Itinerary for Zambezi Horse, Canoe, and Rhino Safari

Sample Itinerary - 7- & 8-day trip- subject to changes

Day 1
Arrive in Victoria Falls. A representative from you lodge will meet you at Victoria Falls Airport and transfer you to Victoria Falls Safari lodge or your hotel where you will spend your first night. You will be picked up by your horse guide mid-afternoon for your pre trip briefing and introductory ride - this will be your first introduction to this area and a chance to see if you are happy with your horse, your saddle and so on before we leave on our long safari tomorrow. Our partners, and your guide, has owned and ridden horses all her life, and with many years in the safari industry, is expert at allocating horses to riders. After a brief orientation and safety talk you will move off with  your guides.
Night spent at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (8-day itinerary) or a B&B in Victoria Falls (7-day itinerary)

Day 2
You will be collected from your lodge at 5:15am - 7:00 am for your day ride/ picnic lunch will be served en route. We will be exploring game areas on horseback. The final stretch to Gorges Lodge will be by road. Gorges Lodge itself is part of a community based project - but what will interest you is its spectacular location - where you can watch black eagles soaring below you. Gorges Lodge is also the home of the rare taita falcon. Although the largest camp you will stay at, Gorges has a relaxed family feel and the wonderful staff of gorges is dedicated to looking after you. Here you will spend the afternoon relaxing & watching black eagles – landing to feed if you are lucky.
Night spent at Gorges

Day 3
You will depart after an early breakfast to meet the horses. Today we will be riding through rural areas including beautiful and lovely sand tracks and wide grassy areas for cantering, rugged hills with fabulous views, and open vleis bordered by magnificent Feydherbia Albida and dotted with Hyphenae petersiana (vegetable ivory palms). Everyone moves around on foot, or, where possible, by donkey cart. A lovely ride. The pace will be varied, with stops to look at things and talk in the traditional manner, but remember, no game; lots of cattle, superb birds and trees, and a part of the rural areas not seen by the average tourist. This is rural life at its best and very special. Your ride will end at before lunch Ursula’s Homestead where you will spend the next four nights*. The afternoon and evening will be spent on an afternoon game drive or a night drive in this private game reserve exploring areas we may not have reached on horseback. Dinner will be served in Camp.

*
Your stay here will be tailored to your requirements as far as possible. Riding is exciting and varied: canters and gallops through long stretches of teak forest that will take us to the furthest reaches of the estate as we look for and track the rare and endangered Black Rhino. Finding these after following tracks and territorial markings through wild country is truly an experience of a lifetime. Riding safaris are not timed by the clock; instead it depends on what we see, and how long we want to ride for.
Game drives with will give you further opportunities to find Rhino, elephant  and other species such as lion and leopard.

Day 4
Having decided when we want to start the previous day, we will spend the morning on a ride exploring towards the Kalisosa or explore the estate. Exactly where we go and what we explore will depend on our inclination and game movement. After a long morning's ride exploring this magnificent area, we will return to Ursula’s Homestead. After a break having lunch at Ursula’s Homestead and relaxing by the pool watching wildlife at the waterhole, you will be driven into town to explore the magnificent Victoria Falls. Allow at least two hours for the Falls itself. Dinner will be served in Camp.

Day 5
You'll have an early start at 6.40am and be transferred by vehicle for your canoe trip on the Upper Zambezi River. This is a wonderful and exciting way to enjoy the astonishingly beautiful scenery that lines the river before it takes its plunge over the Victoria Falls. This part of the river is dotted with many islands of varying size, inhabited by a variety of birds and small animals. This is the route David Livingstone took on his way in search of the rising clouds of mist. It was in fact along these banks that he remarked "scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight".
Breakfast is enjoyed on the banks of the Zambezi, followed by a safety talk by the professional river guide, before the day's canoeing begins. Lunch is a picnic usually taken on one of the remote islands. The day is spent running rapids, exploring channels, and bird and game viewing. You will return in the early afternoon after this you will return to lovely Ursula to relax for the rest of the day.

Day 6
Today will be another long ride – deciding where we go will depend on what have seen and what we want to do: long gallops will take us further afield to look for more Rhino and explore more remote parts of the estate. Lunch at Ursula’s Homestead. Afternoon can either be spent on another riding safari, or you may choose to go for a later afternoon/evening game drive. Depart Ursula’s Homestead at around 2:30-3:00pm depending on the time of year and return late afternoon.

Day 7
Today is your last ride with us. Our starting time is entirely up to you. Our ride will end around 10:00am. We will collect you from Ursula’s Homestead at 10:30am for your transfer with to Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge where you will spend your last night. Here at Imbabala your time will be spent on game drives and river safaris, even venturing out after dinner to look for lion and hyena from the safety of your Guide's jeep.
Night spent at Imbabala

**On 7-day itinerary: Today is your last ride with us. Our starting time and length of ride is entirely up to you. Our ride will end around 10:00am. After mid-morning brunch you will say goodbye to Ursula’s Homestead and transfer around 11:00am.

Day 8
After your early morning game drive followed by brunch, you will leave Imbabala at 10:30am for your transfer to your outgoing flight or onward.

Note: We may choose to vary the order and type of camps used, starting at Ursula instead of Gorges most especially to take advantage of game movement. Please note that any variation in route or camps will be only to increase the value and quality of the safari and always in the client’s best interest. Cost and content of the safari will remain the same.
On any day and at any camp there are plenty of opportunities for game viewing, and each day’s riding includes a wide variety of magnificent scenery.
