Hotel Alquiera de Morayma
A great walk walking from the highest village in Spain down to the beautiful hotel at Cadiar. Another varied day of landscapes and villages. This walk can be reduced to 12km with a transfer from the village of Timar to the hotel.
Ascent: approx. 500 m difference of altitude / descent: approx. 800 m / approx. 5-8 hours (18 km)

Overnight at Hotel Alquileira De Morayma

Day 8: Departure day
Check out of hotel. Transfer Onwards

Difficulty Levels Explained
1. Easy
Easy pace and an average-to-sedentary level of fitness. You should be in good health and fit enough for full day of normal sightseeing and walking.
2. Easy to Moderate
An average level of fitness or some experience with the featured activity is recommended.
3. Moderate
Requires you to have performed the featured activity regularly, with some periods on challenging terrain. Activities are mandatory and you may be traveling at high elevations. You need to be in good health and physical condition to enjoy these trips, with adequate muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance.
4. Demanding
You must be extremely physically fit and are expected to hike or ride four to six hours over steep or more rugged terrain.
5. Strenuous
Prolonged hiking/biking on moderate to difficult terrain (five to nine hours a day).
May include high altitude, rugged terrain etc..
