Itinerary for Home Ranch

Welcome to our Ranch!

Your all-inclusive dude ranch vacation at one of the best guest ranches in Colorado puts the wild and scenic Elk River, the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, and the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness, at your doorstep. The Home Ranch makes an ideal home base for all kinds of healthy outdoor activities and adventure travel options. We offer you and your family a wide variety of all-inclusive on-ranch adventures and activities to suit any age, taste or desire. We also help you and your family arrange off-ranch excursions with some of the best adventure travel outfitters in the Steamboat Springs, Colorado area.

Summer family vacations at The Home Ranch are spectacular. The Elk River Valley comes to life and the Ranch offers classic Western vacations with a gourmet twist. The Home Ranch serves exceptional cuisine at every meal. We highly recommend working up a hearty appetite with family adventures into the sublime Rocky Mountain wilderness. Our picture perfect Western setting is the ideal location for immediate wilderness access by horseback or foot and provides your entire family with endless opportunities for outdoor play and activity, combined with authentic Western hospitality.

On-Ranch Activities

Horseback Riding
For over 30 years, The Home Ranch has welcomed families and equestrian travelers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy trail riding along the edge of the western continental divide. Our guests have access to acres and acres of National Forest right out our back door.  We have so many choices of trails and terrains, a week isn’t enough time to see them all. If you already ride, you’ll love the variety of horses and trails. If you’re a novice, you’ll learn to ride from our experienced Team of Wranglers. First-time riders will learn much more than just surface knowledge, it’s unique in comparison to other ranches. Advanced riders tell us they learned something new – wranglers keep up on what’s happening in the horse trainer world. If trail riding isn’t quite your calling, we offer a multitude of lessons, workshops and clinics including working cattle, drill team, and horsemanship workshops. If the children also want something more out of their horse experience, they can join our Junior Wrangler Program. For riders who like clinics with experts in the fields, The Home Ranch offers multiple opportunities.

Working Cattle
Another activity well loved by our returning guests is the Friday morning Cattle Competition.  Some dude ranches offer cattle activities, working cattle at The Home Ranch is different. It’s similar to team penning, but we put our own spin on it.  We like to call it Home Ranch Stockmanship. We teach you to move cattle efficiently via effective communication with your horse.  It’s a form of horsemanship with cattle largely overlooked, and widely misunderstood. Many would think that the faster you can move on horseback, the better. The truth is, the faster you go, the less predictable the cattle become. Just like with horsemanship, it is one of the ‘less is more’ scenarios.  But learning to do it right is as thrilling as any other type of ‘Ranch Rodeo’. For guests that want to learn more about stockmanship, check out our fall Cattle Round-Up week.

Private Lessons
If you prefer private lessons, that can be arranged with some advance notice.  If you want to build your skills in a particular area, please don’t hesitate to ask.  Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor arena or personal time out on the trail, we’re confident that with a private lesson you will be more comfortable in the saddle in no time.

Fly Fishing
The Home Ranch is an Orvis-endorsed fly fishing lodge with about three miles of the Elk River flowing through the property. The Elk River is a classic rocky mountain freestone river that supports abundant populations of wild rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout. There is also a private pond stocked with rainbow trout just a few yards from the main lodge. The best nymph fishing is usually in mid-July as the river begins to warm and descend (some of the largest trout are caught this time of year). The best dry fly fishing is usually in August and September. The fall is a great time of year to hunt for trophy rainbows and browns with large streamer patterns. We can provide rods, but feel free to bring your own!

Swimming
After a long day on the trail, nothing feels better than a dip in our outdoor heated pool. Our swimming pool is a favorite spot for kids to play, but is also a quiet place for adults to read or connect with friends when kids are off on other adventures. Enjoy a quiet afternoon poolside, relax in the sun, read a book, and breathe in the clean mountain air. It’s a great place to rest and make new friends.

Hiking
We offer guided hikes for every level of climber from easy-going acclimation hikes, to the challenge of the 12,000 foot Mount Zirkel, which is less than a 20-minute drive from the ranch. The Zirkel Wilderness has many alpine lakes that make perfect destinations for all-day hikes. So, whether you would like to learn the names of alpine wildflowers or see Steamboat Springs, Colorado from the top of Hahn’s Peak, The Home Ranch will make sure you accomplish your goal, or at least have fun trying!

Yoga
We offer a one hour yoga class each week. This is an all levels class that is designed to ease the muscles and ligaments used in the activities and exercise offered at the ranch. Yoga is offered each Tuesday morning at 7:00am.

Children's Program
Dedicated kid counselors offer a wide menu of daily activities and adventure for kids and teens.  The whole family can relax, unwind, do what they want, when they want.   Our counselors are available to keep your kids occupied and entertained every day of the week, from 8:30am until 9:00pm. A family-friendly vacation at The Home Ranch requires no advance planning, no childcare arrangements, no dinner planning, and no stress. Our Recreation Room is well stocked with arts and crafts materials, foosball, ping pong, and tons of games for indoor and outdoor entertainment. The shallow creek that meanders past the lodge offers hours of entertainment for racing handmade boats of every description. Activities for kids are practically endless and our kids counselors are always available and willing to create games and entertain.

Teen's Program
In addition to riding, hiking, and fishing options available to everyone, teens can head to the hills for an overnight campout, or head out on the trails together. We tailor our program to the ages and interests of each week’s group. Our enthusiastic counselors are flexible enough to adapt to what the kids and teens want to do, assuming it’s safe and fun! Parents are also encouraged to join us for activities such as rock climbing, rafting, and even lessons on barrel racing.
